A fine tribute to someone who I'm extremely glad to have known.

Here's a memory of O'Hanlon which I'm sure won't come amiss.

The first time I met Gerry, he told me that he had a soft spot for Liverpudlians after something which had happened to him there many years earlier. He and a friend of his were travelling back to Northern Ireland from London, where I think he said they'd been studying. They arrived at Liverpool's pier head early in the morning, skint, hungry, and with several hours to wait for the Belfast boat.

Able only to raise the price of a couple of cups of coffee, they went into a cafe and sat there making the coffee last as long as it possibly could.

Eventually a big, blond, blousy waitress came over, said "You look like a couple of lads who could use a decent feed", and slapped two enormous breakfasts on the table in front of them. Free, gratis and for nowt.

No wonder Gerry thought ordinary people were worth fighting for.

Private removal from Dublin on Monday, 8th October. There will be a wake in the family home at 6 Glendesha Road, Mullaghbawn, BT35 9XN from Tuesday, 9th October, leaving the house at 12 noon on Thursday, 11th October, for a humanist ceremony at Aras an Phobail, Mullaghbawn followed by interment in the local cemetery. Family flowers only please, but donations, if desired, to the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association.

Perhaps not entirely unexpected, but a shock nonetheless. Gerry was a welcoming host and a good friend of folk music on both sides of the Irish sea.
My condolences to Rita and the family.

Removal from his home on Thursday to the Community Centre Mullaghbawn to arrive at 12.30pm to celebrate his life with a humanist ceremony. Burial after in the local cemetery.

Oh God! Gerry was someone for whom I had an awful lot of time, and I had no idea that he had been ill. So the news has come like a bolt from the blue.

He was a very solid character, extremely warm and welcoming, and a damned good socialist with a very strong humane conscience. And I have some wonderful memories of those South Armagh singing weekends.

Spare a thought for Rita and the rest of the family.

So sorry to have to report the death of a great friend of An Góilín Traditional Singers Club, Gerry O'Hanlon of Mullaghbawn. One of the great movers and shakers of traditional singing and one of the organisers of The Sliabh Gullion singing festival. It seems somehow appropriate that he left is on the very weekend on which the singing weekend used to take place. A man with a huge social conscience and someone who knew exactly what was what in regard to traditional song. There's a great singing session going on somewhere with his old buddies, Frank Harte, Tom Munnelly, Geordie Hanna, Joe Holmes, Eddie Butcher, Paddy Tunney, etc!
