I typed "Morris" into the thread search and didn't find anything on Garrett, but LOTS of threads on Morris dancing. And no, the Garrett isn't a type of Morris dance.

We've been watching episodes of Saturday Night Live on DVD. 1977, I think. Garrett Morris was one of the comedian/cast members. He opened the St. Patrick's Day show with a beautiful version of "Danny Boy." Wonderful, clear voice. Then in another episode someone asked him if he was "still with Belafonte."

Wikipedia says this: "Morris was a church-choir singer from his youth, trained at the Juilliard School of Music, and graduated from Dillard University in 1958. Early in his career, he soloed with the Harry Belafonte singers...."

Never knew that he was an accomplished singer. Does anyone know anything more about his stint with the Belafonte singers?

I remember him from Saturday Night Live - and never knew he was a singer. That's a nice tidbit of information!

That is interesting,I think I do remember him singing on SNL. Don't know more about his music but he's now a regular on CBS's Mike and Molly- maybe he'll sing us a tune there someday.

Glad to know he's active. Acting is still tough going for most black actors.

I remember hearing Garrett sing--if not on SNL perhaps on a talk show during a personal appearance. I also remember thinking, "Wow, why doesn't he do more of that?"

We just watched an episode where he sang "Proud Mary," the Creedence Clearwater Revival song. But the Tina Turner version of it. The one where she starts off "nice and slow," and ends in overdrive. Well, Morris did that version, dressed as Tina Turner. The "nice and slow" part has another cast member, Mr. Mike, rambling on about rabbits, and then Morris/Tina takes over and wails away while Mr. Mike pulls stuffed bunnies out of his guitar. One of the stranger things so far in this run of episodes. Morris does a bang-up job on the song though. Couldn't find a clip of it on Youtube.
