Have had 3 Fender MIMs. A Strat, Tele and P-bass. There was no discernable difference in the playability, tone, quality of workmanship or assembly. They were 1/3 the cost of their 'Made In America' counterparts. As a working musician and not a political policy maker it seemed to me to be a no brainer. Got a lot of good years service and passed them on to my nephews.

Now I've got a 81 Takamine 12 String, 87 Alvarez-Yairi 6 w/a LR Baggs pick-up from a Seagull, Washburn S3M mandolin w/K&K pick-up, 76 Gibson Grabber 3 bass w/reverse P-bass pick-up configuration and an 83 American Strat. They serve my purpose and sound great.

Alvarez, Washburn and Aria mandolins of the late 70s BLOW away the craftmanship and tonal qualities of any Gibson mando of the same era. Martin sued Takmine for logo copyright infringement because the Pac-Rim builders were making better guitars cheaper. Gibson the same way. Fender electrics were an embarassment in those days. HONDO for cying out loud was making better electrics. We wont even bring Musicman into the discussion.

I know. I purchased and used Hondos for years before paring down my collection of all unnecessary instruments.

So, one can hurl insults back and forth, but the fact remains there are 2 kinds of instruments. Good ones and bad ones, regardless of snob appeal or country of origin.

Henry - When we in UK can buy a Martin or Gibson and NOT pay double the US price , more people over here will buy them - EXCEPT the entry level stuff , which IS Crap !
Until such time , a Chinese all solid wood guitar for a quarter the price of the cheapest Martin will get MY vote every time .

Fender guitars these days are junk... Not sure about Gibsons butI suspect they are junk, as well...

But, as I have confessed before, my main acoustic geetar is a S.Yari from the 60s (Japanese) but it replaced my original Martin D-18 which I passed down to my great niece...

My other instruments are American made...

Although Henry's instruments are an actual Dobro and an actual National as indicated by the upper case D and N, some folks refer to all spider bridge instruments as "dobros" and all biscuit or tri-cone instruments as "nationals". Even before Gibson bought the Dobro name, OMI, previous owners, tried very hard to discourage this. The Dobro Newsletter was forced to change its name to Resophonic Echos since it advertised non-Dobro resophonic guitars. I assume that they were afraid of the word "dobro" becoming generic like Cellophane or Kleenex. It seems that they are fighting a losing battle.

Dobro is a brand name of resophonic guitar. I believe the name is currently owned by Gibson. If a guitar is not made by Dobro (Gibson), it is not a Dobro. Single resonator guitars come in biscuit and spider bridges. Biscuit bridges are most often used for slide or blues playing while spider bridges are often used for lap style bluegrass playing. There are Dobros with biscuit bridges and spider bridges and there are non Dobros with biscuit and spider bridges. There are also wooden bodied National guitars with spider bridges.
There are also other types of resophonic guitars, some with three resonators.
I have also seen fake resonator guitars with a cover plate fastened to a top painted with a silver circle.

I have an Eastman oval hole archtop 800E, hand-carved copy of a Gibson L4 prior to Lloyd Loar and F-holes. It's a work of art. It hardly gets out of the case let alone the house. It was made in China in 2003

My old Guild flat-top sounds great too, so does the '67 Gibson Heritage.

as far as electrics go... the Parker Fly Classic made in Mass. USA, 2000 is so good it's scarey. a quality axe can come from anywhere, (eg. a lot of 70's Japanese models) sometimes we get lucky

Not to put too fine a point on it, but part of the reason the American economy is having problems is that it's been supporting a couple of spectacularly expensive wars. America's trade deficit has to do with the fact that, though it produces and exports many remarkable and remunerative things, it spends more on imported oil than it takes in. These problems are not going to get fixed if we all buy used American guitars.

I played a Martin D18V in a store. Very rich tone. Too pricey. Acoustics are too delicate for me to drop big bucks on. I do have two really nice metal bodied resonators though

Hi, Henry. The Larrivee I have is a mid-size guitar which I play in an open tuning. It is about four years old. It is developing good sound, but it does lack a bit in tone on the treble strings, especially up the neck towards fret 12. I'm hoping age will take care of that; either my hearing going to the dogs or the wood settling in. Compared to the Martin there is no bass to speak of.

Had a Gibson B20 flattop once. Lovely small body acoustic. An old friend helped me replace the bridge, saddle, nut, and tuners to improve its tone and tunability. It was made in the USA with a crappy plastic adjustable bridge, plastic saddle and nut, and some worn out tuners. However the design otherwise, and the wood, was good so it was worth reconditioning. Foolishly sold it to another friend.

Have some Fenders right now. Tele, Strat, and a cheap acoustic for student use. I assume your USA has trade agreements with the countries of origin like my Canada does. You do know that many guitars are made of woods that come from places other than their place of manufacture? Just askin'.

Most of my instruments are Canadian made, Beneteau, House, Godin, Cox. My Toyota Rav4 is also Canadian made.

I have never used Fender or Gibson guitars.

My first good guitar was a Martin 00-28-G, top of the line classic. A few years later I traded it for a Vincente Tatay classic, made in Barcelona. Why? The Tatay was a much better guitar in terms of volume and richness of tone. And, by the way, it cost about two-thirds of what I paid for the Martin.

