The Headless Horseman

In 1950 Disney adapted Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow into a cartoon of the same name. Bing Crosby was hired on to sing several songs from the soundtrack, one of which was named The Headless Horseman. Here are the lyrics to that timeless song written by Don Rage and Gene De Paul.

When the spooks have a midnight Jamboree
They break it up with fiendish glee
Ghosts are bad, but the one that's cursed
It's the Headless Horseman, he's the worst

That's right, he's a fright, on Halloween night

But when he goes a-joggin' 'cross the land
Holdin' his noggin in his hand
Demons take one look and groan
And hit the road for parts unknown

Beware, take care, he rides alone

And there's no spook, like a spook who's sporned
They don't like him, and he's really burned
He swears to the longest day he's dead
He'll show them that he can get a head

They say he's tired of his flamin' top
He's got a yen to make a swap
So he rides one night each year
To find a head in the hollow here

Now he likes them little, he likes them big
Part in the middle, or a wig
Black or white or even red
The Headless Horseman needs a head

With a hip-hip and a clippity-clop
He's out lookin' for a top to chop
So don't stop to figure out a plan
You can't reason with a headless man

Now if you doubt this tale is so
I met that spook just a year ago
No, I didn't stop for a second look
For once you cross that bridge, my brook friends

The ghost is through, his power ends

So when you're riding home tonight
Make for the bridge with all your might
He'll be down in the hollow there
He needs your head, look out, beware

With a hip-hip and a clippity-clop
He's out looking for a head to swap
So don't try to figure out a plan
You can't reason with a headless man

I'm a big fan of the Kay Starr version

Here's what I play for the intro/verse (capo up to 5th fret to do it in D like the recording)

       Am    Bdim7             Am/C Dm
Now gather 'round while I elucidate

       Am/E       Dm/Bb    Am Bdim7 Am/C E7 (last 4 chords are the turnaround)
'bout what goes on when it   get's      late

the last line "in the night" holds on a CMaj7#5 and a walking bass

the Chorus is something like this
                Am                E7          Am    E7
When the spooks have a midnight Jamboree
Am                            Dm       E7
They break it up with fiendish glee
Bdim7                           Am
Ghosts are bad, but the one that's cursed
          E7                                          Am
It's the Headless Horseman, he's the worst

and then

C7
With a hip-hip hop and a clippity-clop
                                  F7         G7
He's out looking for a head to swap
C7
So don't stop to figure out a plan
                                                 E7
You can't reason with a headless man

and back to the intro/verse pattern

I heard this on Spotify. As usual, I have boldfaced the words that are different from those that have been posted above. Also note that some verses posted above are omitted from this version.

THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN
As sung by Bing Crosby on the various-artists album "Halloween Horror Show" (2013)

SPOKEN: Now gather 'round while I elucidate
On what happens outside when it gets late.
'Long about midnight, the ghosts and banshees
Get together for their nightly jamborees.
There's ghosts with horns and saucer eyes,
And some with fangs about this size,
Some short and fat, some tall and thin;
Some don't even bother to wear their skin.
Oh ho! I'm tellin' you, brother, it's a frightful sight
To see what goes on in the night.

SUNG: When the spooks have a midnight jamboree,
They break it up with fiendish glee.
Ghosts are bad, but the one that's cursed
Is the headless horseman; he's the worst.

When he goes a-joggin' 'cross the land,
Holdin' a noggin in his hand,
Demons take one look and groan
And hit the road for parts unknown.

And there's no wraith like a spook who's spurned.
They don't like him, and he's really burned.
He swears to the longest day he's dead
He'll show them that he can get ahead.

So close all the windows; lock the doors.
Unless you're careful, he'll get yours.
Don't think he'll hesitate a bit,
'Cause he'll clip your top if it'll fit.

And he likes 'em little, likes 'em big,
Part in the middle, or a wig,
Black or white or even red.
The headless horseman needs a head.

With a hip-hip and a clippity-clop,
He's out lookin' for a top to chop,
So don't stop to figure out a plan.
You can't reason with a headless man.

So after dark, you kids be good.
Stay at home the way that you should,
'Cause right outside and waitin' there
Is the headless horseman. Beware!
