Subject: RE: Over The Hill ; 65 on October 1st From: Rusty Dobro Date: 10 Oct 12 - 05:13 AM I'm heading for that landmark on October 18th, having been born on Chuck Berry's 21st birthday (or the day he was released from his first prison sentence, if you'd rather.) I'll be spending it in Sicily - did Sorrento, Pompeii, the Vesuvius climb, etc, a couple of years ago, otherwise they'd be on the bucket list. Had a trip on a traditional sailing barge last week: this was one of my two remaining ambitions. As the other one requires the enthusiastic participation of Jennifer Aniston, it may possibly never happen. Here's a song from the recently departed Kent singer/songwriter Monty Parkin to suit the occasion, to a tune only slightly reminiscent of 'Sweet Little Sixteen': They're really rocking in Clacton, In geriatric hotels, On the prom in Southwold, Way down to Tunbridge Wells. As they cling to their Zimmers, Their sense of rhythm survives, The rock and roll generation, The over 65's. The over 65's They love to do the frug, As they bop in their bathchairs, They wear a tartan rug. In the middle of the dance-floor, They shake their wigs and spin, 'Cos if they ever stop moving, Rigor mortis sets in. CH: Oh doctor, doctor, Please may I go? I've had my hip operation, And my blood pressures low. Oh sister, sister, I've still got all my drives, And I want to rock and roll with The over 65's. The over 65's, They haven't given up yet. All the girls look groovy, Dressed in flannelette, With an inch or two of make-up, They still retain their looks, As they dance in a circle, Around their pension books. CH: They'll be rockin' in Frinton, In retirement mews, In out-patient clinics, And Post Office queues. All over the country, They'll disrupt whist drives, 'Cos they've never quite grown up, The over 65's. (Substitute the names of your own elderly enclaves at will). |

Subject: RE: Over The Hill ; 65 on October 1st From: dick greenhaus Date: 09 Oct 12 - 11:20 AM I have led a good life, full of peace and quiet I shall have an old age, full of rum and riot. I have been a good boy, wed to work and study I shall be an old man, ribald coarse and bloody. I have never slit throats, even when I yearned to. Never sang dirty songs that my fancy turned to. I have been a nice boy, and done what was expected I shall die and old bum, loved but unrespected. Collected from Lemuel F. Parton Recorded by Carl Sandburg @moral @aging filename[ GOODBOY |
Subject: RE: Over The Hill ; 65 on October 1st From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 09 Oct 12 - 11:08 AM Hell, let's make it a music thread. How many of you (like me) toddled around the kitchen singing "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64." when you were actually 64? Now that you are older, has the song lost its charm? Do you sigh and say, "Ah, to be 64 again" ? Have you ever been to the Isle of Wight? I know it only from the crossword puzzle. |

Subject: RE: Over The Hill ; 65 on October 1st From: Stewie Date: 07 Oct 12 - 07:42 PM OVER THE HILL It's not the grey hair that makes a man old Nor the faraway look in his eye I am told But if the heart makes a contract the body can't fulfil You're over the hill, brother, you're over the hill If you look at a Venus and just heave a sigh If you hear a rude joke and you laugh till you cry If it's all in the mind and you can't raise a thrill You're over the hill, brother, you're over the hill You can fool your dear wife with the tenderest of lies You can shear the old sheep, pull the wool over her eyes But if she asks for an encore and you say that you're ill You're over the hill, brother, you're over the hill Now life is a struggle and the conflict is keen There are just so many shots in the old magazine When you've fired the last shot and you cannot refill You're over the hill, brother, you're over the hill Now this is my story, alas and alack When you've squeezed out the toothpaste you can't put it back So if you want to make whoopee don't wait until You're over the hill, brother, you're over the hill [Bill Williams Changi prison camp, Singapore, 1940s]. --Stewie. |
