I currently cannot locate the Ed Michel site on the internet.

The folk boom was happening, and Riverside, which is to say Bill Grauer, wanted lots of product.


THE HOMESTEADERS were a made-to-order group, designed to work in the studio. It was put together by arranger-guitarist WALTER RAIM. I don't remember everything, except that the singers were JUDY COLLINS (who was already starting her career, but hadn't reached star status yet), RONNIE GILBERT (from the Weavers), BOB HARTER (a phenomenal bass, who made his living in the jingle business -- he was the guy who said the low "That's right!" when somebody else said, "Winston's got the taste that's right", and a male tenor who I remember only as BILL. Walter wrote all the arrangements and played guitar (and probably some banjo, but I'm not sure). I used to have bad information here, as my memory was obviously awry, but Frank Hamilton and music writer   (sic) called my attention to some obvious errors, and Stuart Kremsky of Fantasy was kind enough to go digging through the old recording contracts to provide accurate data. In addition to Walter, FRANK HAMILTON (then in the "Pete Seeger chair" with the Weavers) played guitar and banjo, and CHUCK ISRAELS (then with the Bill Evans Trio) played bass. TITANIC, ABILENE, ROLL ON BUDDY, and SILKIE were recorded on September 18, 1962. On October 15, MARY ANN, RAILROAD BILL, and SHE'S LIKE THE SWALLOW were recorded, with MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Before he was Woody Allen's writing partner, when he was "the fastest mandolin strangler in New York City added. And WHOA BACK BUCK, STRANGER HERE, ROLL ON COLUMBIA, CAPE COD GIRLS and GREY GOOSE were recorded October 16, with FRED HELLERMAN (who'd been guitarist-singer with The Weavers since the beginning) in place of Brickman.


Everything was recorded at Plaza Studios, NYC, which was where all Riverside New York dates got done, and Ray Fowler, who was the Riverside engineer, did the engineering.

if you want a copy of the LP, keep an eye on the many
web sites which sell vinyl. Currently one on eBay $14,
but they often are offered for, and sell for much less.

Somebody *offering* it at a ridiculous price, is NOT what it
is worth. Such dealers are looking for those P.T.Barnum is misattributed as saying were born evey minute.

HCA015 Railroad Bill by The Homesteaders - 1962 ca. - Riverside RM 7537 (mono LP), RS 97537 (stereo LP)

The members of The Homesteaders are not identified on the record or the jacket, but the voice of Judy Collins is unmistakable, and the source for this, John Ross, indicates that Judy has confirmed being on it. The other members of the vocal group were Ronnie Gilbert (of the Weavers) and Mike Settle (plus one other male singer John can't identify--possibly Walter Raim--the arranger). Lorin Sklamberg kindly provided the correction that the other female singer was Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers and not Ethel Raim who John Ross had thought. Ethel Raim was apparently unfamiliar with this album when asked by Lorin.

Vocals by The Homesteaders, with instrumental accompaniment. Musical direction and arrangements: Walter Raim. The liner notes include a long quote from Bobby Darin.

I once heard someone suggest that the fourth voice (second male voice) was Lee Hays, but many folkies will be able to say if that is possible or not. I can't, having just one song to listen to.

Right now, I'm trying to develope an ear for all the voices in the Sons of the Pioneers.

I knew I heard that other woman before haha. I recognized Judy right away. Funny I didn't pick up on that being Ronnie's voice. I wonder if there is going to be a C.D release.

Bad news, but there is only one recording by that group, although the name Homesteaders has been used several times.

Judy Collins was under contract with Elektra by the time that LP was released (1962) and she is not credited, as far as I know.

Others voices are Ronnie Gilbert (female, Original Weaver) and Mike Settle (future New Christy Minstral and lifetime musical director for Glen Yarbrough).

Other male voice may be either Walter Raim or Ed Michel, the arrangers for the record.

All but two songs are credited "(Trad., arr Walter Raim & Ed Michel)". Unfortunately common practice from folkies who wanted a bigger piece of the royalty pie.

I have only one song by them on a collection record, but Judy Collins voice cannot be mistaken for anybody else's voice.

Does anyone remember there being a folk quartet by this name it popped into my head the other day, but I can't find anything about them. If anyone remembers could you give a bit of info. Thanks
