Subject: Swinton Festival - The End From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Oct 12 - 04:36 PM It is with mixed feelings I pass on the following news. Sad in a way because I have, in a greater or lesser in recent years extent, been involved with all of them. In another way we are proud to see it survived all the changing fates and everything that the council, the recession and everything else that was thrown at it :-) It is time to let it go. If any youngsters want to inject more enthusiasm they are welcome to have a go but for Ged, Dave and I, we have had a good run. Let's finish on a high note FESTIVAL NEWS: After much sole searching and discussions with Dave & Dave, Ged has decided that the 2012 Festival will be the last. All 30 festivals have been a gathering of old friends and new over the years - a shared experience to continue the tradition of enjoying many forms of Folk and Blues, bringing a great mix of musical appreciation. Ged, Dave and Dave with the welcome help of many of you still involved with Swinton and others are who are sadly no longer with us enabled Swinton Folk Festival to grow into a weekend of great main guests including all of the big names in the folk world, lively Ceildihs, Morris Teams and Craft Fair. After the council in their wisdom decided to close our venue in the Elizabethan Suite the festival continued on a smaller scale at the White Lion, home of the Swinton Folk Club and has continued to welcome folk and blues followers to share in the friendly sessions and concerts. You will, of course, know that it has not been an easy decision for Ged to make and he will continue with Swinton Folk Club every Monday. Hopefully everyone will do their best to support the festival this year to make it a great farewell. You will notice from the update below that Staff Folk are the supporting artists - this is their 40th Anniversary as a duo. Subject: RE: Swinton Festival - The End From: Bernard Date: 06 Oct 12 - 08:41 AM Oh yes, I remember 'Uncle Bernard' and the infamous clown suit... which split in a rather embarrassing place...!! Somewhere I think I still have a copy of the original poster from the first one, which was put together with 'Letraset' in the days before computer typesetting! I'm fairly sure I scanned it a few years ago, come to think of it. BINGO! I've found it! I've put it on the Lymm Folk Club web space, so you can get a copy here! |

Subject: RE: Swinton Festival - The End From: GUEST,JJ Date: 17 Oct 12 - 03:44 PM Any tickets left for Saturday night? JJ |
Subject: RE: Swinton Festival - The End From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Oct 12 - 12:04 PM I believe so JJ - Give Ged & Sue a ring. The number is on the first post. See you there all being well. It all starts tomorrow! Saturday afternoon should be lively. Man United are playing and the match will be shown in the vault while the afternoon singaround is on. Wonder who is noisiest :-) Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Festival - The End From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Oct 12 - 12:25 PM Blues concert upstairs tonight. Informal sing/play/gab-around in the folk club room. Just come back from a very muddy time on Anglezarke moor and feel I fully deserve a few pints. Along with good music and good company, what could be better :-) Come and join us! DtG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Festival - The End From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 Oct 12 - 07:15 AM Well, all over bar the shouting. Which will occur from 1pm today in the pub :-) Keith Donnely, who I had not seen before, was brilliant. Excelent singer and songwriter and absolutley wonderful raconteur. Had the audience in stitches at times. Good to see Ged and Dave together as Staff Folk for their 40th anniversary as well. We will almost certainly have a sing and play and some sort of folk club event around this time next year, but unless someone wants to take up the challenge, that is it for Swinton Folk Festival. As I said earlier, sad but it is time for us long in the tooth organisers to let our old friend go. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Festival - The End From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Oct 13 - 03:24 AM There is a current thread on how to make a comeback - I should read it to some ideas :-) Anyway, as I hoped, someone else has picked up the reins. I believe it is being run by Pete and Sarah but I do not have full details. What I do know is that there will be things going on at the White Lion on Saturday Oct 19. I am pretty sure the singaround is on all day as usual and that there is a concert in the evening featuring Tom Travis. If anyone else has any more details please feel free to post them. Cheers Dave |
