Lets take it that Bert Jansch, Manitas de plata, Django Rheinhardt - every time they picked up a guitar - they must have felt like Formula One drivers getting into a Ferrari, or the works Maclaren (whatever that means!).

Personally, I feel like someone who'd like to try for the advanced motoring test, but I don't think I'll ever be ready.

My current model is a left hand drive convertable. Left handers can be bought fairly cheaply second hand sometimes . I got a friend to convert mine to handle like a right handed model , which it does quite nicely . It gives me a bit of trouble in low but I don't fret too much about it too much

Fingerpicking, nothing too fancy. Always play in EADGBE.
Little red Nissan, tootle about the neighborhood, prefer back streets.

I guess it fits, doesn't it?

I have been accused of playing too loud
so has the muffler on my 4X4 pick up

(i think it comes from playing rhythm guitar
in a band for contra dances out numbered by banjo,
piano, fiddle, mandolin, and sometimes flute.)

I prefer back roads and mountain roads...as well
as old timey songs...they don't make 'em like they
used to..

I have a bit of a heavy hand...and foot.

I grew up on street roads. My first love was a 1965 GTO. I love songs with a driving beat that aren't over the edge into frantic. Now I'm playing bluegrass professionally. My picking style is decidedly basic with some frills, more along the lines of Maybelle Carter. It's all about the beat.

I just bought a decommissioned Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, that I adore. Built hell for tough, fast and snappy, gonna leave it in the black and gold cop paint.

And I detect no discernible pattern about these things, but it's a good question to ponder.

Typo correction. I grew up on street RODS. These tiny keyboards on these wireless things really fubar my typing skills.

And no, fubar is not a typo. It's a technical term.

"What sort of guitarist/motorist are you?"

Sometimes I play fast and sometimes I don't
Sometimes I will, and sometimes I don't
Sometimes I do and sometime's I don't
I wonder what happened to won't

Believe it or not, I texted that to Mudcat while driving at 127 mph on a highway near Montreal.

Would you believe 103 mph?

Maclaren F1.

(Made from carbon fibre.)

Sadly, thats about as far as the analogy goes. The only carbon fibre in my car is a fake dashboard strip of the stuff. (better than the fake wood trim they offered to be fair...)

On a serious note, whilst a tail happy sports car will make you improve your driving skills (or be familiar with the workings of ditches) then my guitar does help, as the clear sound makes every single bloody mistake audible....

Some people have said that my guitar -playing is good .

I don't drive ,despite being a fork-lift truck driver and qualified

( CPC National Freight ) Transport Manager .However ,I get transported

about the country by my partner , Nicola ; a superb driver. Her Dad

used to own and race a 1908 12 litre "Itala" which sold recently for

1.75 million ! ( no, she didn't get the money ) .Yesterday , I turned

out for a Morris side ( drumming ) and was driven to Hailles Abbey in

an MG Midget ; marvellous , if somewhat chilly !

Since being bitten hard by the hammered dulcimer bug a couple of years back, my guitars have basically become a big multicar garage full of good dependable vehicles of various sorts, none of which get driven often enough to keep the batteries charged. When I do take one out for a spin, it's so hard to get the seat adjusted comfortably that I'll drive it around the block a time or two and then park it back in the garage.

As for my hammered dulcimer playing, it's a bit like driving one of those Toyotas they recalled a few years back due to unexpected acceleration problems.

Both well lived in, as is my musical style.

I should have said:

Car, a venerable Rover 75!

Comfortable, reliable, but can shift when necessary.
Used to being passed by boy racers of variable skills,

Guitar, a rare, in fact very rare and venerable vintage Framus Nashville acoustic, which plays very well. I wish I played as well.
Used to being passed by guitar players of almost any skill.

Me, a venerable folkie, not at all rare, but creaking suspension is a problem, so I rarely pass anything moving, in fact I can't usually pass a pub, especially one with music.

Don T.
