Subject: Thought for the Day (Oct 28)
From: Peter T.
Date: 27 Oct 99 - 09:44 AM

Though I have yet to hit 50, I am losing my memory. Oh, my long term memory is fine -- I have a head full of junk -- but I am rapidly losing grip on 20 minutes from now. I am now forced to leave important papers, books, objects that I must have soon deliberately in my way, so that I have to stumble over them to get out of my house, office, and for all I know, toilet stall. It doesn't help that I have 200 students, all buzzing around, and 3 research projects, and an encyclopaedia to edit. Shortly, I will have to start tying long pieces of string to my mittens again. I thought of turning this to advantage, and putting dismal memories I would like to forget by the door for tomorrow, and forget them that way. But no dice. They hang on like burrs. Meanwhile, where are my damn slides for my 10 o'clock class?????????
yours, Peter T.

greetings Peter

You ca always do what some of my proffessors did - sit in from of the class and chat about your memories. Maybe I'm weird, but I'v always enjoyed learning the knowledge that people gained throughout their lives - that book stuff and looking at pictures can get boring.

By the way, what do you teach?

Pete, I may have mentioned it before on a thread (see it's happening to me as well!) but I have a notice above my desk which says:Each day I learn one new thing, the trouble is I forget two others".
I'm the "oldest inhabitant" in my office and expected to remember what happened 10-20 years ago! I find it impossible to remember names, and Pete, don't you find professors are getting younger?

Pete-- Even as I write this, I am stealing time from creating the Summer and Fall term schedules, and I have a set of graduate papers which demand my attention before I get the final touch on tomorrow's class. At the same time, the guitar and banjo leaning against one corner of my desk remind me that I have two solo shows coming up in a week or so, and I have yet to give any attention to what I'm going to do. I can remember a time when I could handle all this, but now I'm beginning to feel like the mythological hoopo bird. If you think your in trouble now, picture yourself in ten years: that's where I am!

The real problem is not senility. It is that we are all just so damned brilliant! Our minds are unable to concentrate upon some things - especially the mundane things like, where we left our glasses - because of all the amazingly clever things our minds are contemplating at the time.

It is said that we should, and usually do, learn from our experiences - both good and bad. So in order for our wonderfully smart thoughts to form, we must be able to draw upon those memories at any given time. Thus the good memories and the unpleasant ones are forever with us.

I had more to say about all of this but I just can't remember what it was...

I once answered the phone at work and forgot the name of the company....?? I put my hand over the phone and frantically asked the secretary "who are we"... I now have a label on my desk with the name of the company written out in full. Mind you it is a bit of a mouthful - "The Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Technology Network Ltd" There are so many bits of info floating round in my head that some of them are bound to sink.

kindest regards

I find I can still remember faces - trouble is I can't match names to them. It's a bad trait for a salesman! I've been in my industry for twenty years, during which time I've had contact with (I guess) thousands of people. What I hate now is exhibitions and trade shows 'cos you can guarantee someone will come onto our stand (or booth for you people across the pond). It's obvious they know me and I know I know them, but I haven't the foggiest idea who they are! I have to resort to dropping my pen in order to try and get a closer look at their ID badge, and you can guarantee it's hidden under their jacket lapel.....

For example, I'm on the couch and a thought occurs to me that I need something from another room. In the time it takes to get there, I have forgotten what I came there for. Or I'm preparing supper and I need an ingredient from the fridge. Four steps across the floor and I'm staring stupidly into the refrigerator, the door open, letting all the cold air out as I wonder what it was that I needed. This happens more and more often. I am probably a prime candidate for Old Timer's disease....someday I will look in the mirror and wonder who's staring back at me, looking so dumbfounded. On the other hand, I think it was Lao Tsu who said, "A good traveller never knows where he is going. A perfect traveller never knows where he's been." Now, where was I...

Neil-- Yeah, that's really the pits. In the middle of a project, I dash to the hardware store for something I need, and then I'm reduced to wandering around the store, hoping that I shall remember what I came for when I see it. After fifteen years or so of this, the clerks have learned to stand aside and let me wander.

LMAO--

It's so reassuring to read that others are experiencing this phenomenon...I have experienced all of the above and more besides. I'm 42, and I have to put things in specific places every time I use them, or I don't find them again for ages. I own 4 watches, because I can only do without for so long before I go buy a new one, only to find the one(s) I lost about a month later. All I can say about this is that it takes me longer to lose four watches than to lose one.

I have come to the conclusion now that I can only keep track of x number of items, So now when I find something I mislaid, I immediately experience a sinking sensation of dread as I contemplate what item I must have just mislaid, and hope it's not more important than what I've just found.

FWIW

LMAO, Art!

