Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 16 Sep 12 - 05:10 AM You may be able to use this free DAW (I have a copy on other PC but can't remember if you can import ad export midi - its a good programme - though it can't load external VSTis which makes it a bit limited) Studio 1 Free |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Sep 12 - 02:59 AM Here's another one from Ivan. See if this one works better for you, Morwen. It sure works better for me. Thanks, Ivan. Click to play (joeweb) |

Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: IvanB Date: 15 Sep 12 - 08:21 PM Bill, the only problem with using vanBasco's is that this file has about a five measure lead-in before the melody, which wouldn't be wanted when singing the later verses. vanBasco's is a great little program that doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but functions well for its primary purpose. That said, I usually edit my MIDI files to the exact length and repetitions that I want before using them in vanBasco's. I especially like being able to mute a channel, change tempo and transpose, all on the fly. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Sep 12 - 08:13 PM Here's what Ivan came up with. The melody seems suppressed, which is the same problem I had. Here's what Ivan says about it:

Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Bill D Date: 15 Sep 12 - 08:11 PM I missed this a few days ago. Van Basco's player will play midis and can be set to repeat the song. I don't see any way to set a precise number of repeats, but one can always hit 'stop'. freeware. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: IvanB Date: 15 Sep 12 - 08:00 PM Stim, technically I didn't edit the MIDI. What I did was open it in a NoteWorthy file and then edited the score. When I was satisfied with my edits, I exported it to a new MIDI file. One thing I like about NWC is that it gives me more editing functions for MIDI output than most other score editors I've used, including Finale. One of those I use often is the ability to set the velocity and panning for an individual staff. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 15 Sep 12 - 06:38 PM Morwen, do I remember correctly that you have access to the Sibelius software? It can import MIDI files and do the trick. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: GUEST,Stim Date: 15 Sep 12 - 05:18 PM Sorry, IvanB, I was not clear. I edited the MIDI in the MIDI editor, and when I had done the best I could with it, I converted it to an avi for listening purposes. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Sep 12 - 03:36 PM I tried editing this with Noteworthy Composer. I came up with a maze of six staffs, screwed up the balance of instrumentation, and more-or-less lost the melody line. Ivan, send your edit job to me, and I'll post it with Mudcat MIDIs. I have a special place for experimental stuff. Thanks. -Joe- joe@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: IvanB Date: 15 Sep 12 - 03:09 PM Stim, very true, but audio and video files aren't as easy to edit as midi's. Since the source file was midi already it was easy to open it in NWC and do the requisite cuts and pastes. After editing it can be made into whatever sort of sound file is desired. Luckily, it was a nice clean midi file so NWC didn't have quantizing problems on opening it. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: GUEST,Stim Date: 15 Sep 12 - 02:36 PM Audacity is not a midi editor/sequencer. If you go down the page, there are a couple of programs that say that the edit midi, those are the ones you want. IvanB; What I did was to create an audio file (an .avi) from the midi, and upload that to SoundCloud. The audio file is better because you can play it back on anything and it sounds the same. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: IvanB Date: 15 Sep 12 - 02:36 PM One more thing: this version has the "Guantanamera" line sung four times whereas it's usually sung twice. Do you want that corrected, at least during the body of the song? Probably at the end it'd be alright to do four. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: IvanB Date: 15 Sep 12 - 02:14 PM It's a piece of cake with NoteWorthy Composer. Just so I understand you correctly, do you want to start with the chorus, then verse/chorus five times? And would you like the melody line volume lowered or omitted entirely? And where would I send the finished file? PM me if you don't want to publish the email info in the main forum. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: MorwenEdhelwen1 Date: 15 Sep 12 - 04:43 AM I have Audacity. Just tried importing the MIDIs in but can't do anything with them. |

Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: GUEST,Stim Date: 14 Sep 12 - 09:55 AM I tried to do this for you but for some reason I am having a mapping problem with the midi file, and I don't have time to straighten it out. You should go here:http://freemusicsoftware.org/category/free-windows-audio-software/audio-sequencer-windows and find a midi editor and fool with it a bit. It's mostly cutting and pasting; actually, what you want to do is all cutting and pasting. if the melody seems dominant for you, you will be able to adjust the volume , but you can also change the voice to something less noticeable. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Sep 12 - 07:54 AM What I just tried: - copy the MIDI file to disk - drag it to iTunes or the QuickTime Player - tell iTunes to "Repeat One" or QuickTime Player to "Loop". The problem with that is there's an opening fanfare you don't want to have repeated in the middle of the song. Audacity can probably do what you want (I have it but but have hardly ever used it as I have almost no use for MIDIs). It's free. That particular file strikes me as rather unsuitable to sing along with, as the MIDI melody is very dominant. You surely want the backline to be the main thing you hear. |

Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Sep 12 - 07:00 AM Hmmmm. I wonder what we can find you for free. Noteworthy used to be free, but no longer. Have you tried Finale Notepad? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: MorwenEdhelwen1 Date: 14 Sep 12 - 01:57 AM Not really. |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Sep 12 - 01:26 AM Morwen, do you have a MIDI editor? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 13 Sep 12 - 11:22 PM Five repeats i.e. a colon with a thin vertical ...followed by fat vertical through the staff lines. What program are you using? Audacity, Musicmaker, Cakewalk etc??? Sincerely, Gargoyle There is still time to enroll in undergraduate studies to achieve your anthropology dream. |
Subject: Need help with making MIDI longer. From: MorwenEdhelwen1 Date: 13 Sep 12 - 10:12 PM I found a nice MIDI of Guantanamera this site: . Could anyone help me make it longer, so it has time for five verses? (BTW, I'll record this, Babalu, and Linstead Market consecutively.) --------------------------------------------------------- It was typed with a blank space and a period after HTM ............ mudelf |
