Hurrah! MCing in the Gasworkers Club again! What joy. The barman called me 'Sir' in there last year (must've been the impressive attire!) and when I said " oh you, look don't say that, my Dad was a Gasworker, I grew up with the smell of coke!" (heh, heh) He replied "oh we call ALL our male visitors Sir, Sir." - I felt quite deflated! Ah, the Echo Falls, the soapy lager, the sweet essence of giraffe and the 6 year old smokers on the step - can't wait!

pip, pip!

Word is we're doing a wee set on the Jacinta on the Monday along with Red Duster, Spitting on a Roast, Scolds Bridle and the Alan Bell Band...

On Friday afternoon we're doing quite possibly the same wee set in the Euston for Camelia, followed later by Camelia's Sing Through Six in The Mount (which is one singaround not be missed). Could be we'll be at Dave's Late Night Cabaret on Friday in The New Boston too.

Saturday morning we're hosting Poems & Pints in The Steamer with 'Sailor' Ron Baxter. Ballads welcome too, but nothing too long - this an equitable division of time, humility & humanity (we hope).

Saturday afternoon in The Mount is the DEMDYKE 400 show - an All New Presentation Commemorating the 400th Anniversary of The Pendle Witch Trials with narration & lyrics by Ron Baxter set to music by Ross Campbell (singing, guitar & concertinas), Terry McCarron (singing), Rachel McCarron (singing, guitar & percussion) and Myself (fiddle, drones & singing). We're hoping for thunder storms, but chances are it'll be all 99's, sandcastles & What the Butler Saw (I do hope I get bronzed this year). On all this we'll be drawing the curtains... A special CD-R will be on sale at a very special price (we hope).

Sunday - we're playing at The Mosely Festival, so an early start for the long drive south.

Here's to a very happy 40th.

Susanne

Join Ron Baxter on Friday on his Heritage Walk.
Climb the Mount.
Walk along the promenade at sunset.
Play crazy golf or build a sand castle.
Swim in the pool - or in the sea.
See the new trams and the Knott End Ferry.
Enjoy fish and chips in Richardsons or the Granada.

Have a good week-end!

Now that you mention it, henryp...

We'll be joining Ron on his Heritage Walk and singing a few Baxter Songs on the way by way of Entertainment & Illustration. The last couple of years we've sang Lost by the trawler memorial on the prom. This is to all the Fleetwood trawlers that were lost with loss of life & Ron's lyric manages to list them all. Ross Campbell set it beautifully in fine old style - if anyone still does Myspace (!) you can hear Ross (12-string & singing), Rachel (singing) & myself (mute low-whistle & singing) singing it on the old Fleetwood Folk Club page:

http://www.myspace.com/music/player?sid=56224187&ac=now

Other songs might include a tale of the canny skipper of the Harriet (be sure to go and see her in the museum) and Ron's action packed ballad The St. Anne of Dunkirk - the first recorded ship loss on the River Wyre from the time of the English Civil War.

Have managed to find a hotel about 6 miles away, so can catch the bus in and taxi back (as we'll be late). Coming up by train too from Kent so that'll be easier than driving and pulling the caravan.

Just wonderin' how it was for you all? Personally I had a fine time and I doubt if I'll go to a better, more enjoyable and meaningful event this year than Anne Green's 'Lunch With The Ladies' - 2 hours on Saturday PM in the New Boston.
At times deeply moving, at others humourous but always accessible, informal-yet-professional. What's not to like about Anna Shannon, Marie Little, Scolds Bridle and Grace Notes? Fantastic bill.
Main stages are fine, but this little gathering could compete with anything you'd see at Cambridge or Cropredy. Discuss!

Well said Clive! (I knew were a 'Ladies' man!).I have heard people say they would have liked longer spots from each of them. Perhaps next time if you have the influence?
Seriously enjoyed the North Euston concerts too. Paul Metsers brought the house down with 'Farewell to the Gold'. Hope you can do the deal with him in Feb at the Bothy. We'll definitely be there!

Yes, it was so good to see Paul again, after what must be, 30 years. Just as affecting as ever and whilst there must've been a good few in his audience/s thinking "who?" he had us all right with him from the word go. Bothy date for next year btw, is 3rd Feb. - we got straight on the case!

Mostly great fun & great music; some lovely singarounds with Ron & Camelia, and some nice Noon Music at the Euston despite PA problems. The Heritage Walk featured a few more songs than usual (any pics & movie Fylde goers? I noticed a few of you had your cameras out!) and everyone was smiling inspite of the drizzle.

The only negative point was Poems & Pints which was ruined by certain parties getting into a tantrum over Poetical Correctness, which was depressing for sure. Why are people so grudgeful when we've gone to the trouble of keeping that session going for three years now? Like other years, the focus was on all aspects of Poetry, spoken and sung; other years this has worked fine, but this year the goodly vibe was violated by a petty vindictiveness which beggars belief.

We packed 'em in for Demdyke 400 though & sold all the Souvenir Edition CD-Rs. Again - all photographic evidence welcome! Email me at: sean@sedayne.co.uk.

Saturday evening we bumped into Brian Peters on the prom, so we went along to see his opening set at the Gasworkers & Shunters Club, even as the Heroic MC fumbled about trying to figure out how to work the lights and the ghostly ectoplasmic fug hung in the stale air undisturbed by anything brighter than a lighter since 1970 at least (somehow, you just know the Shirley Bassey Sink anecdote is set here). But, undaunted, and with the sort of gifted artistry that sorts out Men from Boys, Brian lifted us into wholesome realms of Traditional Song & Ballad (& more besides) in such a way as to quite ignore the horror of the place.

We didn't stay long enough to see The Emily Portman Trio, but we loved her set the following day at The Moseley Festival. Her music is an exquisitely woven filigree tenderness ideally suited for the rainbow colours, smiling painted faces & verdant parkland setting that typifies the Psychedelic Arcadia that was MoFo 2012. I couldn't help but wonder how her particular flower would have faired in the sinister gloom of the Gasworkers & Shunters. Shame we didn't hang round long enough to find out really, but, like Brian, I bet she sent the shadows fleeing away...

Well done, Mr Pownceby - and top marks for the jacket.

So we only got Fri night for our £75 quids worth. :-(

Great festival! Saw some old favourites like Jez Lowe, Brian Peters, Roy Bailey and Martyn Wyndham-Read, and went to a few enjoyable singarounds. Can second Blandiver's comments on the Gasworkers' Club - apart from the last sentence. Who do you think you are, Mister Pownceby? Gary Glitter? :-)))

One thing the organisers ought to work at certainly is the proper lighting of a stage. You could either see the artists lit solely from behind (Gasworkers'), or you could see the backs of their heads and the lights in the mirror behind them, which I found an annoying distraction (North Euston Hotel ballroom).

Still, a most enjoyable weekend!
