What was your baby's first communication?

When Anna was a baby I used to wink at her and her first response was to wink back. At less than six months she winked at a friend who was visiting and scared the pants off her. She thought the baby was possessed.

Now Granddaughter Kylea is different. Whenever I saw her I would blow a raspberry. So of course that was her first method of communication, blowing a raspberry at Grandpa.

I believe a baby's first form of communication is returning a smile
from an important caregiver.

Peeing just as the diaper comes off, to try to let folks know they would rather just go nekkid.

Ah yes, that all important first smile (which usually accompanies the peeing as well).

Nice memories to cherish before they hit puberty and stop communiticating at all...except to complain that supper's late.

Yes, a scowl and a snarl become pretty much the standard response around that time. ;-)

Bert - too bad that friend who was visiting wasn't Angelina Jolie, eh?

Hawkster,in his earliest infancy, was exposed to the recorded debates and writings of William Buckley and Gore Vidal. He quickly began moving his tiny fingers and blathering along boringly. This later translated into long and elaborate non-sensical posts which seem to either support no sides or all sides or often nothing at all discernible by intelligent people............kinda' like a man with two Dachsunds up his ass.

When the grandson came along, he smiled and wiggled at everyone, except for grandma. The response to grandma was a distictive cough. That's when grandma decided to give up smoking for good. We all had been trying to communicate that message for years. Twenty one years later and she is still a non-smoker.

There really should be a one Dachsund limit. And not just self-imposed on accounta ya know LH would just keep going if it wasn't from a higher diety.

If you're going to pick a thread to complain about my Dachshund comments and my lengthy statements, Spaw, why this one? All I did on this thread was:

1. agree with BillD's remarks about the well known sullenness of teenagers

2. make a joke about Angelina Jolie that I thought Bert could easily relate to, as I know he finds her attractive. Go back to his first post, study it with some care, and you might even get the joke.

I wasn't explaining this thread Hawk, just you. Try to keep up.

The twins had each others' preceptions/thoughts as infants. Sometimes one would squirm till the other farted, for example... How they communicated I don't know, but as "the twins" they were an entity not to be let the eyes off of, not that I'm thinking in English or anything. They were seamless in inTRA communication, long before either tried to communicate anything to us boring grups.

Ketchdana, I liked your account of a way to stop smoking.

Ya know, little kids everywhere could be coached in that technique. Two, three and four-year olds would be naturals at it, I think.

"Now, when Grandma comes close to you, pretend to cough. There will be a cookie for you later if you remember."
=========
I used to know a three-year-old (I still know her, but she's not three any more) who referred to herself as "the little sister." She didn't use "I" or her own name. She defined herself, not as her own person, but by where she fit in the family. I thought it was an interesting insight into how children learn about the world.

The question is, Spaw, would I gain anything by keeping up, as you put it? I think not. There's nothing going on here that's worth keeping up with.

You need two dachshunds to get enough leg for one dog.

Not in their opinion! ;-) They think that other dogs are unnaturally tall. What did you think about my Angelina suggestion?

Regarding babies...I think they're wonderful. They haven't been brainwashed yet.

There are some very interesting websites about teaching pre-verbal babies sign language. Never knew about that when I had little ones!

best,

Barbara
