THIS WILL INCLUDE Mudcat home....Max will see $#&&%%* weather

3 different weather systems coming together at NJ, NY, etc.... lasting for maybe 3 days.

We are in Wash DC area, and today, Friday, setting up for a craft show on the other side of the I-495 beltway. Packing and getting home Sunday nite should be 'interesting'.

Preparation is a good idea. I was checking a few things down at my mother's farm, making sure there was back-up propane for the generator, that the barn doors were closed and locked, things like that. Need to remind her to recharge her cellular phone and give us a practice call.

Down at the village marina they were busily hauling in the boats and storing them in the big sheds.

We really don't have much to worry about here in Richmond, 20 miles inland up the Kennebec River, except for the campaign signs. Best pick them up on Monday, check!

Current forecast has the eye of the storm heading pretty much straight for us - and then on to Max. What he'll have to deal with is the combination of the hurricane, or what's left of it, and the winter storm coming in from the west. The worst of the storm will be for those of us north of the eye.

This storm pretty much terrifies me - last year I spent all night during Irene with a flashlight in one hand and a mop in the other, trying to keep the water out of the finished part of the basement. With the exception of one small area, I succeeded too, but damn, it was a long night. Now we have larger gutters and a sump pump, but it's electric, so....

Should have gotten a generator!

Last year Hurricane Irene also put about an inch of water in my congregation's religious education wing, and the "remnants" of Lee put two feet. So we're all pretty nervous around here.

And of course, we remember what Irene did to Magpie and Kim and Reggie Harris's bridge - I sure hope they'll be okay.

The problem with weaker storms is that they're also slower storms, which means they dump a whole lot more rain. The storm everyone's comparing this to is Hurricane Agnes. Now, I was born during Hurricane Agnes - perhaps the very definition of a calamitous event.

I hope so, too. Last year I was without power for about 24 hours but know others who were without it for almost a week. For those who use wells (which I did until about 12 years ago), that meant no water (water for this purpose stored by filling bathtubs was soon exhausted), and for those who have certain landline phones provided by cable TV companies, that meant no phone service. The local Y to which I belong let nonmembers come in for showers, use their own laptops, and recharge cellphones. My phone worked even when the power was out.

Sandy, head out to sea. Don't disrupt life here or elsewhere.

As a native Floridian and survivor of a number of hurricanes, I can offer you folks in Sandy's path a few bits of advice:

Don't waste your time and money buying lots of Spam and sardines. You'll never eat them. If you get hit that hard, FEMA and the National Guard will provide you with MREs. They are much better than Spam and sardines.

If you own a chainsaw and you decide to evacuate, take the saw with you. Otherwise, any tree that falls will seek out the toolshed where your chainsaw is stored and crush both the shed and the saw just for spite.

If you have an Aunt Clara who lives in Lexington, Kentucky, this would be a great time for a visit.

If you're going to ride the storm out, stock up on Tums.

Lady Hillary and I left Fort Lauderdale this AM after a business meeting and are on our way back to NJ. At present, we are halfway home and enjoying the night in an economy motel in South Carolina. Tomorrow should see us rolling into Lady Hillary's mom's about 9 PM, just before the storm hits. We had intermittent bands of wind and rain through Florida but from the Georgia border have seen clear sailing.

Oops. My post was messed up (by me, obviously). Essentially, I expect a non-event HERE but the media is generating fear unduly at this point in time, given the projections of both US and CAN weather services.

I hope Sandy doesn't cause too much damage but it's gonna be touch and go as far as NY and maybe even further if Sandy picks up moisture in the Great Lakes area.

Irene left 15 inches in our basement after the power went out. I am getting everything up and well off floor. Okay, significantly off the floor and plastic bins need to be two feet off the floor as well, I do not want to find them tipped, wet and floating this time.

The yard furniture is all stashed in the garage and there is food we like if the power goes out. I have the internet hot spot and antenna. Last time we had power but no internet or FIOS for 3 weeks.

I keep reminding myself that it is easier to clean when it is dry and organized than when it is soggy and floating..

I am not amused.

I should have replaced the basement storm/screen door and the trim, but the inner door is solid and once the snow packs up around it, everything will be closed off until spring. I think the most likely thing that might happen would be my shed crashing. That needs to be replaced anyway.

