Subject: Mythagos, Lavondyss, Robert Holdstock From: GUEST,wyrdolafr Date: 28 Aug 12 - 05:35 AM Last night, I was recommending some 'fanstasy' books to a family friend when I realised that one of my recommendations might be of interest to some here. Any fans of the Robert Holdstock 'mythago' books? I've only read the first two in the series, but they're a great read. The potential appeal for 'Mudcatters' is that it deals with idea 'folk memory' and how these are 'stored' and 'projected' back at people and places. The second book in the series, Lavondyss, has Ralph Vaughan Williams in song-collecting mode as a recurring character. RVW and the young female protagonist also watch a very 'primitive' Morris side at one point. I'm presuming this is where the Sussex Morris side 'Mythago Morris' get their name? History pedants will probably end-up throwing the book against the wall, but if you just go with the flow it's an enjoyable drift down a river through a 'lost Albion'. If anyone has read these and can suggest anything similar, it would be appreciated. |
