On the way back from the Paralympics, in a Docklands light railway carriage, i passed canary wharf and looked at the tall impressive buildings with the names on, Barclays, KPMG banks or financial institutions. On the long drive home North I passed derelict workshops and factories, a lot of food storage depots. Back home things are pretty desperate, the building industry is about out on its feet, have you seen the utube vid of crocodiles and hippos packed like sardines in a muddy puddle and antelope trying to take a drink from it, well folks that is what it is like up here. The new initiative of reducing affordable housing requirements are laughable, for a start, and this is not generally known, that if a developer agreed to build 50% social housing on a particular plot of land they got a 100% grant, or were given the land (same thing) and through either naivety, incompetence or fraud were under no obligation to actually start building the houses. Councils have targets to hit for social housing and are unable to borrow money to fund them themselves so have to rely on the developers, the developers, having got their land for free are now using their leverage to reduce the amount of social housing they have to build to increase their profits. What the Uk really needs is to return to making things and that is where the energy and money must be spent. If it doesn't happen we shall end up with a deeply divided society and a wall will have to be built to keep the riff raff out I think it might run parallel on a line just south of Peterborough any other suggestions

The 'tall impressive buildings with names on, Barclays..." etc are all built on sand. The 'empires' they represent are corrupt and the economy they depend on is crumbling.
You're quite right that our salvation lies in making things once more. We used (after the demise of the great heavy industries) to be good at light industry and communications technology, but the Americans, Japanese and Chinese have collared that one. I don't know what we could make that would be profitable.
The Great North/South Divide idea should be consigned to the past. Here in the East (eg Norfolk) things are just as bad as 'up North', unemployment and lack of opportunity, businesses going bust and obvious signs of the recession. MAybe a change of Government would get things moving in the right direction?

you forgot BAe which took over Vickers who took over Armstrongs and is still making Nuclear submarines in Barrow. The tobacco industry have this brilliant product that people burn and get new ones and burn them...... The Armaments industry needs wars so they can sell rockets and bullets. It is a truism that both industries employ a lot of people and spawn very rich companies but in both cases they rely on some of the end recipients to endure pain and death and no one to complain about it enough to ban the production of either!

"What the Uk really needs is to return to making things and that is where the energy and money must be spent."

Make what??

To "make something" it first has to be something people want/need. Having found that "WE" (the UK) has to make it better cheaper and faster than anybody else.

The dumbing down of our nation has left us rather poorly placed to achieve either the identification of the product, or the ability to develope and produce it.

Where on earth do you get the idea that armaments manufacturers NEED wars?? They don't.

Tobacco companies?? When I smoked I seem to remember that I took it up by choice then gave it up likewise.

Oh those wicked companies.

What the UK needs is to GTF out of the EU and rediscover that there is a whole world out there to trade with, to engage with.

what the UK needs.....you know, i am thoroughly bored with reading about the crimes and peculiarities of a strange little sect of people based mainly in the south east of the uk. these people, while appearing to be overwhelmingly well-off and often very wealthy indeed never tire of blaming the rest of us for the state of our country -a country they have no experience of and have plainly very little interest in.
i have often idly thought how good it would be if these creatures would all just go and live on an island somewhere and leave the rest of us alone. they could continue ripping each other off and give the rest of us the chance to build a better way of doing things. this is, of course, stupidly idealistic-the powerful will never give up that power or do the decent thing by choice -we have to fight for it.
however, just as i have never met a real, functioning adult prepared to make a case for the tory 'philosophy' nor have i ever met anyone who literally wants to have a bloody revolution to drive these vermin from our shores - all but a tiny minority of people in our country want to live in aplace that is fair and inclusive and not run by and for the tiny group of strange white, wealthy elitists southern elitists.
i'm boring myself now with this laboured point- anyway to simplify - what would be the effect if a majority of people who are struggling with the effects of the london government, in large parts of england and other parts of the uk, expressed a preference to be 'ruled' from edinburgh?
what if those of us who have children needing education, hope for a functioning health and social care system as we grow older and want a vibrant cultural scene that is inclusive and progressive moved up there? a fairer and more equal society that we play a proper part in? and no trident.
maybe simpler to redraw the line around the south east and follow the example of the falkland islanders -despite living thousands of miles from westminster they choose to be ruled from there. i live about 35 miles from the border - surely -and many others in england - should be able to choose edinburgh as my capital city.
the tory sect has no legitimate case for government in scotland -nor should it in areas where it is clearly working against the interests of the people south of the border.

Who needs a big wall.
Wales has got the Bristol Channel separating it from England (in the South, at least).
Access is then controlled over two river bridges with manned barricades to stop people getting in.
Only drivers entering Wales have to pay a toll (on either bridge). Those leaving can do so for free!

Who would pay to enter Wales?
It is the other way round.
They let you in free but charge you to get out.
