I need the words to two songs, one familiar and one, obscure. The better known one is Hashana Haba'a (Next Year).
The lesser known is Etz Tapuach (The Apple Tree). Can anyone help me? B'vakasha.

I have a few folk friends in Israel. How soon you need them? And in Hebrew or English?

The second song has come up on Mudcat before with no success. I'll see what I can do with e-mails. May take a few days, but we'll get an answer one way or other.

OK. hang on a day or two. I just e-mailed a friend who has his fingers in the folk world over there and he checks his e-mail every two or so days.

Subject: ADD: BASHANA HABA'A
From: Charlie Baum
Date: 05 Oct 12 - 11:03 AM

http://www.ahbjewishcenter.org/shabbat046.htm has the Bashana Haba'a lyrics in English and Hebrew, including untransliterated Hebrew.

From a different source:

BASHANA HABA'A

Israel

Bashana haba'a.
Neshev al hamirpeset
venispor tziporim nodedot.
Yeladim, bekhoufsha,
yesakhakhu tofeset
Beyn habayit, oulebeyn hasadot.

Chorus:
Od tire, od tire,
Kama tov yihye,
Bashana, bashana haba'a

Anavim adumim,
Yavshilu ad ha'erev
Veyugshu tzonenim lashulkhan.
Verukhot redumim,
Yis'u el em haderekh
Itonim yeshanim ve'anan.

Chorus

Bashana haba'a.
Nifros kapot yadayim,
Yul ha'or hanigar halavan.

Anafa levana,
Tifros ba'or knafayim
Vehashemesh tizrakh betokhan.

Chorus

Next year
We'll sit on the porch
And count migrating birds.
Children on vacation
Play catch
Between the house and fields.

Chorus:
You will yet see, you will yet see
How good it will be
Next year.

Red grapes
Will ripen till the evening
And will be served chilled to the table,
And languid winds
Will carry to the crossroads
Old newspapers and a cloud.

Chorus

Next year
We will spread out our hands
Towards the radiant light.

A white heron,
Like a light, will spread her wings
And within them the sun will rise.

Chorus

I just struck out with Israel, so far. My buddy's never heard of it. I have written to a folklorist who is up on songs in Yiddish, Hebrew and English. I'm waiting to hear back.

Also, musicmick, are you sure of the spelling of Etz Tapuach?

Subject: ADD: TAPU'ACH CHINANI NAD ILAN
From: maeve
Date: 05 Oct 12 - 04:06 PM

Here are the lyrics and English translation found at the above link from GUEST at 02:32. There is also a sound file at that link; what a pretty melody!

TAPU'ACH CHINANI NAD ILAN

Nad ilan
nad ilan
tz'marto litef haru'ach
venashak alav.

Sham bagan
sham bagan
yafati katfah tapu'ach
utz'chokah shenhav.

Lu ani ilan hi ru'ach
venashkah af li
od tik'tof oti tapu'ach
chinani.

Ho matai hayom yafu'ach
ve'esa koli
yafati redi lashu'ach
begani.

A GRACEFUL APPLE
A TREE SWAYS

A tree sways
a tree sways
the wind caresses its top
and kissed it

There in the garden
there in the garden
my beauty picked an apple
and her laughter as ivory

If only I were a tree and she the wind
and she were to kiss me
she just might pick me up
a graceful apple

Oh when will the day be over
and I shall call aloud
my beauty! come down for a stroll
in my garden.

My thanks to Mark (in Israel) and John on the Sunset Coast who both sent me lyrics to The Apple Tree song. I'm glad things worked out, Mike. Best wishes,

BM
