Well, I got the CD a few days ago and I think the entire production is quite good. Spound quality is just OK.

First, this is not a Blues record but a Memphis Soul outing.

Isaac Hayes, Carla Thomas (daughter of Rufus Thomas) and the Memphis Horns are a dead giveaway.

Lee Atwater is an OK singer, but I think his Fender guitar playing is more interesting than Steve Cropper, the center of the Memphis sound.

Most of the participants are performed at the inauguration party for George H. W. Bush in early 1989. Sam (of Sam and Dave) Moore is an active Republican and B. B. King a quiet one (as far as I know). Producer Mike Curb was Lt. Governor under Gerry "Governor Moonbeam" Brown when Curb was barely old enough to run. He vetoed several pieces of legislation when Brown was in Africa on vacation with Linda Ronstadt.

Nice to see Billy Preston ("The Fifth Beatle") and under-appeciated singer Maxine Brown included.

CD revenue seems to have been intended for several charities inluding chilhood food and education programs.

Good music, fun record. Recomended. Atwater was not a musical great, but the whole production is good clean fun.

Pixley and Petticoat Junction? Prehaps you are thinking about Edgar Buchanan.

Roy Buchanan was raised in Pixley, the famous Mosrite electric guitar factory (as with The Ventures) was in Oildale, and the boxcar Merl Haggard was raised in was in Pumpkin Center. All within about 50 miles of each other.

Roy Buchanan is usually said to be from Arkansas, but his parents moved the California's great Central Valley when he was quite young. I can't find the exact year, but it is safe to say Roy was a product of California.

Rose Maddox, Buck Owens, Merl Haggard, Steve Perry, Tom Johnston (founder of Doobie Brothers), Wanda Jackson and a few others come to mind. All from the farm country of the Central Valley, not the LA music scene.

Atlanta.Since he died in August 1988 it was July. One of the best shows I ever saw. Three piece band. I think John Lee's was better. But he had lots of help. Roy Rogers on slide guitar.
I don't think many come close to Roy Buchanon.

BTW, I never considered Danny Gatton a blues player... More a rocker...

There was a blind albino blues player I heard once when I was in my teens down in DC... I have tried for years to remember his name... He was a black guy... Well, let's say that he was African American 'cause he was real light skinned... Very small... Sat on the speaker of his amp and played electric guitar... One day when I least expect it his name will come back to me and I can Google him up... He played in the 50s and 60s...

Other than those folks the folks I knew were acoustic country blues players like the late John Jackson and the late John Cephas and the guy I used to call "Dad", the late (sniff) N.J. Warren, and the not so late folks like Eleanor Ellis, Phil Wiggins, Clarence "The Bluesman" Turner, Mike Baytop, David Jackson, Miles Spicer, all the ladies in "Sapphire", and folks in various blues bands I met at various festivals where I and my friends at Archie Edwards Blues Foundation would conduct blues workshops...

I heard Danny Gatton once... Didn't care for his music though he was a heck of a guitar player... Seemed to lack melody... Over played... Sad ending... Especially since when he shot himself he had been booked to do a big (for him) gig in Texas that would have more than likely pushed him out of the "best unknown guitar player" status...

Never met or heard Roy Buchanon live... I was living in Richmond then and when I moved back to the DC area (Jefferson Co. West Virginia) in '85 it took me several years to get back to playing out... By then, he had also died... But I was well aware of him thru musician friends who turned me onto him in the late 60s or early 70s...

Atwater is not much different than Ted Nugent in his approach.
There is a line between Mark Hanna (under McKinley), Lee Atwater and Karl Rove.
Bringing Atwater's name into this discussion blurs the distinction between
musical topics and the B.S. format.

He is definitely not a seasoned blues man although he has the pretense
in his embarrassing performances with Nixon.

True story, however, about Johnny... Last time I saw him was about 3 years ago at Sweet Caroline's in Winchester, Va. and, well, I guess to someone with a few too many beers might think that I was Johnny... So after the concert I was out front just mingling and this guy came up and wanted my autograph...

"Hey, man, I'm not Johnny..."

Then the guy starts cussing at me for not giving him my autograph so I told him to come on over and I signed his Johnny photo "Sidewalk Bob"... Reckon he woke up the next day and looked at the signature and was wondering why Johnny would sign it "Sidewalk Bob"???
