Subject: RE: Obit: Fred Brierley 21 August 2012 [funeral info] From: GUEST Date: 28 Aug 12 - 02:14 PM Just back from bidding Fred farewell. Nice service with what is left of the Ancient Mariners leading the singing. Packed church with lots of folky friends and family. Retired to pub afterwards to continue talking about and remembering the legend that was Fred Brierley. Legends never die they just keep going on. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Fred Brierley 21 August 2012 [funeral info] From: nutty Date: 24 Aug 12 - 09:18 AM Heard the sad news at Whitby. Fred was indeed ultra enthusiastic about folk music and its people. I've never known anyone quite so adept as Fred when it came to promoting his events. I often joked about the number of trees it took to produce all those publicity leaflets. He was a lovely man who always had the right song for the right moment and he will be missed. Sadly I can't make the funeral but will be thinking of him RIP Fred. Hazel Bolton |
Subject: RE: Obit: Fred Brierley 21 August 2012 [funeral info] From: GUEST,Michael Burns Date: 23 Aug 12 - 02:34 PM I met Fred for the first time only last year, my first at Sedgefield, but it was clear what a nice man he was. Bumped in to Bert Draycott last night at Whitby and when I mentioned going to Sedgefield, he told me Fred had died. Reading the tributes to him you realise what a great contribution he made to the musical traditional in the North East |

Singer, club and festival organiser, spoons afficionado, glass engraver, sailor, cook and inventor of a peculiar Christmas competition in which pairs of people stood face to face and sang at each other until one of them lost the plot.
