Subject: Johnny Cash 'The Mystery Of Number 5' From: GUEST,Paul Hazell Date: 18 Oct 12 - 04:35 PM Can someone please clarify something for me. I am sure that in the later years of his career Johnny Cash made a recording of Jimmie Rodgers' "The Mystery Of Number 5" with just his guitar - maybe amongst the Jack Rubin "American" recordings but although I thought I had it, I can't find it any where! Can someone please clarify which CD it was on? |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash 'The Mystery Of Number 5' From: Beer Date: 19 Oct 12 - 10:37 PM Mr Cash did it all and was respected by many. Little Jack Horton does a fabulous job on Tom Russell's c/d "Hot Walker". he mentions Mr Cash as an American icon. Can't find the full length audio of the number. Damn. It is great. Ad. |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash 'The Mystery Of Number 5' From: kendall Date: 20 Oct 12 - 09:47 AM I first heard Hank Snow do the Mystery of number 5, but Johnnie did it as well. I recorded Old Shep for Folk Legacy too. |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash 'The Mystery Of Number 5' From: GUEST,Paul Hazell Date: 22 Oct 12 - 01:46 AM Apologies for my silence - I have been travelling on business and did not have easy access. Many thanks for the suggestion of the Children's album. I didn't know that version existed. Interestingly I have followed up on the link and it is a different recording to the one I had. When I looked up the album on Amazon and eBay - it is available but the track is not listed on the LP or the CD - it is only on that one link. Perhaps it is a different CD reissue! The one I was searching for was different again - I think it was one of the Jack Rubin "American" recordings done at jack's home. However I have almost all of those and can't find it - so many thanks for the help so far but the mystery remains! The song was originally recorded around 80 years ago by Jimmie Rodgers, "The Singing Brakeman" and has been recorded by many others since. Wilf carter recorded one of my favourite versions. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash 'The Mystery Of Number 5' From: GUEST,999 Date: 22 Oct 12 - 02:20 AM Hi, Paul. I'm coming up empty. However, on occasion Mr Google differentiates between the number and the word, so try the song also as 'The Mystery of Number Five'. |