• As for the power going off, it does that quite a bit here. I don't have that much to lose in the fridge & freezer and it will keep cold for a few days as long as I don't open it.
  
• It's too mild for pipes to freeze.
  
• I have a fireplace and some wood.
  
• I need to get potable water and a bucket or two full of water for flushing toilets because that's usually one of the most annoying things.
  
• Full tank of gas in the car. To escape somewhere civilized, and drive to McD's for coffee...and food.
  
• Charged phone, but I have an old-fashioned land line too.
  

I also need to go buy extra batteries and toilet paper, because that's what one does. Then, I can sit home with my fire, flashlights and probably candles or an oil lamp and my laptop, and post away... or more likely, just watch the the Weather Channel on TV.

I just went to the Chinese Tire website and see they have a new power box at many times the price I paid for the 5, yes, FIVE, I have. I can run a light in Mum's living room for days... I can run her TV for days... I can run my PC and connect to NP Power and find out the power outage status. I can charge a cell phone... I can...

Some change in predictions in a new report about 3 hours ago, but changes in what I've seen are worse instead of better. The whole report is too long to post here, but it, and others similar, need to be watched by people anywhere close to the danger areas.

Forecaster: Get ready for life-threatening Hurricane Sandy

'People in the high impact zone from Virginia to Southern New England have one day left to make preparations'

The prediction in this report is for as long as 5 or 6 days of bad weather, and suggests power outages that may take two weeks to be restored when the storm gets done, in some areas. The site linked has both video clips and text, so take your pick.

It does look as if this system is something you shouldn't ignore, so please do try to keep up with latest predictions and find safe places appropriately.

(Macho ain't healthy, with these kinds of risks.)

Jeri lives up the road from us and I think has the same power company. We lose power if a butterfly slams into a pole, so we're used to it.

It's not going to be cold (this time), but we CAN use the woodstove (and we have plenty of firewood) and can also cook reasonably well on it. If we have no power, we lose the pump for the well, so we always have extra water on hand. (Back in the days when the pipes would freeze, we learned how much the cats hate seltzer.) We have a composting toilet so we don't have to worry about that. We keep chargable flashlights charged and have batteries for everything else. Car charger for the cell phone (which we can't use around the house or neighborhood cuz we're in a dead zone, but if we're going to McDonald's for coffee anyway...). Our landline is through Comcast so no power, no phone. I can afford a break from the computer...

If we don't have power on Wednesday, Jeri can still come to dinner which will be heated up on the woodstove and served by candlelight. Booze will be served and music will probably happen.

I'm a survivor of the 1978 storms on the southern Maine coast. A local inn washed out to sea. I lived temporarily on an island. And all the nail pounders in the state lived comfortably off the work for a year. Oh, and snow shut down everything inland for a couple days.

We were snowed in for about four days in April of 1982. Thanks to ice storms and wind storms and snowstorms and tornadoes, we've been without power for up to six days.

We try to always be prepared...but we're certainly not worried. But we're not going to do anything stupid either. Glad I no longer have to deal with bosses who want me to drive in unsafe weather.

Waal, Lady Hillary and I got to her Mom's this evenin'. All is peaceful, some wind on the way up. Still no rain in owah path.

On the way up Lady Hillary was talking with a bunch of othah Hams [kc2hla if yer one, general license, usually working 2 meter band] and there was commentary about how many gensets were headed up fer people who shouldda got 'em long ago. The hatches are battened down and the hand grips are in place. No vehicles near trees or fragile structures.

Gnu, that power box sounds wonderful. I never knew such a thing existed. My ex was an electrician and very handy, and even he never got a generator for our house in a rural area where we could be without power for days, so I've never looked into a generator. But the power box sounds like something I could use--although it may be too late to charge it for this storm.

One thing I will do is turn the setting on my hot water heater to it's highest. If we lose power, I will have water but the water heater won't heat any new water as I use the water already in it.

I absolutely loathe the sound of generators up and down the road when we're powerless. It's as if we're just not allowed silence in our world (or neighborhood). And why, exactly, do generators have to be even louder than power lawnmowers?

I'm wary of generators anyway -- People I've worked with at Sears and who SELL generators and have an electrical background don't have a generator themselves and warned me away from them because of various hazards. I just don't trust them.

I can get along without power for a few days if necessary.

