In many of Lord Invader's songs, he mentions going to Rockaway. He even wrote and recorded a song called "Down At Rockaway." What or where is Rockaway?

Don't Bother Matilda: She say we live in Brooklyn in winter, and go Rockaway in the summer." This song is about a man who has a brief fling with an American girl.

Rockaway is the barrier island to the south of Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. It used to be a major Summer resort location to et away from the city,

EBarnacle: Thanks. I bet Invader went there. That's why he wrote about it.

Incidentally, "Down At Rockaway" is also known as "Romancing With The Lord Invader."

Rockaway Beach seems to me, to be the beginning of Long Island. Just before you get to Rockaway Beach from New York, you drive through an airfield that the was the beginning of many early Transatlantic flights - I don't remember the name of the airfield. Then the main highway goes parallel to the seashore, and there are a good number of side streets one or two blocks long between the highway and the seashore. After you leave "civilization," you arrive at Fire Island National Seashore. When you see the wilderness of Fire Island, it's hard to believe that New York City is just a few miles away.
I walked through a beautiful dunes habitat to the Fire Island Lighthouse at sunset. I can't begin to describe how beautiful it was - and I think it was about a ten-minute drive from Rockaway Beach.

Wasn't there a plane crashed on Rockaway, not long after 9/11?

You have a very good memory, John. American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in neighboring Belle Harbor on November 12, 2001, killing all 260 people on board, and five on the ground.

There's lots of air traffic over Rockaway Beach, but it's still a wonderful area. I believe that Rockaway Beach is part of Queens, a borough in the City of New York - but it's sure a long way from Manhattan.

There are a lot of Trinidadians in Brooklyn, and many steel drum bands--in fact I think the Panorama Steel Band Competion happened just this last week--

The airport is Floyd Bennett Field and is not currently active as an airport. The Ryan Center at the airport is a major visitor site at the airport and, if you ask real pretty, you can get a walk through the hangars where there is a collection of historic aircraft, including a B-17. The area is also the HQ for Gateway National Park, which covers the entire area from the Statue of Liberty through Battery Park through Staten Island through parts of the Rockaways.

By the way, Joe, Long Island includes Brooklyn and Queens.

Yo comprendo, EBarnacle - but to me, you're not on Long Island until you reach Rockaway Beach. Brooklyn and Queens don't really feel like Long Island to me. Similarly, I don't feel I'm on Cape Cod until I can see water on both sides of the highway.

Rockaway Playland used to be open in the summer. Beach 116th Street was where all the moms and kids stayed. Lots of Irish bars in the 60s and 70s. Lots of cheap souvenir shops.

I've only ever known Rockaway from the song 'Rockaway Beach' by the Ramones who were from, initially, Forest Hills, Queens.
