Tom died April 1970 at age of 74 (76 on his coffin!)
he was a character of the West Riding and loved to entertain people much as we do in the pub sessions and folk club and festival singarounds!

he wrote many songs and used traditional material to augment some of his songs. His best know songs being Poverty Knock (s) and Young Simon John in particular.

Mick Haywood is probably the best source of Tommy songs and I have recorded Mick for the Yorkshire Garland website on

www.yorkshirefolksong.net

I am looking for any recordings of Tommy and songs attributable to him ~ I am aware of Pete Coe and Martin Carthy's Poverty Knock songs, thank you! I am looking for more obscure and little played examples of his songs, please?

Also sought is the possible whereabouts of Dr Roger Renwick. Roger was friend and singing pal of Bill Price I believe in Canada.

Bill wrote to Folk Review in 1975 saying that Roger had done an indepth study of Tom Daniel's songs and poems etc for his PhD at the University of Texas!!

Looks as though the University of Texas still has a department of Ethnomusicology (rare institutions in the UK nowadays!)

Anyone any links to University of Texas any likely contacts for theses in circa 1972 some 40years ago, looking for the source data!!

Ray,
He was at the Sheffield Uni conference in 1998. I remember because he came to listen to my paper on Fake songs. I have some of his books but nothing with Tommy Daniel in.

You could try emailing Univ Penn or I'm sure somebody on Ballad-List will have his contact details. Do you want me to ask?

I looked at this last night but wasn't sure it was who Ray wanted because the PhD was at UPenn not UT.

However, if it is, Contact page at UT has an email address.

Yes Mick and Steve

The UT was an original mistake based on a letter sent by Bill Price to Folk Review in 1975, which I have sent on to the folk mags for further research

Looks like Univ of Pennsylvania and it looks like he may be known to some of the UK folk researchers from my internet browsing!

yes Steve any contacts woulod be worthwhile I feel here!

Looks as though some papers were forwarded to Mr Bulmer too and some lost in a fire in 1935
Looking to put a full list of TD songs together and maybe some sung examples! in addition to what we have on YG data base

I have one or two on the case, all welcome though!