Go to a auto parts store (or Walmart) and buy an inverter. They come in various sizes, plug into your car's power outlet (formerly known as the light socket), and can provide AC power to run your fridge or freezer for a bit, then switch to charging you cell phone, etc. All off your car's engine (suggestion: go fill the tank with gas NOW).

Just don't run the car in a closed garage or similar place...carbon monoxide poisoning ain't fun at all, as I know.

Get votive candles [for nightlights in the toilet] and boil eggs. Eat all the ice cream and frozen yogurt or it will mel and change texture when it refreezes. Precook durable foods then stick it in the fridge or freezer after it cools down.

Everything in my basement that can be ruined has been. I just need to rent a dumpster for a while. The basement doesn't flood anyway, it seeps. Heavy rain doesn't usually get in, but days of constant rain and ground soakage does it.

I went to the store and got batteries for flashlights. When I was at the cash register, I remembered I hadn't grabbed any water, then I realized I have seltzer bottles in the recycling and tap water. Duh.

If my house isn't going to freeze, the worst thing about power outages is boredom. The thing is, it's not freezing, I have food, water, batteries, a full charge on my phone and computer, and a full tank of gas in my car. That means the power probably won't be off for that long. I'm not even gonna suggest it won't go out at all.

Sometimes it's lovely not to have power. I can read and not feel guilty about doing all the house cleaning type stuff that requires electricity.

As long as I've got enough batteries/charged flashlights to read by, I'm fine. Maybe even a guilt-free nap. If it's nice out, I can do some yard work until the noise of the generators drive me back inside.

I'm not even gonna suggest it won't go out at all. We're with the Co-op, Jeri. If you exhale too energetically the power will go out. (Or if a butterfly slams into a pole.)

Rail and bus transportation are now shut down throughout New York State. It's uncertain when they will resume.

Those inverters are great tools, Rap.

If burning votive candles for light, make sure they are parked in - not on - appropriate containers - preferably down in a tempered glass container with no flame above the top and something heat resistant underneath the container - to be completely safe. It's easy to forget to snuff the candle out when you leave the room. A foolish acquaintance recently had significant fire damage in a bathroom. The votive was on a non-heatproof plate, the countertop laminate melted and the particle board underneath ignited.

I much prefer kerosene lamps to candles. A bit safer. I understand that for long power outages battery power has to be conserved so candles or kerosene are useful - just please, be careful.

What worries me, though, is how this storm may affect Schenectady, New York. Given the fact that Schenectady is the cultural heart of the western world and is in the storm's path, I think it's a matter of grave concern. If Schenectady goes down, we all go down!

I started this thread, then we went and did a 2 day craft show and made a few $$$. The show ended at 4PM... the drizzle started a 4:30. We drove all the way around the DC Beltway in light rain... but got home & unloaded.
Spent the next 2 hours stacking things UP where water 'might' get in. It has twice, but this is the first time I ever got ahead of the game. Rugs in the downstairs are my main concern, as it takes days to dry them IF we get sun. I think I got as far as easily possible.
Also cleared off an old gas stove in an awkward place in my workshop... but haven't lit the pilot yet.....at least we could cook (and make coffee & tea!)if we had several days without power.

My son works at a surplus store & says he MUST go to work tomorrow.....but they already sold everything possible for emergencies! I hope they call him and say "never mind".

So.... we shall see, hmmm? Highest rain & wind are predicted for 10AM to 2 PM tomorrow (Mon.).... but lasting off & on for 24 hrs or more.

Drift warning:
On the way home, we went by way of the Washington to Baltimore parkway. Came around a curve and there was the Washington monument. Unless you are elevated, like on a highway or hill, you cannot really appreciate how much taller it is than everything around it. It is IMPRESSIVE in its size and simplicity.

Spoke with my brother last night... He lives in a "beach box" in Kill Devil Hills, NC... Said the house was movin' a little... Beach boxes don't have 1st floors... They have 2nd and 3rd floors and have a series of posts upon which they are built... They are 'sposed to move a little in storms and they do... No, not like the posts move but the box above them sways in the wind...

Not sure I'd like that feeling but he's okay with it...

What worries me, though, is how this storm may affect Schenectady, New York. Given the fact that Schenectady is the cultural heart of the western world and is in the storm's path, I think it's a matter of grave concern.