In some sort of cosmic synergy, while I was posting how our brains are like computers, we lost power and I lost the whole posting. Now, I have to do it FROM MEMORY! Aaarrggghhhh!!

I am center-aged at 46. I make a dialy list to help me remember important things that needs to be done or taken care of. I've always done this. I think as we get older, we juts have so much more in our brains to remember. Our brains are like computers, they take in everything we see, hear, say and read, without discrimination; they take it all literally. So, sometimes we, may have memory overload and a little downtime while the system reboots.

My dad at 82, remembers tons of songs, literally hundreds if not thousands. He cna quote conversations verbatim he had with his dad as a kid and reams of the classics, poetry and prose. He always keeps up on the latestnews and politics, so keeps his mind agile. I think hehas learned to somehow filter what is important to him to remember, somehow leaving the rest by the door as Peter wishes to do. Maybe that is a secret only revealed wihtmore age?*g*

Scientists just discoverd that the brain can regenerate itself, create new cells, so we may all be able to "create" our own new motherboards, someday, if we can remember how!

I was reading in the paper yesterday that they were experimenting with genetically engineered pigs, and transplanting their brain cells to treat Altzheimer's.

So we'll all be singing "The Old Sow Song" soon.

Of course they won't be giving ol' 'Spaw a transplant, 'cos they wouldn't be able to differentiate between the original and the transplanted cells.

Of course it hard to change the channels with a prologue. I remember all the words and chords and stuff when I play, sober or 3 pints into it. Most people will answer to "Hey, how 'ya been". They know their names right?

Neil. I know just what you mean when you forget what you've gone into another room or the refrigerator for. It happens to me, and my partner, as well. I'm 55 and she's 50... I also can't remember words to songs when I try to think ahead as I'm singing, but somehow I seem to get the right words when I reach that critical moment.

Often I'll be searching for a part?? special?? moder/? must??? Oh.. a specific word to describe something, and it just eludes me. We now laughingly refer to those times as 'senior moments.' "I just had a senior moment".. Reassuring to realize that we're not alone, judging from the number of similar experiences.

Now what was I doing before I got.......

After I turned 42, I spent the next five months believing I was 43. I'm not sure I didn't go through the year before thinking I was 42 - I don't remember.

Somebody around here, who's probably too busy to post, once said to a friend (in complete seriousness) "I have to buy some Ginko, but I can't remember why."

Lao Tsu was a very insightful person Neil. Trying to teach others to live in the present moment.

We are constantly being told 'don't dwell in the past' and 'do not worry about the future'

When we are younger, we need to data bank information. It is part of our earlier stages of growth. But as we grow older, we do not need to accumulate or remember so much information. In fact, it can hinder our growth. We will gain more knowledge and insight from a clear mind; one that isn't cluttered with activity.
So, I think all you guys are on the right track!

Those wonderful malaprop moments. I usually refer to gapped memory as Neural Net Failure, at least I think I do. Part of depression for me was standing in a room holding something and wondering what I was doing with it. So much that I would normally not think about twice disappeared as fast as words written on water. Now I'm getting better but I often have to ask the kids where I put my glasses.

Before it was just the first lines of songs that were my problem. If I got those right I was off to the races and generally got through the longest ballad with no mistakes---even ones I'd not sung recently. So I made a large notebook with the first lines to ALL thew songs I sang. Now, though, recent memory problems are a part of the infirmity I'm saddled with---or so my neurologist at Mayo tells me. Says it ain't Alz..i..rs---positively. (Don't wanna print out that word. Too heinous.) With that assurance from a fine doc, I'm able to feel lots better.

People, people, people! This memory thing is why little sticky post-it notes were invented!! I am known for them - all over my desk at work, the frig at home, the front door, my car, hanging out of my purse. . . .I also have a pad of them and a pen in my car, in my pruse, in the nitestand by the bed, on the kitchen counter, at work, by the phone. You name it I've got a sicky note near by just waiting to help me remember what to do next. The only draw back - I haven't yet figured out how to keep them ready in the shower for notes and still make them stick.

On the serious side, my fuzzy mindedness was a thyroid problem. My doc (naturopath) tested my blood and found a number of levels that were off. I was borderline anemic (sic) among other things. His priscribed treatments, herbs and vitimins, have helped tremendously. Don't ignore that side of it.

Being blessed with a very good memory I often find myself on the edge of trouble. Arguing constantly about arcane points and who said what to whom. I also find myself witout anyone to play trivial pursuit with. I once lost a friend over who the first 7 Dr. Whos where. Even threw in Peter Cushing as the Dr. from an early film.

Constant note taking and post-its would drive me nuts. Too much equipment is needed. Pens, pencils, additional paper. Then it all has to be stored somewhere. I can imagine The Muse driving down the highway leaving a trail of yellow squares behind her as the wiper pushes them off her windshield.
