It's that time of year again!

Merek'n'Dary have arranged another wonderful Banbury Folk Festival for us from 12th - 14th October with headliners Barbara Dixon and Nick Holland!

Banbury is always a welcoming festival with a wide variety of styles and performers, both mainstream and local talent. Click link above for details on the Festival webpages!

We'll be dashing from the Big Sing at Drayton Leisure Centre on Saturday lunchtime to perform in the Trades & Labour Club at 4pm... hopefully can then get to the Mudgather!

Richard: This is a lovely Festival and we wouldn't miss it for the world! Can I suggest camping at Drayton? It may be further out of town, but there's an excellent shuttle bus service and good fun to be had there, especially late night stuff! If you go for the camping only ticket, remember to pay for a bus pass, it's well worth it!

Meanwhile, I'm getting my 'mad money' ready for a swift potter around all the charity shops. Maybe this year I'll count how many there are *grin*

We're camping at Drayton. The caravan is not going to be written off, so everything is fine there. The insurance repairs can be done later - it was only cosmetic anyway. Doesn't stop us from using it. Looking forward to it!

Free music sessions in the Bell Inn PH - Friday evening, Saturday lunchtime and evening and Sunday lunchtime. Ken Scullion and Clive Tierney are leading the Friday and Sunday sessions, Hugh Diamond the Saturday lunchtime and Bill McKinnon Saturday evening.

Oh dear. Looks like there is a clash with the Barbara Dickson concert which we have bought tickets for. Not sure of the exact times of the concert. It just says doors open 2.15 - but if it starts at 3 and it's a fairly long concert, we might miss the Mudgather altogether, or at best only get there for the last hour or something. BU%x*!*3R!!!

I don't believe this! We have been sat on the same small stretch of road on the M5 for the last hour or more and it's still a carpark. Apparently there was a multi car accident a few hours ago and the M5 has been closed. It is open now but only one lane. Looks like we are going to be very late indeed :-(

Another great time had! Sadly, could only make Saturday but was for the best--had we booked the whole weekend we would only have made Saturday anyway due to a family medical emergency. Bit late to the Mudgather, but not too badly so, but HAD to see Something Nasty in the Woodshed first and fortunately the two didn't clash by more than a half hour.

As expected, only managed the Saturday, but it was FAB!!! Early start to run the uke workshop which went well. Lots of ukesters and we had fun. Then the start of the theatre concert: Flaxenby were great... and the still mighty Dave Burland... then had to dep for Copper Kettle hosting The Reindeer Globe Room song session which was terrific (but did clash exactly with the mudgather hence me being a no-show there). Finally had a goat curry - yay! - and then caught the wonderful Rosie Hood's set in The Town Hall before doing the ceilidh. Steamchicken were fabulous and there were loads of enthusiastic dancers. And no wonder: every single dance was a cracker, not a duff one all night. Then went over to the golf club for a late night cuppa and a natter... and home for a domestic Sunday... (it's called "compromise")

It was another great weekend at the "festival of the hugs" - after we eventually got there about 10.30 on Friday night. Started off with a late-night session at Drayton. We didn't get down to the town till Saturday. I've been reliably informed that we missed a GREAT event on Friday night with a Scottish pipe band. What a shame! But we managed to cram a lot into the next couple of days. Saw Rory McLeod and Barbara Dickson, followed by a good part of the Mudgather. Unfortunately we had left the chocolates we bought for it back in our caravan - but we were not left starving. Loved MGAS's little chocolate cornflake thingies, and scored a piece of her cake later on too!

We love the Caribbean food stall - I think it's our favourite of all the ones we've come across, so of course we had to have jerked chicken and plantains. We ate it in the foyer of the Mill Arts Centre while a couple of guys played popular songs and tunes. Great atmosphere! Then it was Patti and Ned, followed by Fake Thackray, Dave Burland and Cosmic Sausage - every one a gem! In fact we didn't see one act we didn't like all weekend!

Then it was back to Drayton for more late night sessioning - but not quite so late as Friday. We had every intention of waking up in time for the singing breakfast, but when the alarm went, bed was too comfortable, so we missed it. Maybe next year...

Sunday was just as good. Caught up with George P and Vanessa whom we hadn't seen for a while - then back in for a sing with the Exmouth Shanty Men, and the brilliant Becky Wolff and Steamchicken (probably the highlight performance of the festival for us) This resulted in us buying 4 of their CDs!

We were lucky to catch the Caribbean food stall again before they closed and had a lovely plateful of the mutton curry and salad. Then back to Drayton again where folks were chilling and working up to another session. This last one was a bit more intimate, and plates of sandwiches came out to go with the drinks. They are so helpful and welcoming there, and the camping site is excellent. Many thanks to them for all they do!

We stayed on Sunday night and packed up in a leisurely fashion the next day. It was only a weekend, but weekend festivals always seem longer (in the nicest way) because the days are so full. With all the stuff we did do, there was a lot we missed - never got to the dancing with Wild Thyme Border Morris, or the tune sessions, and we never made it to the Town Hall at all. But that's festivals for you - always so much to do! Thank you Merek'n'Dary for another fantastic Banbury festival! Looking forward to the Song and Ale in April next year, and of course next year's festival!!

We had a bit of a change this year, instead of spending most of our time in singarounds as before, we tried out the music session in the Bell on Friday evening- and had such a wonderful time there we went back on Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime! More a mixed session, which is what I really enjoy, tunes and songs interspersed. If I had a local session like that my playing would improve no end.

We also had a Wild Thyme to start each day- we had a good few takers outside the Town Hall on Sat, including a couple of 'lary lads', but 11am on a Sunday wasn't a popular time to get new dancers... and a mis-communication over the start of the Parade meant that I was the only musician playing for Wild Thyme through the town and the shopping centre; a character building experience :)

Great weekend altogether, thanks Merek and Dary- and Hils for the mudgather xxx

Huge thanks to Merek'n'Dary and all the wonderful people who put so much time and effort into the weekend. Well Done!

We had quite a cosy Mudgather at the Banbury Cross pub on Saturday & several people brought chocolate *thanks* Quite a few people popped in, though I heard later that some couldn't find it in the program which is why they didn't come. It was amongst the 'around the town' events, but shown on the Friday page, which is probably why, ah well.
