Dave's other popular song was Luce Brothers which both music and chorus are used in The Fishermen's Friends' song Silver Darlin's on the CD Proper Job. One of their group members wrote verse lyrics to Dave's melody.

The Whalebone Cutter by David Littlefield

chorus: I am a whalebone cutter, my hands are smooth but worn.
I never sailed around Good Hope, nor around Cape Horn.

My parents they were immigrants to Bridgeport they did come.
My father joined the dressbone mill, later his two sons.
For the mill pays good wages and the hours are not too long.
And there's plenty to do for a capital crew, so we sing this jovial song.
chorus:
At the oil works in Frisco, where many a ship's well found.
Mast to mast and yard to yard at the docks and the wharves around.
They unload their precious cargo, secured in the Arctic grounds.
Then the whalebone's shipped by rail nor'east to be cut in Bridgeport town.
chorus:
First the fringe is sheared for the brush maker and the bone is soaked and steamed.
The grain bone saved and the back bone culled then staved in the splitting machine.
Makes stays for ladies corsets- whips and collars to.
Parasols and forearm bows and the horn that fits the shoe.
chorus:
Here's health to the Frisco whalers, likewise the valiant crew,
of the Andrew Hicks and the Mary Hume and the bold Alexander to....
the ladies of good fashion in whom our work is found.
Bless the rare old polar whale on those bitter icy grounds.
chorus:

Frank,

Forebitter recorded Dave's song on their CD "Unmooring." It's available at Woodenships Music -- www.woodenshipsmusic.com/ -- (I don't know how to make a link, please pardon me), and at other sites as well.
