I could have sworn we had the lyrics here on Mudcat, but my two quick looks with filter failed to turn them up.

So here's a site with a set of lyrics. I haven't checked them against the recording though, and I don't have time to do it now, so caveat emptor: Shave 'em Dry.

Mick

I was a guest at the Ga. Tech WREK radio station. During the blues program.
I gave it to the announcer to play.
The phone switchboard lit up!

I think it is in the last verse:

For working men's two dollars
to fit (NOT KISS) my ass

and earlier on:

Your balls hang down a bell clapper (NOT SAPPER)

I think the first person to put these lyrics in print was Paul Oliver
in his book "Screening the Blues" where he got verse five wrong hearing 'Heaven' instead of 'Hell' and in the second line: I'll be fucking in the studio just to fuck that to leather instead of 'til the clock strikes eleven.

An amusing song by a great singer. Lucille Bogan was one of the best of the female blues artists in my book and teamed with Walter Roland hard to beat.

The lyrics to SHAVE 'EM DRY are in a thread called "Bawdy music :-)" here:

http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=29785#1012250

I found them using the Subject filter on this page: http://mudcat.org/forumsearch.cfm.

That's why it's important to put the song title in the subject line when posting lyrics. I hope all our moderators are diligently checking to see that this is done. (They can fix this if the original poster has forgotten to do it.)

Two versions were recorded, the unexpurgated version was unissued until released on LP:

SCREENING THE BLUES   LP CBS(UK) 63288
Recorded 1927-1936
Contents Thieving blues (Jack Ranger) -- Papa ain't no Santa Claus (Mama ain't no Christmas tree) (Butterbeans and Susie) -- Denomination blues (Washington Phillips) -- Nobody knows (what the good deacon does) (Hambone Willie Newburn) -- Roll and tumble blues (Hambone Willie Newburn) -- Policy dream blues (Bumble Bee Slim) -- He's in the ring doing the same old thing (Memphis Minnie) -- Joe Louis strut (Memphis Minnie) -- Sissy man blues (George Noble) -- Phonograph blues (Robert Johnson) -- It's tight like that (Clara Smith) -- Down on Pennsylvania Avenue (Bertha Idaho) -- Sweet petunia (Curley Weaver) -- Shave 'em dry (Bessie Jackson) -- Shave 'em dry (Lucille Bogan)

Best wishes, Thomas.

Both versions more recently issued in a total of 20 tracks on Columbia/Legacy CD CK65705 "The Best of Lucille Bogan".

Should still be available. A great disc even without the unexpurgated song.
