Great story about Big Jim, as told by himself in the UK's Guitarist magazine (I think). When he went to his first recording as a session man he was given the sheet music, which he couldn't read, and none of the other players had much sympathy for him. He said he went away and started with Beethoven and by Christmas he could read fly shit!

RIP Big Man.

Pete

Big Jim was quite caustic amusing on his episode of working with Van Morrison. Not frightened to speak his mind!

When I was a kid my dad encouraged me to respect session musicians
and regard them as role models
whose standards I should aspire too attain.

Big Jim was high on my list of names to check out on album sleeves.

Trying hard to remember if I ever owned any of his band Tiger's LPs ???

Jim's superb playing featured on many, many hit records by British artistes. He was a giant among guitarists, And he will be remembered and sadly missed.

RIP Jim. You were truly great.

I first heard of him with a record -on Decca of course- called A Hot Hiss Of Steam by The Big Jim Sulivan Combo with Little Jackie Atom. For years afterwards his name cropped up whenever exemplary session work and innovative playing are mentioned. He must have been overwhelmed to be a guest on the Bay City Rollers tv show.
A true pioneer in British music.
RIP Mr. Sullivan.

Hi

Oh so sorry to read this.

I saw Jim several times and was always impressed by him both as a person and as a great guitarist. Probably best known for backing Tom Jones on his early TV shows.

RIP Jim

My sympathies go out to family and friends.

MikeL2

A huge loss. I met him and was fortunate to hear him play in Buxton a few years ago. Here's a video of his composition "Blues For Norma".

he will be missed.
