Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Haruo Date: 26 Oct 12 - 12:32 PM Sadly, no. "Making Music for Malcolm & Mike.... M4" doesn't bring up anything in the Facebook search bar, though it does yield a couple of Youtubes from the event, for which I am grateful. And the other link in the first post, to the South Riding Folk Arts Network, now takes one to a fresh obituary for a different Mike (Michael Marra)... Condolences to all. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: YorkshireYankee Date: 25 Oct 12 - 08:44 PM Hi Haruo & Steve, Sorry my link didn't work. I'm not a techie, nor am I on FaceBook myself (accessed M4 using my husband's account), so I don't know what else to suggest - aside from what Wyrd Sister said. Have you tried that yet? If so, did it work? |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Wyrd Sister Date: 24 Oct 12 - 04:26 PM Facebook: search for Making Music for Malcolm & Mike.... M4 (as stated in first post...) |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: GUEST Date: 24 Oct 12 - 11:04 AM Well done all so sorry we were prebooked to elsewhere. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Haruo Date: 24 Oct 12 - 10:34 AM Loud and long congratulations! I imagine Malcolm Douglas and the other departed are favorably impressed, too. But I'd still like to see the photos. What is the FB Event called (as opposed to an unsearchable long number)? |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Wyrd Sister Date: 24 Oct 12 - 06:28 AM Final word from the organisers: "Hi Everyone WE DID IT - A NEW RECORD FOR SHEFFIELD 221 musicians playing together for two sets of Dancers. We raised £984 which has been topped up by a generous supporter, to £1000 WHICH WILL BE SHARED BETWEEN MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT AND THE SHEFFIELD INTENSIVE HOME NURSING SERVICE. ... our heartfelt thanks to all who came along and made it a great afternoon. Special thanks to Kelham Island Museum, The Fat Cat, Clough - Ibbotson Hobgoblin Music, and Soar Valley Music and 'Thank Goodness It's Folk', Robin Garside, Trev Lea, and the Session Leaders All of whom supported us in one way or another. A film clip can be seen on Youtube http://youtu.be/R9Y5jt_Y220 thanks to Trev Lea for that. There will be pictures etc available shortly and there should be something in the Telegraph on Friday." (That's the Sheffield Telegraph, folks.) And I add my thanks to all, and especially Ron and Jenny Day, who organised the whole thing. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Haruo Date: 23 Oct 12 - 04:08 PM Unfortunately, YY, that FB link just takes me to my own Events list, which this never made it onto. When I try entering the number in the FB search field, I get the following absurdity: Track Packagewhich sounds like the Ceilidhs have been crossbred with the FedEx package tracker. |

And a couple of great videos which also viewable on YouTube: Making Music for Malcolm & Mike - THE dance Mortimers Morris @ Making Music for Malcolm & Mike BTW, I believe they also raised £1,000 for cancer research... Enjoy... |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: stevewise Date: 23 Oct 12 - 04:19 AM does anyone have a link to the facebook page please? google doesn't seem to be able to find it I was also there and had a great time - thanks to the organisers |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: maggi Date: 21 Oct 12 - 08:01 PM How lovely to be part of it all. Many thanks to the organisers and all the other attendees. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Wyrd Sister Date: 21 Oct 12 - 01:38 PM Thanks YY for beating me to an update, and to everyone who came along. (I never meant to imply Malcolm had really been forgotten - as has been pointed out, his name keeps coming up anyway. I was just concerned that there had been no further posts and the thread would disappear.) There was a moment to reflect on all the friends lost over the years as well as Malcolm and Mike. So live life to the full, folks, while we're still here. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: YorkshireYankee Date: 21 Oct 12 - 11:47 AM Mission Accomplished! A grand total of 221 musicians! - and two sets of eight dancers (IIRC)... plus a very cute pair of smallish dancers (a little boy & girl, aged 4-5 (my best guess)). A lovely afternoon with wonderful music - and wonderful people. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: YorkshireYankee Date: 21 Oct 12 - 09:07 AM Bump... Last chance... it's on NOW! |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: GUEST,Teg Date: 21 Oct 12 - 07:20 AM Just another quick bump for anybody who's in the area and fancies coming down. Hopefully see you there! |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: YorkshireYankee Date: 21 Oct 12 - 12:36 AM It's just a matter of hours, now (7 1/2 until the start)!. I've been to two of the previous ones (the first attempt was before I moved to Sheffield); see you (i.e. those lucky enough to be able to attend) there! |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Martin Harwood Date: 18 Oct 12 - 02:06 AM Steve. You should have no trouble parking either at the museum, on-street (free on Sunday) or in one of the car parks by the Kelham Island tavern round the corner. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Steve Gardham Date: 17 Oct 12 - 06:44 PM Hoping to be there. I came to the last one. Is there easy parking in vicinity? I can't remember. I don't fancy lugging boxes on the tram. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: GUEST,Teg Date: 17 Oct 12 - 06:15 AM Bump. I'll be there, hopefully in time to sing a few songs in the session before hand too (it would only seem appropriate really - I'll have to look out my copy of Marrowbones before the weekend). |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: DMcG Date: 16 Oct 12 - 07:48 AM Not forgotten at all; many of us are far from your location, you know. True; and add to that I am a singer not a session player. But I exchanged probably hundreds of messages with Malcolm over the relatively short time I knew him - though we never met. So as everyone else on this thread is saying, Malcolm is not forgotten by me. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Martin Harwood Date: 16 Oct 12 - 04:20 AM Cath and I will be there. Should be having a bit of a session as people arrive as well. |

Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Mo the caller Date: 26 Sep 12 - 09:41 AM And of course his contributions keep popping up when old threads are revived. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Trevor Thomas Date: 26 Sep 12 - 07:54 AM Malcolm was a personal friend who I knew from the mid 80s. I went to the last memorial event, and also to the funeral and to help scatter his ashes down in London. Mike Steel was also a friend. We all worked together organising the Sheffied Folk Festival a few years back. I'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: michaelr Date: 26 Sep 12 - 01:21 AM Greetings from California. I, too, have been most edified by Malcolm's expert knowledge which he so gently shared. Wish I could be there! |
Subject: RE: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session-21 Oct From: Bob Bolton Date: 26 Sep 12 - 12:27 AM G'day Wyrd Sister, "Have you all forgotten who Malcolm was, and the great stuff he posted here? ... Is no-one else coming along to celebrate that life, and those of others in the Great Session upstairs?" Certainly not forgotten by me ... his postings - and his erudite replies to the most arcane questions were a great strength of the Mudcat. Unfortunately I am half a world away - Sydney, Australia - but I wish you well in gathering an appropriate session to celbrate a life lived well ... if far too short! Rgards, Bob |

Subject: Malcolm Douglas Memorial Music Session From: Wyrd Sister Date: 23 Sep 12 - 06:40 AM On Sunday October 21st there will be a fourth and final attempt to create the world's biggest ceilidh band and to celebrate the lives of the late Malcolm Douglas and Mike Steel, another much-missed member of the folk community, with music and good company. This will be held at Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield S3 8RY, between 1-4pm, admission £4 (including an optional visit to this fascinating industrial museum), all proceeds to be shared between Macmillan Cancer Care and the Intensive Home Nursing Service. Real Ale Bar supplied by the Fat Cat, one of the pubs in the legendary Don Real Ale Valley. More details, including dots and midis for the three ceilidh tunes, can be found here or on Facebook (search for Making Music for Malcolm & Mike.... M4). See you there! |
