An old friend of ours died a short time ago.
He'd been a boozer/alchy for many years, it was the drink that did for him in the end. Very funny bloke if you got to know him.
I'd like something not too sombre, 'in poor taste' would be welcome.

When my lovely mate John Flaherty died a dozen years ago, I adapted the old song "He Was A Friend Of Mine" to sing at a couple of memorial gigs and other places.   You can alter the words to suit the person in question.   E.g.

He was a friend of mine x2
If he ever had any money
it went on whisky beer and wine
But he was a friend of mine

and so forth
