TB BLUES

My good gal's trying to make a fool out of me
Ah, my gal's trying to make a fool out of me
Tryin' to make believe I ain't got that old TB

I have got the tee, ee, bee, ee, blue-a-hoo-hoos

When it rained down sorrow, it rained all over me
When it rained down sorrow, it rained all over me
'Cos my body rattles like a train on that old SP

I have got the …

I have got that old TB, I can't eat a bite
Got that old TB, I can't eat a bite
Got me worried so I can't even sleep at night

I have got the …

I've been fightin' like a lion, looks like I going to lose
I'm fighting like a lion, looks like I going to lose
'Cos there ain't nobody ever whipped the TB blues

I have got the …

Gee, but the graveyard is a lonesome place
Lord, that old graveyard is a lonesome place
They put you on your back, throw that mud down in your face

I have got the …

Author: Jimmie Rodgers. Recorded San Antonio Texas 31 January 1931 Vi 23535
Source: Jimmie Rodgers 'America's Blue Yodeler 1930-31' Rounder CD 1060

A classic and poignant blues by Rodgers who died of TB in 1933. Greil Marcus, in one of his more lucid and moving passages, perhaps said it best: 'Jimmie Rodgers was every boy who ran away from home, hanging out in the railroad yards, bumming around with black minstrels, pushing out the limits of his life. He celebrated long tall mamas that rubbed his back and licked his neck just to cure the cough that killed him; he bragged about gunplay on Beale Street; he sang real blues, played jazz with Louis Armstrong, and though there was melancholy in his soul, his smile was a good one. He sounded like a man who could make a home for himself anywhere. There's so much room in this country, he seemed to be saying, so many things to do - how could an honest man be satisfied to live within the frontiers he was born to?
