Subject: Linstead Market MIDI From: MorwenEdhelwen1 Date: 23 Aug 12 - 06:43 AM Does anyone know where i can find an MIDI for a full version of Linstead Market (at least four verses)? I want to record myself singing an actual folk song, and since I can manage patwa, I thought I might try LM, just to see how I sound singing it with accompaniment. Mostly I've just sung it accapella, varying the chorus a bit. I found one, but it only has two verses. "Carry mi ackee" and "Everybody come a feel-up". I mostly sing the Lewin version. |
Subject: RE: Linstead Market MIDI From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 Aug 12 - 12:25 PM I found a nice MIDI on Wikipedia. I can make it play more verses, but first I need to know how long a verse is. (I've never heard anybody sing it.) Please type out a verse and post it here so I see how long it is, and then I'll make a MIDI with 4 verses. If you want more, then please let me know at the same time you post the verse. |

Subject: RE: Linstead Market MIDI From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Aug 12 - 10:31 AM Hmmm. When I try to sing the words to the tune I have in mind, they don't seem to fit. We better check to see if you and I are talking about the same tune. Here's the URL for the article I used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linstead_Market Near the bottom of the page it says "External Links" in big type, and below that in small, purple type it says "Hear a MIDI rendition of the song." Click on the purple to listen. Now there are three questions to answer: Is that the tune you have in mind? how many verses do you want to sing? Isn't that MIDI going way too fast? Try singing along with it and see what you think. (I can easily slow it down.) ========== Thank you for bringing me happy memories. I had a vinyl LP of steel drum music once, and song was on it. It's a charming piece. |
Subject: RE: Linstead Market MIDI From: MikeL2 Date: 24 Aug 12 - 02:40 PM Hi Leenia I don't know what tune Morwhen has in mind. The midi is the tune I have always known and recognised as Linstead Market. I seems to be at about the right speed for me when I used to play and sing it. Like you I am interested in steel band music. Brings home some fond memories. Thanks for the thread. Regards MikeL2 |

Subject: RE: Linstead Market MIDI From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Aug 12 - 09:34 PM I've sent the MIDI to Joe. I learned something interesting about this kind of music recently. I went to a party, where two women were playing Caribbean music. They were both professional musicians. One sang and the other played many instruments. She said that the steel drum was the hardest instrument she'd ever played, because there is no connection between the sound of a note and its location on the drumhead. I thought that was interesting. |