Bobert, blizzard warning has now been issued from the Maryland border all along the Allegheny Highlands in West Virginia, down into extreme southwest Virginia to the Kentucky border.

I'm not sure I have ever seen a blizzard warning anywhere in West Virginia. The leaves are still on the trees. Heavy wet snow and high winds in that rough country - gonna be some folks stranded for a good long time.

We had a freak tunder & lightnin' snow back in Jefferson Co, Wes Ginny around '94 or so and the leaves were still on the trees... You could hear the tops of trees snappin' off... It killed electrical service to our mountain community for the next week... I was lucky enough to have a generator wired into my electrical panel which ran 24/7...

It was freaky... I am really concerned about folks in Wes Ginny and the western Va. mountains with those leaves on the trees...

This could be a real slobber knocker...

When that front blew all across the midwest into the east this summer there were many places in West Virginia, even in the Kanawha Valley, that were without power (and with wells, that means no water) for over a month because the big power lines were accessible only by heliocoptor due to the dirt access roads being blocked by downed trees.

Mom's near Charleston, and out of harm's way from this. That is a relief. Annie is hunkered down on the Eastern Shore, mostly concerned about the possibility of trees coming down on the house once the soil is saturated.

I had to smile. She didn't like the way her chain saw was running, and rather than take a chance since there is no time to take it in for a tune-up, went out and bought a new one today. I had passed on BWL's advice yesterday, and asked her if she had it with her in the house. "No, but I did bring the big spud bar inside in case I have to pry a tree out of the way to get to the garage." Wacky girl.

Be as safe as you can, all you 'Catter's in harm's way. If or when you lose power we aren't going to be hearing from you. Those with smart phones and a means to keep them charged, check in occasionally if you reasonably can and have the time, and know that many of the rest of us are holding you close in our thoughts.

Tinker? Have you everything up off the basement floor?

Brought 12 bales of hay from farm to dam up the apron on the driveway since it overflowed with Irene and dumped all the water
into the basement.

Brought in the few things I have on the deck of my condo unit. Then I got ready to go to my son's family's house for dinner. As soon as I stepped out of my front door I realized what I hadn't brought inside . . . the doormat! After dinner at my son's house (where I suggested he might want to bring in the wind chimes near the front door--which he did) I filled up my car's gas tank, then brought in the doormat. I took my shower and decided to postpone raising the water heater's temp until before I go to bed. Before I go to bed I will also drain my smart phone's battery, then plug it in to recharge. I do have the kind of landline that works when the power goes out, so I should be okay even if the power goes out for a few days. I don't rely on batteries. I have a wind-up flashlight and a wind-up radio.

And now I wait . . . and try not to hold my breath.

My wife's with her mother in a retirement community in Silver Spring. The community will bring in four truck-mounted generators tomorrow morning so those folks on oxygen or need electricity for other medical things will have it. My wife bought six days worth of food, some water, and is charging her US and European cell phones, just in case. She's not overly worried, they brought in the patio furniture as per the community instructions.

I hope she can stay in touch; I assume that the DC area would be a high priority for communications repair.

I saw a post warning folks that freezers are more efficient when filled, so put extra bottles of water in to retain the cold...also freeze some that you can put in the fridge to keep it cold. (incase of power outage) another message suggested to fill your clothes washer (and dishwasher as well) with ice to keep your beer cold! (not sure how well this works, as they may not drain out the melted ice so well if not able to use the electric pump to empty it) Also don't forget that cordless phones require power, so keep an old plug-in phone on hand to use if power goes out. good luck to all and stay safe!

We're just expecting gale winds here in Maine tonight, with about 3 inches of rain. I've just made the round of hauling in all our campaign signs. We should be able to replant them Wednesday.

We did a test of my mother's emergency cell phone yesterday, asking her to give us a call, and evidently it's not working properly. She's got one of those Jitterbug phones that senior citizens are supposed to be able to operate. We discovered from the Jitterbug website that the company had changed the procedures for calling out, now requiring a "1" before the other ten numbers. So all the numbers we had implanted in her phone no longer worked; we were able to resubmit the numbers via the internet. But the damn phone is still not working. It is properly charged. I just talked to her on her land-line and the bugger is still not working. DRAT!!!

Okay I have one last round of pick up in the basement.the heavy work is done. We are 12 miles inland, and looking at 4-6 inches of rain over the next few days now. the real danger is on the shore and the wind.

