Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: Noreen Date: 19 Nov 12 - 03:09 AM Thoroughly enjoyed the concert last night, well performed unusual versions of (mostly) familiar shanties, with supplementary information on context and history. Bought the 3 CD set and sang along all the way home- lots of inspiration to learn more lovely songs. Thanks, all :) |

Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: Noreen Date: 11 Nov 12 - 02:47 PM Having heard the wonderful Jeff Warner talk about this project last Friday when he was at the Black Diamond in Birmingham, I'm inspired to drive up to Derby next Sunday to see it. Hey, who needs sleep anyway?! |
Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: Hesk Date: 09 Oct 12 - 03:32 PM Having gone to the Tower Arts Centre last night, I can vouch for the quality of the show. Not rumbustious all out unison singing, but varied and interesting arrangements of Short's songs, with some instrumentation. Each one is a little different to versions that are normally heard, but that just makes it more entertaining. Go along to this show, if you can. It may not be all that you expect from shanty singers, but, neither is it a diluted, sanitised experience. I came away refreshed by Short's versions, and, also stimulated to revisit some of the more commonplace shanties. |
Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: doc.tom Date: 12 Sep 12 - 05:24 AM Reinhard - you'll have to ask the person who said it! No, I don't have their name. On what do you base your opinion that "this is a reenactment by a bunch of wanna-be sailors"? TomB |
Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: Dave Earl Date: 11 Sep 12 - 02:36 AM Will try to catch you at Tenterden for the performance but I will be seeing Tom and Barbara before then at another place where I hope to buy my copy of CD3. See you at W*********y sir and madam Dave |
Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: Reinhard Date: 10 Sep 12 - 03:41 PM "in my opinion the most significant recording of sea shanties ever produced". An accolade indeed! A platitude indeed! Why is this recording significant and what does it signify? All the artists involved sure are wonderful musicians and the songs are very well done, but this is a reenactment by a bunch of wanna-be sailors, not the re-discovery of the lost phonograph recordings of John Short made by Cecil Sharp. |
Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: doc.tom Date: 10 Sep 12 - 08:42 AM That's real shame, Tim. With that line-up, it's not the sort of thing you can re-do easily! |
Subject: RE: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: RTim Date: 09 Sep 12 - 02:54 PM I really wanted to go to the Totton (the place of my birth!!) event - I will be in England at the time, but have an early morning flight out of Heathrow the next day!! So won't be able to make it!! Rats!! Tim Radford |
Subject: Short Sharp Shanties on tour! From: BB Date: 09 Sep 12 - 12:20 PM You may be aware from articles in the folk press and CD reviews of the Short Sharp Shanties project, which is, as one person said, "in my opinion the most significant recording of sea shanties ever produced". An accolade indeed! Now some of those involved in the recordings are taking the songs on tour – only seven dates, so if you can get there, don't miss out! And please let as many of your friends know as possible! So S&A Projects and WildGoose Records present: JEFF WARNER, JACKIE OATES, KEITH KENDRICK, DOUG BAILEY AND TOM & BARBARA BROWN An extraordinary international crew of professional singers and musicians, coming together to perform the songs of one of England's most famous shantymen. For fifty years John Short of Watchet sailed all over the world – these are his work songs: songs that told a ribald tale, gave a commentary on the work in hand, or parodied a current popular song. These are the songs that kept the crews heaving and hauling with a will throughout the great days of sail. IF YOU THINK ALL SEA-SONG GROUPS ARE THE SAME – THINK AGAIN! "Top class singing and playing throughout." "A massive variety of arrangement and delivery." "Rattling good performances." "A fine piece of work." "Sometimes reflective – sometimes more wild." "As bracing as a force six out of Finisterre."
