Subject: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: Kampervan Date: 24 Aug 12 - 08:01 PM So, another year, another hop festival. Any clues as to where and when the (participation welcome) sessions might be this year? K/van |
Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 25 Aug 12 - 01:11 PM Sorry. I took on the job of leading the sessions last year at the Bull but my band has a booking on the Saturday night elsewhere this year. I think the programme talks about 'open mike' at the bull which might mean a session. If you find out please let us know as we like to do something during the day. We hope to make the Crown and anchor session on the friday evening and hope we are not drowned out by musicians in the back room this year. FloraG |

Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 29 Aug 12 - 03:19 PM For more years than I like to remember we have run a session at the Crown and Anchor - its the one nearest the camp site. Its mainly the campers - but has always had some good people there. It was spoiled a bit last year by a group of musicians drowning un out. I hope its back to normal this friday. Its a mixed session - anything goes. FloraG |
Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: Richard Bridge Date: 29 Aug 12 - 03:41 PM Although I was not there last year I gather there was more than one side to the version of events stated above. When I have wished to avoid the front room of the Crown and Anchor I have successfully used its smoking area, and I have also asked to sing and been made most welcome (well, the landlord bought me beer all night) at the next pub down - is it the Elephant? Manitas - you will see that Flora will be at the Crown and Anchor session on the Friday Night. I am unlikely to be there. |
Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: Manitas_at_home Date: 30 Aug 12 - 04:01 AM Thanks for sticking the threads together - I should have searched first. I'm more into tunes sessions myself but if its a lively session and musicians are welcome to play along with the singers I'm happy enough so I'll pop in and have a look. I'll be the short bearded one with the melodeon and whistles (like half the folk scene!)What time does it start? |
Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 30 Aug 12 - 04:18 AM The usual answer is ' when we get there ' but some time soon after 8 is about right. The usual crew are morris musicians, singers and mummers. There are very few precious singers - most pick songs and tunes with good join in sections and in instrument friendly keys. I try to not let it get dominated by unaccompanied singing nor wall to wall melodeon - a bit of both is good. Morris musicians are used to singing in G or D. I have had some of my best sessions ever in this pub - but you can never guarentee in advance what a session will be like. I do hope Faversham will survive with some folk content. The whole thing is run now by a voluntary committee and is more like a full time job for the key members than a hobby. The Bull is doing sessions during the day but I have no info on these. The Bull made us very welcome last year. FloraG |

Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: GUEST,Cliff Date: 30 Aug 12 - 04:55 AM Not a welcoming session if it'a the same po-faced crew that usually get in the Bear |
Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: banjoman Date: 30 Aug 12 - 05:19 AM Wont be able to make it this year due to medical and scooter problems but hope everyone has a great time. |

Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 30 Aug 12 - 05:39 AM Cliff - playing music and especially singing often uses the same parts of the anatomy that going to the loo does. It explains why a lot of singers look constipated when they sing. FloraG |

Subject: RE: Faversham hop festival 2012 From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 31 Aug 12 - 04:34 AM Looking forward to the festival tonight. It always seem to be good weather in faversham. I hope the musos have found another pub to play in - rather than the one used by the campers. I thought last year was a bit discourteous. There is usually something for everyone - camping/parking/street entertainment/sessions/brewery tours/live music/ sheps beer. faversham itself is a historic market town. It gets a bit crowded for wheelchairs and prams. FloraG |
