Okay, here's the deal... A very sweet lady I met at a blues festival somehow is occupying over 1/2 incoming email... I mean, every time she posts on facebook, I get notified... I'd like to not get notified but I don't want to hurt her feelings... Is there another way of blocking them without her knowing... I mean, if she wanted to write something to me that would be fine but getting 20 to 30 notifications a day is a bit much...

B~

If you go into the account settings (there is a drop down arrow beside your account name and "home" in the upper right corner) you open a page for all of that. You can set mail preferences by looking in the upper left side of the account page for NOTIFICATIONS.

On the notifications page scroll down to the "All Notifications" group and click the Facebook line to open the larger menu. I have unchecked most of the items there. I think you'll need to uncheck "sends you a message" or any of the other things she is doing. I she suggesting friends, tagging, etc? Then uncheck those.

The problem with Facebook is that it keeps reviving the emails after a "period of grace." I've changed and saved the settings dozens of times but the emails always come back. I don't notice this for weeks, sometimes months, because I gave FB a link to an account where mostly junk mail that I can't stop is routed to. Then I have to delete hundreds at once.

Hey Bobert, thanks for asking the question. I was reaching the point where I thought I might have to set my dear wife as facebook spam.
SrS thanks for telling me where to look. I've unchecked a few boxes. I'll see if it has any effect.
I'll also put a trace on this thread, so if Facebloke ticks the boxes again when I'm not looking, I can find where to go to change stuff back how I want it.

Quack!
Geoff.

You're welcome. As facebook changes offerings or rearranges things I periodically find myself in that account settings area unchecking more boxes.

Another thing that affects the e-mail frequency is how you class your "friends." If they are classed as close friends, you'll get an e-mail every time they sneeze. Put them as "acquaintances," and the e-mail amount will be reasonable.

I set up a test Facebook account a while ago, but will not use it. (see here here for some of my reasons) One person talked me into "friending" them although I have Facebook blocked on my network so as to simplify things, and avoid the tracking cookies that everyone gets - regardless of whether they're a member or not. Still, this person results in a huge amount of e-mails. However, since I had the foresight to use an e-mail account specifically for this (facebook@mydomain) it doesn't cause me any problems. In fact every few months I check that e-mail account and snicker at the added volume.

How about... Create a yahoo email account. Make that the Facebook contact. Don't open it or check it.

Great idea, but you need to manage your cookies or you will still be participating. Whenever you go to a site which has a Facebook link you will pick up a tracking cookie. People may or may not care about that, but if you do then get a cookie blocker or do what I do and put 0.0.0.0 www.facebook.com in your hosts file. When you see all those "not found" notices on sites when you're browsing, it really becomes obvious just how pushy Facebook is.

Since this subject is now current in my mind I just checked that Facebook e-mail account. With only one friend, there are now over 150 e-mails spanning about 6 months. I really feel for Bobert - this is bordering on spamming or a denial-of-service attack!

With friends like that, who needs spamers? - anon

To me, "facebook" represents social engineering at it's worst. Years ago I reluctantly let my 16 year old granddaughter set me up with an account. Since then, it's been nothing but problems. Several times I have tried, and failed, to close my account ... they don't make this easy.

I have now taken this approach: everytime I get a facebook message, I contact that sender by private e-mail and ask (demand?) that they remove me from their list of so called "friends." This seems to be helping. bob(deckman)nelson

Hmmmm...I just don't have a problem. With judicious unchecking of my preferences I get very little.

I never ever subscribe to any of the 3rd party add-ons, games etc, but otherwise find it invaluable for organising my social life, whether it be local musical events, get-togethers of climbing friends from all corners of the globe, organising expeditions to the Himalayas or Norway, finding out which of my friends have entered the same half-marathons as me so that we can arrange to meet up, etc.

I don't like their silly "Timeline" look and feel but somehow I've so far managed to avoid being forcibly migrated to it.

Some of the FB emails I used to get had an "unsubscribe" address - sometimes this was just a matter of clicking a link, other ones just printed the URL which I then had to copy & paste. I must have done this about twenty or thirty times before the email notifications ceased. (Fingers crossed!)

Even without those, I found that one FB "friend" was making me suffer his postal diarrhea - sometimes posting twenty to thirty photographs per hour (!). Most people set up albums for photographs which is fine, you can look at as many or as few as you choose, but this guy was posting every single one separately. I didn't want to offend by "unfriending" or requesting a change in habit. But there is a way of defining what posts arrive on your screen from particular people.

Bring up your friend's page (Wall/Timeline/whatever they're calling it today) and click on the "Friends" button. A drop-down menu then offers various options - click on the "(tick) Show on News Feed" line to make the tick disappear - et voila, no more posts/notifications. You can still message as before. If you don't want postings to disappear completely, click the "settings" line to fine-tune.

Ross

Deckman, you need to have that granddaughter sit down at your computer to fix your account so all of that email stops. She should know how to follow the instructions I gave above.

A bit of box uncrossing seems to have cracked the problem.
Once again, thanks for telling where to look for them.
