I'm looking forward to seeing Sam and friends at the Hope Street Feast in Liverpool on Saturday 16 Sept - even though Sam's website suggests this is taking place in the United States.

all the odds are pretty good (ie long) for the Mercury Prize, I notice!

I'm tempted to place a tenner on Plan B. And maybe one on Sam, even though I don't think he'll win (which is no comment on the quality of his album)

Almost inevitably from the way he goes about things, Sam is a divisive character on the folk scene, but it saddens me to note the veiled sometimes anonymous sniping at him that has been going on for some time - and this appears to have been heightened already by this nomination.

A couple of years ago a did a double bill with him at Walthamstow Folk Club. Top bloke. No, I'm not suggesting I should have been nominated... he was on his way up and I was... continuing my horizontal trajectory!

Vic - you're right. Up here in Manchester we're divorced from the preocupations of the folk chattering classes (well, I am anyway!) so we're able to enjoy what Sam does without any other agendas coming in. I have noticed some sniping on Facebook, but took great pleasure in ignoring it. On the few ocassions I've had contact with him he seems like a very nice bloke.

I guess a performer who scores an appearance in Vogue is going to upset a few folkies here and there - although why having a good press agent or being uber-skilled at marketing himself should annoy people baffles me. Marketing an important part of being in the music business, and other performers could learn a lot from Sam Lee's progress.

Living here in New York, and being a bit out of the trad folk loop, I just heard Sam Lee for the first time last week as a supporting act to Patty Griffin. I thought he was fantastic. I don't really know the history of the "sniping", but it seems to me that all the marketing and business acumen in the world means nothing if you don't have the voice, talent, musicianship and charisma to back it up. Sam Lee has these in spades. He is doing well because he is damn good.

There are quite a lot of youngsters on the market in recent years trying to carve out a living using folk music. Good luck to them I say, as long as they respect the material and credit their sources. I've known Sam a while and used his expertise quite early on in his career and I can certainly vouch for his integrity, respect and knowledge. If he can muster a following, which he clearly can, then we should be positive about what he is achieving.