The wind is gusting 40-50 miles an hour already and there is an amazing satellite image showing the storm circling from Raleigh to Nova Scotia.

Our big issue is the fact the furnace's automatic water feed started to malfunction last night and is overfilling the furnace so I had to turn it off. As fast as I drain it it refills. No sense in getting it fixed ,even if I could get someone, here until I know if the furnace is going to be flooded and destroyed. ( No, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to disconnect the auto feed)

There should be a shut-off valve somewhere for that feed. Might still be useful to try to contact your usual furnace service professional.

All the shut offs have been clearly labeled and that box does not have it's own. In fact the furnace water cut off is separate and doesn't effect the box ... clearly an issue to be addressed at a later date. this furnace is six inches off the ground, but Irene put it almost a foot under water. It only needed a new starter after that, but a second submerge could kill it all together. The house temp is staying pretty stable, and we will probably loss power in the next 24 hours.

If the floor is dry and the power is on I will call tomorrow.

Charlie -- I know that Jitterbug phones don't work in New Hampshire at all -- they don't have a network here. There's a map in their ads in the AARP magazine that shows where they don't offer service. I'm not sure about Maine...

That may be the problem.

Tom's got a TracFone. We're in a dead space here at the house, so have to go to Rte 4 or Lee Circle to use it. (Actually can get a signal up at Demmon's stor.) Even with Tom's limited eyesight, he can use it.

Just googled their website (http://www.greatcall.com/CheckCoverage/) has white (no service) close to your location. At best it's on the cusp.

Wind is starting to really kick up now -- we're about 25 miles from the coast (New Hampshire). Our only concern is downed trees or large branches. I think all the white pines up at the head of the driveway have gone in other storms and I really wish the dead branch of the oak would come down. The tree is at the head of our driveway but it's on our down-the-hill-neighbors' land. We've not had any real problem in 35 or so years, but we ARE in the middle of the woods. Just over the crest of a hill, much higher elevation than coastal NH.

The hill is why we don't have non-existant cell service, even from upstairs or at the head of the driveway or even up the hill -- and why before cable we only got 3 TV stations. (But we don't watch TV anyway.) Not a problem -- can usually get service if we drive up to Rte. 152. Heading the other way, we usually end up down at McDonald's at the Circle or the parking lot at Market Basket.

Last night I went to bed thinking I was as prepared as I could be. This morning after listening to the news I decided that I probably should heed the advice to pack an emergency evacuation "go" bag, so I did. It's only the second time I've done that since I moved to this condo in late '99. The first time I did it was when sirens (or something) woke me in the middle of the night, I turned on the news, and heard that The Station Night Club a few blocks away was burning. I thought I might have to evacuate, but there was no wind so the fire didn't spread. That was the fire that killed 100 people.

So far I guess Mudcatters are okay--or unable to tell us if they are not. Stay okay, okay?

Heard someone reporting from Long Beach Island, NJ and it instantly brought things into focus... My parents were close friends with a family who owned a house on Long Beach Island, NJ... Surf City to be accurate...

Well, I spent a good portion of two summer there after my junior and senior years in high school living "at the shore" in that house... I have fond memories of George's Pizza and the Miniature Gold course and clamming for cash in Barniket (sp) Bay every afternoon...

Oh, and the best part were the chicks... Every week a new batch would come to Long Beach Island... They'd come in on Sunday and be gone the following Saturday... All of us boys who were there for the entire summer were like these beach gods... Life wwas good for us...

Hearing and seeing the pics conjurers up a bunch of memories of much better times then tonight on Long Beach Island, NJ...

Remember Ron Jons Surf Shop at the cause-way??? I don't think I was into pictures back then... I was real skinny back then... No, like 6 foot and 120 pounds... Looked okay in a wet suit... We wore wet suits clamming... Sold clams to Kotrell for 1.6 cents a piece... On a good day you'd jump 600 clams up yer leg with clamming boots and make 25 bucks for 3 1/2 hours work...

