While I'm disappointed in many of the things he has done, I recognize that those represented choices between two evils... The bank bailout, BTW, will make the US taxpayers money in the long run because they were loans which are being repaid *with interest*... As for the two year moratorium on deporting younger immigrants (25 years and under) I have no problem with that because the criteria is reasonable... They have to have been in the US for a minimum number of years, be in school, working legally or in the military... There's nothin' unreasonable about this... A lot of these kids don't even speak Spainish and are fully Americanized... I think it would be cruel to send them to what to them is a foreign country...

I'd give Obama a solid "B"... He's held up under the most harsh resistance by an opposition party since Abraham Lincoln and we all know how that turned out...

Yeah, I'd call it a "lesser of two evils" choice to vote for Obama. This is what we usually get to do in Canada too, is unenthusiastically vote for a lesser of 3 or more evils. The political parties, as far as I'm concerned, have long ago sold out to dominating corporate/financial/bankster interests that serve the richest 1 or 2% of the populace, and it is laughable to think that they represent the general public in any honest or responsible fashion. The bank bailout was an outrage that should have been followed by something like the Nuremberg trials...and that goes for America's foreign wars of choice as well.

That said, the Republican Party is so far out of touch with reality that voting for them amounts to an act of madness. I consider Obama a disaster (and a terrible disappointment, because I had great hopes for him back in '08). I would consider Romney worse than a disaster.

Reasonable people know that Obama's first two years were completely tied up with rescuing many parts of the economy from the ill-conceived policies and practices of the Bush administration. Since then it has been an uphill battle to pass legislation with the do-nothing House of Representatives controlled by Republicans. The short-term memory of those complaining the loudest is evident. Critical thinking skills are required to see past the pig-like squeals of the over-fed GOP politicians who want to keep shoveling money at the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class. If you think that's fair, then you deserve what you get if the GOP win in November.

In a system so badly broken, this is probably the least Tweedle Dee/Dum election in many years. This is also the first time in a long time that the Democratic party is getting down and dirty to match the GOP where that is business as usual.

This election cycle makes me want a 6 year Presidential term and although you can serve more than one, they cannot be consecutive. Follow that with limiting the money spent and doing away with the Super Pacs might fix things a bit. Hell, I don't know.

What I do know is that I lived through one President who was secretive and said "Trust Me." He was a lying sack of shit. If Romney won't disclose tax returns, just how transparent is he going to be as President? There are certainly times every President needs to keep secrets but you need to be able to trust the person. Romney is not to be trusted.

The PBS documentary I watched put Prez al-Obama in the drivers seat during the bailout. It all collapsed just before Bush scurried off. Obama was left holding the bag. He should have leaned back in his recliner and told Wall Street that they screwed themselves up and they could just go unscrew themselves. No government help. I'm still planning on voting for Obama. The people who thin he's the "lesser of two evils" ... I can't see how they can mean evil. The problem is that we want perfect candidates. Obama got the "rock star" treatment last time around, by worshipful hordes of people that thought he could do no wrong. They see he isn't perfect, and equate that to him having betrayed them. He also has to work with some REAL anti-Americans in Congress. If justice prevails, some of those folks will be out.

I was born in Southern California in the middle of the Great Depression, and my father was out of work a great deal of the time. There were no jobs to be had until Franklin D. Roosevelt's WPA and CCC were instituted. School tuition, classic guitar lessons, and singing lessons. With money I earned by WORKING.

Due to an attack of polio at the age of two, I've had to walk with crutches and a leg brace all my life. But to pay my way through school and to eat regularly and keep a roof over my head, I have worked at Boeing as an draftsman and production illustrator, for the Bonneville Power Administration as a technical writer and editor, and for a couple of different radio stations as an announcer and newscaster (news director in one station—so I know how to fact check).

And for a substantial period of my life, I have worked as a professional musician, singing traditional folk songs and ballads in clubs, coffeehouses, on both educational and commercial television, and in concerts and recitals. And I have also written a couple dozen articles for various music magazines.

This I consider to be my real profession.

No, I have not lived in a trailer park. But from time to time I have lived in small, one room apartments, and at one time, in a converted garage. To keep costs low so I could pay for school and lessons.

I did not say that everyone in Mississippi and Alabama are "trailer trash." I didn't call anyone "trailer trash."

There's a difference between mindlessly slogging away at an equally mindless job, and working for a time at something which may be grunt work, but having goals and ambitions that you're working toward.

That's what I did. And that, obviously, is what Barack Obama did. I don't think either his father (who left the marriage early on) or his mother were wealthy, so Obama had to work for what he got.

Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and the Harvard Law School, and getting into schools like that in the first place is an achievement. At Harvard, he became president of the Harvard Law Review, not something that gets handed out to just any yahoo that asks for it, you have to earn it by demonstrating that you can handle the job. Then he became a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Which is a pretty damned good prerequisite for becoming President of the United States. Not every president has been that well qualified!

Not bad for a bi-racial kid whose father deserted the family early on and was raised by a single mother.

And were it not for the Republicans in Congress throwing gratuitous roadblocks in his way every chance they get, Obama would have accomplished a helluva lot more than he has.

The log jam will be broken if we re-elect Obama AND get some of those obstructionist Republicans out of there! So one shouldn't just concentrate on the presidential campaign, one should vet one's Senators and Congressional Representatives as well.

Both Senators from my state, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell are fine. Cantwell is up for re-election, so I'm working for her. And my Representative, Jim McDermott, 7th district, is also fine.

Traveling in the musical circles that I do, I have a number of friends who are black jazz musicians, although I'm not into jazz that much myself. And I have a few black friends who are not musicians. One is a very talented writer. And—the Associate Minister at the church my wife and I attend is black.

This'll get up your nose:   While attending the University of Washington, a friend introduced me to the Cosmopolitan Club at the U. of W. branch of the YM/YWCA. The membership was made up of a mix of American students and foreign exchange students from all over the world. There, I met, and had a chance to get to know, several students from India, Egypt, Turkey, and several European countries. I've drunk Turkish coffee brewed in the traditional way by a student from Turkey, I've discussed philosophy with an absolutely brilliant student from India, I dated an English girl a few times. I also gave guitar lessons to a French girl (named Michelle, by the way), who paid for her lessons by tutoring me in French, which I had taken in high school, but was now growing a bit rusty from lack of opportunity to use. I had a chance to discuss the Middle East situation at the time with a student from Egypt. And I was at the Pizza Haven on University Way, just off campus when Legson Kyara, a student I knew from Kenya (Black. Very black) tied into the first pizza he had ever eaten.

And an Indian exchange student who had brought his sitar with him from India played for me, explained the instrument, and explained some of the intricacies of Ragas (a type of Indian music). And he showed that it could also be used for Anglo-American music by playing a very creditable rendition of Greensleeves. The Beatles used a sitar from time to time.

By the way, despite that fact that Nazir would be racially classified as "Caucasion" (White), his skin was actually darker in hue than Obama's.

At one of the first coffee houses I sang in, I often exchanged songs before audiences with a Swedish exchange student named Britt Mongstadt, who also accompanied herself on the guitar. She sang Swedish folk songs, I sang British and American songs.

No, Mr. Krinkle, I enjoy meeting and talking with people from other countries, races, and cultures.

It enriches my own life.

My son had much the same experiences when he moved to a black area in London. It caused him to realise that there is good and evil in every race, not just the "palefaces".
