The legacy of John Birmingham, a much loved regular at The Cumberland Arms in Byker, who died in 2005, was to establish The John Birmingham Cup, a competition for songwriters of unaccompanied songs in the folk tradition. Due to the popularity of the competition heats now take place at various festivals and events throughout the year, winners of which will then compete in the final at Whitby Folk Week in August.
The winner will receive a cash prize and a performance spot for their winning song at a Whitby Folk Week concert.
The JB Cup is not about the best singers; it's about songs that get the whole room going, whether that be in tears or in a rousing chorus.
The next heat of the John Birmingham Cup will be hosted by Folk 3D in conjunction with Derby Folk Festival, to be held upstairs at The Brewery Tap, 1 Derwent Street Derby DE1 2EN (very close to the Derby Assembly Rooms) on Sunday 7th October, at 4.30. For entry forms and information, please contact Folk3D@hotmail.co.uk
NB. A festival ticket is not required to enter or attend the competition, however - entrants will be asked for the usual £5 entry fee which goes towards the running costs of the competition, payable on the day.
