I like it. The rhythms especially. It puts me in mind to the recording I did with Pete Seeger where we did an improvised Pygmy song from the Ituri forest.

It seemed quite musical to me, a good sense of dynamics and interplay with some nice lines from the oud.

I think this music is a good trend, odd instruments, jamming together, and finding
their style of playing.

Gypsy music... Okay, "alt" gypsy music... And rather boring, at that... IMHO...

Why classify it at all? The oddest combo I ever heard was Ravi Shanka and Yehudi Menuhin.

I don't know what I would call it, exactly. I would probably classify the oud-led parts and mandolin-led parts differently if I had heard them separately, though they also work together in tandem.

Though I agree with Stim's description and history, Ethnic Fusion, as a term, holds a "world music" connotation for me, and I'm not sure this fits that bill. It's too poppy for that.

I like it though, whatever it is. I've never seen those instruments played together before.

Nice, anyway.

This music is sometimes called "Ethnic Fusion" or some such thing. It is an eclectic style that incorporates Middle Eastern(Armenian, Turkish. Israeli, Arabic, Persian) soloing with a more contemporary acoustic rhythm. Often, there is a strong element of Flamenco in it, with bits of jazz, classical, and even rock.

George Mgrdichian, was one of the first to play this kind of music. He was an Armenian-American oud player from Philadelphia who played Jazz and Classical. His nephew, Roger, is an active player now.

A lot of Americans who grew up hearing and playing ethnic music for community, and at the same time listening to rock and pop music end up playing this kind of music, and of course there are even more in Middle Eastern cultures who also listen to Western pop and create their own hybrid.

I came across this video while watching bluegrass video on youtube. Very interesting style. I was hoping to find out more about this genre, but I'm not sure what that genre would be! It's somewhere in the folk universe, for sure.
