Is this the one?
You just have to spell the name Henery
And if you look at the pictures down the side you'll find the record cover too. Click on that to hear the original.

Thank you so much. It was a smash hit when I was a kid. I miss the 60's.

That smash hit was by Joe Brown & The Bruvvers in the 60's. Nobody had heard of 'erman or 'is blastid 'ermits in them days. :-)

There are things about the 60s I miss, but Herman's Bloody Hermits ( along with Freddie and The Dreamers and others of that ilk) are definitely not one of them!

A prime indicator that there was as much crap around back then as there is now, IMO :-)

Now The Spencer Davis Group; The Nice; The Moody Blues; Quintessence; the original incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, etc, etc, are things I miss about the 60s!

NOT Herman'sd Hermits.

Actually, I thought Herman's Hermits sucked. I liked Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, the Ventures, etc. I just have that stupid song stuck in my head. I am Henry, you know.

That song's an awful lot older than Joe Brown and the Bruvvers.

Shame that you can only refer to Bloody Herman's Hermits - ALL they recorded was the chorus three times and NONE of the verses !!

Harry Champion, the original music-hall singer of the song, was famous also for several other music-hall classics, such as Any Old Iron, Boiled Beef And Carrots, Ginger You're Barmy ~~ and one well-known to Catters on which there have been several threads, as it was adopted into the Copper Family repertoire, When The Old Dun Cow Caught Fire - see in particular recent thread on Why Shout 'MacIntyre'?

Having been a Herman's Hermits fan as a wee gurl, I was delighted to learn of the English Music Hall origins of this song - and the extensive verses - as the result of adult exposure to such delights as Roberts & Barrand and David Jones.

David Jones has it on a couple of his recordings, but "Songs of Exquisite Taste" is my favorite. I clearly recall John & Tony singing this one during their Folk Alliance "Main stage" showcase at the 1995 Boston Folk Alliance - the one where singer-songwriters started to overwhelm the traditionalists. God Bless mature tastes, even in silliness - John & Tony or David do Henry VIII with more verve than Herman ever could muster. They also have a much more interesting repertoire than 90% of the Singer-songwriters at that event.

Joanne in Cleveland, traddie at heart with a taste in "exquisite" songs.
