Chris Wade and her colleagues seem to get a great deal of flack. In my view anyone who organises live music gets my vote. And if it happens to be a successful financial enterprise then well done. It seems a great move to go to the Racecourse.
Best of luck with it

I'm delighted that Chris Wade is willing to oversee the transfer of the festival to a new site. Festival organisers have to take advantage of whatever local facilities there are, and Adastra are fortunate to have the racecourse as an alternative venue.

I'm sure the festival will still have a character of its own. I don't see why the fringe shouldn't continue unchanged in the town.

Several festivals already use sports clubs. Ely takes place under canvas at the rugby club; Shepley is held in a marquee at the cricket club. Rossendale is an open-air festival at Ramsbottom cricket club.

The Leisure Centre has certainly been a good home for the festival, as well an excellent campsite. However, the festival did occupy the centre for a long weekend in the summer holidays.

Although the Picture Playhouse holds memories of many wonderful concerts, it was certainly not a comfortable venue. The loss of Nellie's as a music venue was another blow. The sale of the Playhouse will fund the renovation of the Memorial Hall.

I quite enjoyed the bits of the fringe I went to this year but I WOULD like a chance to give back the hard grey Yorkshire germ that I caught that weekend (some of you may remember me being off my beer at times) which is STILL with me in the form of a slight lung infection. It must be well hard as I normally heal quite well and I am on my second course of antigrotties.

I think it makes sense to have this as a big marquee event and the area by the race course is suitable and not too far from some really good pubs. The loss of the Playhouse means that the choice of venues is no longer viable. It never really stretched that much into Beverley anyway and there was always a mixed response from pubs towards fringe events. Does this mean we have to wear posh hats? hope we make racing news!

I'm one of the people that doesn't help the festival I'm sure.

I go every year but to this day have never been to an event.

I enjoy the fringe and - wherever the main thing that I have never been to is - I have a sneaking suspicion that it won't make a lot of difference to people like me who just go for a bit of a sing :)

If a 'big' racetrack Beverley makes someone lots of money - presumably because lots of people were interested and prepared to pay money etc - than what bit of that bothers people? If it's that the performers aren't paid enough (that is where people who take risk make excessive profits) then I think that is a different argument.

The walk to the racetrack is good for you anyway.

I wish people would check their facts before making wild statements about Adastra making a fortune from the festival. Also, check out the real reasons why the festival has to move - the leisure centre is not an option any longer.

Don't get too excited.

(Whooops nearly spelt excited incorrectly, now that wouldn't do.)

This thread has already given us three or is it four different ways of spelling Beverley!

During Steve Gardham's presentation at Whitby last week one of the topics discussed was the different spellings of place names - and that was before the internet.

We went to the first ,sixteen Beverly Festivals but then gave up it was obvious then which way it was going and was no longer our type of thing. Did drop in for a Singaround this year and was thinking of going again next year for the fringe but now hav e doubts. The thing is the use of the term fringe is rathyer odd as if people getting together to sing and play is not part of the main thing.

The 'people's festival' is an interesting phrase. Why do we, as a movement, allow the commercial interests to take over what are essentially celebrations of our common culture? If the organisers drop out as at Beverley some years ago, or at Hull Shanty Festival last year (see the thread elsewhere on Mudcat) and ditto at Sidmouth a while back, a bunch of enthusiasts get together and make it happen. But then everyone sits back and lets the commercial organisations take over. Why?

It is a shame because the atmosphere of the twon and the great pubs (apart from Nellie's)add so much to the atmosphere, I can see the main festival and the fringe become even more separate. Beverely is a wonderful town (well, I was born there) and gave the festival it's special ambience. I can, however, see the advantages of moving to the racecourse - we'll just have to wait and see.

..... scope for a 'Beverley Fringe' nearer the centre perhaps so that the locals have a chance to join in.

I'm assuming that the campsite etc. will be at the racecourse to try to keep everyone 'onsite' rather than spending their money in Beverly

It has always been Chris's ambition to join the main stage festivals.

I'm only amazed it has taken so long.

We stopped going to Beverley when Nellies ceased to be involved and it became "find the folk tradition".

Beverley itself is well worth a visit at most times of the year. The Minster is amazing and there is scope for lots more events outwith of folk. Thirty years ago was a good starting point but only the "folk" world realised that.

As regards Adastra making a fortune - as someone once said; "the only way to make a small fortune out of folk music is to start with a large fortune"!!!

That is a real shame moving further and further away from the centre and people of
Beverley. Adastra the agency running it stand to take a fortune and leaving the original people's festival just a distant thought. Why does it always have to come down to money making big style and people not being satisfied with making a steady profit which is fine people have to make a living. Adastra once again make mega money on their own artists never seemed right to me!!

So ..... for it's 30th anniversary next year Beverley Festival is moving to Beverley Racecourse.
1 mile North West of the town. About 2 miles away from it's previous location.

see here :- Folk Fest Move
