Subject: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Stower Date: 28 Sep 12 - 02:41 PM As YouTube update the technology on their site regularly, YouTube downloaders become obselete. Not only do the ones I've used no longer work, new ones I've downloaded don't either. So do 'catters have any recommendations for a YT downloader? Please only recommend ones that do not put those extra icons and programmes on my tool bar. The last one did that even though I ticked the box not to. The downloader didn't work and it took ages to work out how to remove the programmes (most likely spyware). Thank you. Stower |

Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Mark Clark Date: 28 Sep 12 - 03:07 PM Not every YouTube download is a copyright violation. Often someone you know puts up a video he or she made and invites you to download it to have your own copy. Other people put videos on YouTube hoping that people will download and share them. I use a couple of different programs for this purpose. The free one is from Real Networks and is called RealDownloader. The program watches your browser for downloadable videos and adds them to a window that lets you download the video with a single click. Simple, effective and free. The other product I use is called iTubeX and runs only on Mac OS X. There is a trial version but eventually you need to buy it. I can't remember the price. - Mark |

Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Stower Date: 28 Sep 12 - 04:27 PM Thank you, Mark. Whoa, GUEST,sturgeon! You're making a HUGE assumption there! I have no intention of breaking copyright. Making money from copyrighted music myself, I have no intention of breaking anyone else's copyright. I know how annoying it is when folks steal MY music! I am also an educationalist, and among the tripe on YT there is also a great deal of valuable educational material. Rather than go back later (sometimes months or years later) and find an excellent video has been taken down, I'd much rather save for my workshops and lessons. Nothing I save is infringing copyright. Any musical performances I put on YT, anyone is free to watch, listen and, if they wish, download. I expect some may do the latter. After all, I put them there. It would be nice if they also bought the albums. I didn't need to explain myself, of course. But I don't like false accusations or assumptions. No more than you do, probably. Stower |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Newport Boy Date: 28 Sep 12 - 04:47 PM I'll second the reccomendation of Firefox + Downloadhelper. When YouTube formats change, the author is quick to respond. Phil |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Arkie Date: 28 Sep 12 - 05:01 PM If you just want a sound download, MP3 Rocket works quite well and did not give me any extras. Open Rocket, open the youtube video, copy the url, paste into the appropriate place on Rocket and a couple of clicks, and the work is underway. Usually, downloads before the video finishes playing. The challenge is find where Rocket has put the file, (it might help to pay attention during the install) but once that is done, the downloads always go to the same place. |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Gibb Sahib Date: 28 Sep 12 - 06:40 PM Easiest it to just go to the website KEEPVID. You plug in the video's URL, and it makes a download link for you. They will also rip it as a plain sound file if you want, too. I use it a lot for downloading videos to show when teaching and I don't know if an Internet connect will work. |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Tangledwood Date: 28 Sep 12 - 06:51 PM aTube Catcher has been working well for me. As well as downloading from You Tube it can capture streaming video and convert to a large selection of formats. |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Acme Date: 29 Sep 12 - 01:13 AM I have Keep It! (http://www.keepvid.com/) on my browser toolbar. I haven't used it in a while, but it worked very well for me when I did use it and no ads turned up. SRS |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: Stower Date: 29 Sep 12 - 04:49 AM I have used the Realdownloader recommended by Mark Clark - thanks, Mark. (I was using a similar device but it stopped working.) GUEST and Newport Boy, thank you - I've also installed the Firefox Downloadhelper. Stower |
Subject: RE: Tech: YouTube downloader - pls recommend From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Sep 12 - 10:30 AM Probably not what's wanted here, but perhaps of interest to someone who might drop in, a recent newsletter shows: Downnload YouTube Videos to your iPad No recommendation, but it's a usually reliable source.
