I've just been crying with laughter at clips of the old Kenny Everett Show from BBC TV of many years ago. Just as funny as I remembered it - and the Rod Stewart take-off clip had me doubled up yet again.

More to come after the biopic hour and a half of Kenny which has just started - can't wait!

With apologies to US 'Catters who probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about - Kenny Everett was one of the most original and funny DJs and presenters of the '60s and '70s, and his TV shows were brilliant and original.

That biopic drama was one hell of a brilliant programme. It's repeated in the middle of the night if any Brit wants to record it - and I reckon you should. Superb.

He was another mentally ill comedian.

Missed this, I'm afraid, I loved him on Capital Radio in the 70s and I worked with him on a couple of occasions when I used him as a voice over on commercials. He'd leave his yellow Rolls parked outside the studio on a double yellow line with a full-size blow-up model of Camptain Kremmen in the driving seat, rush in, do the job in two takes, give you a couple of silly ones for fun and rush out again - all in about ten minutes. One of the funniest men I've ever come across.

A brilliant performer, one of my faves when I was at school. I saw the first one last night and I agree the Rod Stewart skit was as funny now as it was then.

Define mentally ill Richard, why it matters and why someone who suffers from a mental illness can't be a comedian (or any thing else they want to be).

"Camptain Kremmen "

Ooops! But, of course, it was always in the best possible taste.

Will,
This is the first time I've heard of Kenny Everett. Hilarious. We don't get much British comedy in Canada. This is great. I have watched 4 video's of him so far on you tube and you have made my day. Thanks,
Adrien

Did they show his spot at the Tory conference where he said they ought to kick Michael Foot's stick away?

Where would we be without upper-class comics keeping uppity cripples in their place?

Kenny certainly wasn't upper-class. He was a clever, original, wayward man who came from a very ordinary family, but often spoke without thinking - and sometime had cause to regret his words afterwards. Richard has dubbed him mentally ill, but there are thin lines between genius, eccentricity and instability. Spike Milligan was mentally ill and had no qualms about declaring himself so. Kenny Everett was certainly eccentric, but not mad. I met him and Spike M at various times and in various places in London (in my BBC days) and can affirm that they were very different characters. Spike could be bloody difficult at the best of times, whereas Kenny was more even tempered - if often outrageous.

I was there, in my previous life as a young conservative (too young to vote by a couple of years at that time). He also said something like "let's bomb the Russians!" which went down a treat with that audience.

Whether someone is mentally ill or otherwise is irrelevant.

I hope Bridge makes better observations as a legal bod than he does as a lay psychiatrist.

Using mental illness as a derogatory term is stooping a bit low isn't it Bridge? It isn't that the late great Kenny was a Tory, banker or any other member of society whom you feel below courtesy or respect.

On the lighter note, he was a hero. I was a volunteer on a hospital radio when he was at his prime and we all worshipped the sod.

Wonderful programme, (though it did miss out the 'Kenny and Cash' years on the pirates), but didn't it show up how second-rate his successors and imitators are!

I went to YouTube to see Kenny Everett; found a video of Everett and the "BeeGees."

Searched for videos of actual BeeGees for comparison, found a video of a BeeGee, a world-famous pop star, SINGING WHILE CUPPING HIS EAR WITH HIS HAND.

Was this MEANT? Discuss.

BeeGees always used a cupped hand in their early stuff. Same reason as other singers do, to be in control of their harmonies within the vocal mix.
Don't know if they continued during the disco days.
Quack!
GtD.

Thanks, Geoff. Let's remember this the next time somebody implies that cupping one's ear proves that one is an obsolete, untalented old dork.

On behalf of obsolete, untalented old dorks everywhere, I am deeply upset by the tone of the previous post.