We'd run the entire island at the way up to the lighthouse... It was real desolate back then... You could drive all the way from Surf City to the lighthouse and not see another car...

sister Annie is doing ok in Salisbury MD. not quite 6 inches of rain so far. Winds have been averaging about 30 mph for awhile with gusts up to 55. NOAA predicted sustained winds of 44-45 with gusts to 70 and that hasn't happened so far where she is. She think it is now unlikely. A few more hours and the wind will begin to slowly ease, though not the rain. So far her property has not flooded and she hasn't heard anything really loud hit the house. One of her band mates an hour north in Delaware has lost power. Ocean City is flooded from storm surge. Apparently the coast has or will flood from Norfolk north, on up into lower New England. Deal and Tangier Islands are flooded in the Bay.

She shared a pretty neat website www.windalert.com. (She's a wind and kite surfer.) Click on the US East Coast, then start zooming in on your region of interest. The arrows are wind meters. Hover over for the location for name. Click for a detailed graph. Real time wind readings and detailed graphs as you figure out how to navigate the site.

But as the news and weather folks have been saying, it ain't the wind - it's the water.

watching on CNN most of the night here in the UK. Hoping my two sisters in laws beach houses are safe in Wildwood. My brother in law in Cinnamincin drove upstate yesterday to get a generator to pump out his daughters basement, he is 75! Was gone most of the day, when he came home his wife made him some soup and told him to rest up, when she came back from the kitchen he had snuck out again! Men!! Stay home Ronnie!

Only a couple of flickering of the lights here in Silver Spring, MD. It's VERY wet here, but we are all ok. There were many 'incidents' with trees down & flooding in spots, but the major parts of the storm sorta curled around us.

Feeling very sad for those who got it worse.

On Morningside Heights, just south of Columbia University in Manhattan, we didn't even lose power. But in some places in this area, it's about as bad as it gets.

Hope it's not that way for any of you, who may be getting much more rain than hit us. The sister of a friend in Charleston, WV, has two feet of snow.

The New Jersey shore has been wiped out as surely as if it had been carpet bombed. Storm surge obliterated Atlantic City and drove rail cars onto the NJ Turnpike near Newark.

Lower Manhattan was flooded by three feet of water at the Battery -- that's where the Staten Island and Statue of Liberty Ferries are -- extending northward at least through the uptown border of Battery Park and sending 11.5 feet of salt water into the entrance of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, which looked like a waterslide.

Manhattan lost almost all power below 42nd St., river to river. Our friends who live a block from the Hudson could see it coming up 41st St. and expected to lose power imminently, but did not.

The Lincoln Tunnel remained open through it all, but the bridges were shut down, as were the Queens-Midtown and Holland Tunnels, after they began to flood. The bridges reopened at noon.

Buses will start running soon, free on limited routes, but no one knows when the subways will reopen. Five days, maybe? On a normal day, they pump out around 15 million gallons of water from the subway tunnels. But the pumps were never made for this. The subway tunnels under the East River have four feet of salt water in them, and that's corrosive.

For the City of New York, this is an unprecedented disaster. Deaths, thank heaven, are currently very low. But five million people use subways, buses and trains to come to work here every day, and almost none of these are running.

Remember that tree roots can loosen within the waterlogged soil, damaged trees and limbs can shake loose, flooding continues...even in mildly affected areas like ours in Maine. Please use extra care when using chainsaws to clear away felled trees. Suddenly released trunks and branches can kill.

The "noname" storm ten years ago left Cape Cod in a lot worse shape then what people in my family have been reporting. My grandmother's house was completly surrounded by the tidal surge in that storm; this one didn't even flood the ground level room.

Some flooding on my parent's property, not as much as some "normal" moon tides have given. None of the three households in my immediate family on the Cape reported power outages...
so it looks like Cape cod got off pretty easy.

I was thinking idly earlier that the storms seem to afflict areas not approved of by the Biblically attached folk. And then I wondered why the people who live in areas likely to suffer from "Acts of God" tend to be more liberal than the lot mid continent. 'Cos those storms and quakes have been around much longer than the politics. Sort of reverse of no atheists in the trenches. Odd.

All is well here. The storm came through and power failed about 9:30 last night during a hot game of Mah Jong. The whole neighborhood got very quiet. Somehow, when we looked outside, it was still light out. Finally we realized that the moon was diffusing light through the crowds and giving us significant light.

Long Beach Island was my summer stomping grounds as a teenager... And even younger... Though I only spent two entire summers there we were there every summer for ever...

