Just back from bidding Fred farewell. Nice service with what is left of the Ancient Mariners leading the singing. Packed church with lots of folky friends and family. Retired to pub afterwards to continue talking about and remembering the legend that was Fred Brierley. Legends never die they just keep going on.

Many is the good time that was had at Fred's after the South Tyne Folk and Blues club on Friday nights. He was one of the old school folkies and a great bloke.

Heard the sad news at Whitby.

Fred was indeed ultra enthusiastic about folk music and its people.
I've never known anyone quite so adept as Fred when it came to promoting his events. I often joked about the number of trees it took to produce all those publicity leaflets.

He was a lovely man who always had the right song for the right moment and he will be missed.

Sadly I can't make the funeral but will be thinking of him

RIP Fred.

Hazel Bolton

I met Fred for the first time only last year, my first at Sedgefield, but it was clear what a nice man he was. Bumped in to Bert Draycott last night at Whitby and when I mentioned going to Sedgefield, he told me Fred had died. Reading the tributes to him you realise what a great contribution he made to the musical traditional in the North East

Farewell Fred. Singer, club and festival organiser, spoons afficionado, glass engraver, sailor, cook and inventor of a peculiar Christmas competition in which pairs of people stood face to face and sang at each other until one of them lost the plot. The land of the the Pit Yakkers will not be quite the same again.

I had intended contacting him for information about Sedgefield Folk Festival and was shocked to find it was too late to contact him. I met him through Trevor Lister and Folk Roundabout, I think it was at the Pot and Vlass. I didn't know him very well but he always friendly. Condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear this news. I have known Fred since he first started coming to South Tyne Folk & Blues in the late sixties as an enthusiastic audience member through to working with him on around three South Tyneside Folk Festivals in the seventies along with Alan Patchett and the late Bob Gilroy. Fred invited me to his eightieth Birthday in November when I last saw him in March at Birtley's 50th birthday.
RIP Captain.

I'm sorry to hear that. Another sad loss for the North East scene. I always remember Fred doing his rounds with Folk Roundabouts hot off the press - dropping them off at The Colpitts and never staying! I think I last saw him when he came along to one of the Friday night Queen's Head singarounds we did at the Morpeth Gathering - maybe 2010.
