Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie From: alanabit Date: 20 Aug 12 - 10:06 AM He will always be remembered for that one song. It was a song which caught the mood of its time. I know very little about the man who sang it. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie From: bassen Date: 20 Aug 12 - 11:21 AM Loved that song, then hated it. Then after a long time heard the beauty of his voice in it, loved it again. The flip side of the single had a song that meant a lot more to me at one time... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie From: GUEST,999 Date: 20 Aug 12 - 11:30 AM The song was written by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas. For sure it struck a note in the so-called 1967 Summer of Love. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 20 Aug 12 - 11:45 AM Scott certainly had a wonderful voice. He appeared as a "Papa" in a later incarnation of "The Mamas and Papas". His first album - which I think was produced by John Phillips - is worth a listen. A nice collection of interesting songs. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie 10 Jan 1939 - 18 Aug 2012 From: GUEST,Stim Date: 20 Aug 12 - 12:57 PM He and John Phillips were folkies first, as The Journeymen. Run, Maggie, Run-The Journeymen and still very much worth listening to. Also, John's daughter, McKenzie, is named after him. |

'Hey friend wake up, I'm throwing rocks at your window pane.... What's the difference if we don't come back Who's gonna miss us in a year or so... Robyn |

Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie 10 Jan 1939 - 18 Aug 2012 From: bassen Date: 21 Aug 12 - 11:02 AM That's the one Robyn. Young and feeling out of sync with everything around me, it was those two lines that spoke to me. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie 10 Jan 1939 - 18 Aug 2012 From: GUEST,Lindy Date: 22 Aug 12 - 01:27 AM Ah, yes, I remember that song and loved to sing along whenever I heard it. Saw Scott on some TV program some years ago and of course he sang that song. He still sounded and looked good. I never got to San Francisco but I did wear "flowers in my hair" in L.A. I always thought he had a really good voice. RIP Scott. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie 10 Jan 1939 - 18 Aug 2012 From: GUEST,wordfella Date: 25 Aug 12 - 10:25 AM Widely believed, but not so. When Miss Phillips was born in 1959, Scott was still Philip Wallach Blondheim. In her bio, Miss Phillips says that McKenzie was a name from her mother's side of the family. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Scott McKenzie 10 Jan 1939 - 18 Aug 2012 From: Pete Jennings Date: 25 Aug 12 - 11:44 AM The opening bars of the song always send a shiver down my spine. One of the all-time classic pop songs. |
