There's a free audio stream of all of Iris Dement's new album "Sing the Delta" at the New Yorker's web site, probably for a very short time.

Sorry Iris, but I won't be dashing out to buy this one. Relentlessly downbeat, tracks too samey, and you sound real nasal on most of them too.
I have two of your earlier CD's, and I love them, and On both of them I found songs I wanted to learn, but all that's on this CD is songs I want to forget.
Quite a let down for me, as I've been a long time fan. :(

I'm having trouble warming up to this album, too. But I like track 9, Mornin' Glory. Some of the tracks are too rock-orchestrated. I still listen to her first two albums, and I liked both of them the first time I heard them.

She was great in the three concerts I went to, with just her voice and guitar, and in the singing she did on Tom Russell's "The Man From God Knows Where."

Her Grammy Museum interview is a real treat.

The spelling of her name is DeMent, no offense to anyone.

Indeed it is, thanks for the link. She's so natural, and she has a great, and dry, sense of humour.

Well, I enjoyed this so much I think I'm going to buy it. Certainly a different Iris, a rather personal and wonderfully simple album. One to sit quietly at night with a warming glass of something favourite and contemlplate to. Thanks for the link

Like what I have heard so far. Read some great reviews. Some did say that it grows on you. Only reason I don't have a copy is to keep peace in the family. My wife insisted I put it on the Christmas list. Now I am headed for the link Tony posted.

Have to say I'm disappointed in this.

Where's that wonderful warm sound she had with the string band--including Jay Unger, Molly Mason etc as I recall, backing her up for songs like "Let the Mystery Be"?   I like piano--heck, i play it on 19th century parlor tunes for instance-- but this seems somewhat cold. Couldn't she afford any studio musicians?   Maybe the Net has killed sales for her--but what you can get on YouTube free is much superior to this. And you can see her smile, too.

I wish she and John would do another duet album--now that was just delightful.

The thing that bothers me on this album is the drum set. I'm trying to listen to some sweet melodic singing with thoughtful lyrics, and someone keeps hitting a snare drum with a hardwood stick. It's as annoying as a barking dog.

Not to disparage drum sets in general. I think they're fine with rhythm & blues and similar types of dance music, as long as I'm on the dance floor.

Three different items on Iris and her new album on NPR (there are links for listening to individual songs at each of the links, as well as to the on-air segments):

'Singing Is Praying' For Iris DeMent - interview on Weekend Edition Sunday, Oct. 28
... it's been 16 years since the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter put out an album of original songs. Now, her full-throttled voice is back.

DeMent's new album is called Sing the Delta — a reference to the Arkansas Delta, where her family is based. She recently spoke to NPR's Rachel Martin about her Pentecostal upbringing, her mother's death and what convinced her it was time to return to the studio.

Iris DeMent's Emotionally Complex 'Sing The Delta' - review by Ken Tucker on Fresh Air, Oct. 10. His conclusion:
DeMent co-produced Sing the Delta with Bo Ramsey and Richard Bennett, and their arrangements emphasize DeMent's voice and piano-playing first and foremost in the mix. In "Makin' My Way Back Home," you can hear nice, subtle touches of pedal-steel guitar and some soft drumming. I will confess that the first time I played the album through, it seemed pretty and a little slight to me. I now realize it's because I'm so used to big emotional statements framed by big emotional music, and Iris DeMent's music represents the opposite of that. The songs on Sing the Delta only grow more rich, more emotionally complex, the more you hear them. And I plan to keep listening to these songs for a long time.