When I became associated with the Seattle Classic Guitar Society, I became acquainted with a whole variety of really fine instruments owned by other members. One of the members helped me buy a hand-made Flamenco guitar from Arcangel Fernandez in Madrid. I got it for about $175.00, including case, customs, and air freight from Madrid. Outrageous instrument!! Big sound, rich warm tone, and it definitely had a Spanish accent.

Then I learned that Carlos Montoya had retired his Barbero and started using a Fernandez. I've been told that my Arcangel is worth around $18,000 now. No sale! I'd sooner sell my right arm!

I also have a Japanese-made classic imported by José Oribé of San Diego, inspected and approve for sale under his label. Like many Japanese-made classic guitars, it looks exactly like a José Ramirez (played by Segovia during his last few years of concertizing). A few years back, I did a program of folk songs and ballads for the Seattle Classic Guitar Society using the Oribé. Several members own Ramirez guitars, and because my $350.00 Japanese import looked and sounded like a Ramirez concert guitar, everyone there assumed that it was!

I also own a couple of small travel guitars made by Sam Radding, founder of Go-Guitars, also in San Diego. Both Go-GWs, one a nylon-string model and the other a steel-string model. They look the love-child of an unnatural affair between a guitar and a canoe paddle, but they sound amazing for such a small soundbox! I've actually used the nylon-string model for a number of performances, including a full-blown concert. A couple of times, I've been asked if it's a period instrument of some kind.

Some of the finest guitars in the world are made in Japan. One of the world's top makers of classical concert guitars is Masaru Kohno—who went to Spain and apprenticed under Arcangel Fernandez.

If you're a professional musician and wish to give your audiences the best musical experience you can, you buy your instruments with that in mind. Wherever the maker happens to live.

Why did I buy some of my instruments from Spain and Japan? Because at the time, no one in this country was making instruments of that quality. And anything even attempting to approach that quality would have cost me ten times what I paid for the instruments I have.

P. S. My automobile is a 1999 Toyota Corolla. Lest Mr. Krinkle have a wall-eyed fit, let me point out that Toyota has manufacturing plants in fourteen U.S. states including Texas, Indiana, Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, and California. Employing American workers.

The irony of the Toyota pick-up truck with a bumper sticker that says "Buy American" is not quite that ironic these days. It's my understanding that there are more American-made parts in a Toyota than there are in a Chevrolet.

My computer (Hewlett-Packard laptop with a 17" screen and all the fixin's—a very nice device) was made in China. I didn't know that at the time I bought it, but it would hardly have made any difference because I don't know of ANY computers that are actually made and/or assembled in the U. S.

I went to The Twelfth Fret in Toronto a few years back to look at the Gibson A model mandolin they had on their website. I saw some nice looking mandolins called Eastman on the wall. I took the Gibson, my old Washburn and an Eastman into the back room and played the same tunes on each mandolin. The Eastman blew the others away and it was $300 cheaper than the Gibson. That was seven years ago and the mandolin has continued to improve with age. It is definitely NOT garbage.
Granted, if I thought that the people at Eastman who made my mandolin were involved with the Tiananmen massacre, I would not have purchased that mandolin, but I have no reason to believe that, just because they're Chinese, any more than to believe that the people at the LaSiDo Company, makers of Godin, Simon & Patrick, Norman, Art & Lutherie, and LaPatrie guitars were responsible for the Native Residential School atrocities just because they're Canadians.
I have to admit that I've also bought American instruments, even though many Canadian jobs are being sent back to the United States.

I know what you mean Henry, I try not to buy anything made in America - even if it has a safe European badge, like Mercedes. I'd hate to think I was contributing to the US way of life, the way all those immigrants have almost wiped out the native population. That's a terrible state of affairs. Seagull is a good cheap guitar. I found a Entourage Mini Jumbo for $175 used.
A great guitar for cheap. I may horsetrade it up to a Larrivee one day.
I love to horsetrade. Got a 1965 Gibson LGO for a Harmony Sovereign. And it's my main guitar now. And I have a housefull of great guitars. None Chinese.
I got a Line6 amp I think is junk.Chinese. But it came in a package deal. Used.

I sympathise Henry. I don't like the Chinese government nd its human rights record. But talking bullshit about Chinese products doesn't help really.

I always wanted a solid wood Yamaha guitar but I couldn't afford one til they moved production to China. Is it as good as the jap product, no its not. Buts its all I can afford.

Similarly I own three Fender acoustasonic amps. They're all excellent. I think all made in China.

No doubt our forefathers who suffered as POW's in the hands of the japs would find it hard to forgive us. And as the song says, we forgave the Germans and now we are friends'.

I have no idea what the answer to all this puzzling stuff is, I only know that I have to function as well as I can as an artist. Less than that would be selling short all the people who have supported me.

If I buy a pair of Chinese made work gloves (yes, I work to make a living. I don't sit at a desk and computer and get fatter and fatter) they don't last the day before they fall apart. American ones lasted me for months. Buy Chinese crap. Don't be surprised when you have to keep buying it over and over. And how do you like the counterfeit Gibsons and Martins that keep turning up? I bet you'd rather have one of those than the real McCoy.

They (along with other manufacturers) outsource most of their production overseas. So why buy from them and send jobs overseas? I try to buy used, myself. American made if possible.