Back then it was undeveloped between Surf City to Barngat lighthouse... Not much up there on the north part of the island... A marina and a lighthouse and 15 miles of nuthingness...

South of Surf City was different... Ship Bottom was hot... Beach Haven was hot... Everything in between was somewhat developed...

Long Beach Island is a national treasure and I hope that the Army Corps of Engineers can figure out how to save it...

Despite dire predictions, mostly what we had here in Pittsburgh was a lot of rain. The Loyalhanna and the Youghiogheny both flooded, but the big rivers behaved themselves.

We were warned of 60mph winds today, Tuesday. All we got was rain. My Tuesday lady's husband (I clean houses)was on his way to work. He'd been told not to come in. Then he was told to come in. I expect he was relieved. His wife likes to talk, and talk and talk and talk. Well, you get the idea. Now I'm wondering what I can do for people who weren't as lucky as we were here in western PA.

My husband works with engineers, and we often joke about them - their ordinariness, their dull conversation, their lack of imagination. Yet my husband also pointed out that in 85 mph winds, no skyscrapers collapsed, and except for the crane at 57th street, none of the many towers, tanks and other structures atop tall buildings endangered anyone. No bridges came down, either. You've got to give the engineers and contractors credit for doing things right.

Two other thoughts - it many not be as romantic, but build your house on high ground, not on the shore.

And trees may be beautiful, but they have to be watched. Let them get big, old and weak, and they can kill you.

The two strongest trees are the oak and the crabapple.

Well here at work in North Jersey I have power and heat and we are open as an electronics charging, wi-fi accessible free hot coffee and HEAT location.

Essex county was hit pretty hard and 80 of my town was out and is very slowly coming back on line.   Luckily several business districts were spared so there are places for people to go. We are estimated to get back electric November 5th. School has been closed for the rest of the week because tree clean up is so severe. I will get some photos tomorrow, but tonight we are offering a story teller, crafts, candy and heat in lue of the postponed Trick or Treating.

My house did fine, but the garage got kissed by a big ol tree from the neighbors yard.

Power restored about 4:20 PM (Wed), here -- we were without power for two days and 20 minutes.

Other than the annoyance of being without electricity, we got off fairly lightly with the storm. Mostly small branches in the driveway, though one pretty good sized one in the turnaround -- but I was still able to drag it out of the way. The OTHER annoyance is the almost dead branch of the oak that overhangs the driveway up by the road (where we park the car during a snowstorm) is still there. I keep hoping it will come down sometime when the car ISN'T parked in the general vicinity. It may be at the head of the driveway, but it's actually on our down-the-hill neighbors' land.

Yesterday alternated between rain and sun. Last night we had a thunderstorm, though, and from the news this morning, New Hampshire had some microbursts during that storm, but WEVO didn't say where.

Saw Jeri at McDonald's this morning when I was picking up coffee and breakfast for Tom and me. Cancelled our "avoid the trick or treaters" dinner tonight since we didn't know how long the power would be out so we'd have to go out for pizza or something. I was definitely getting cranky this morning even though I should be used to losing power for extended periods by now.

I've been looking for information regarding those within the storm's path who are dealing with snow as well as cold and power outages. Here's one report excerpt:

"ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) — Wet snow and high winds spinning off the edge of superstorm Sandy spread blizzard conditions over parts of West Virginia and neighboring Appalachian states Tuesday, shutting one interstate as trucks and cars bogged down and knocking out power to many.

The National Weather Service said a foot and more of snow was reported in lower elevations of West Virginia, where most towns and roads are. High elevations in the mountains were getting more than two feet and a blizzard warning for more than a dozen counties was in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

Just reviewed the pics of Seaside Heights, NJ... Sickening... Seaside Heights had one of the greatest amusement parks on the east coast... The roller coaster was amazing... It went out over the ocean and you'd feel like you were about to by catapulted a mile out into the Atlantic and then in split second it would snatch you back with a violently hard right turn pulling down some serious G's... I mean, I've never ridden anything like it... It's now just twisted scrap metal... So very sad...

Mike Kennedy finally made it back to Western New York from Maine, rail from Boston, by 1 AM this morning. He had to spend an extra 4 days in Maine but that was alright; we got more recording done and some editing of tracks.

My mother in Hackettstown, NJ (northwest NJ) was without power in her apartment in a multilevel retirement community for a couple of days. They had a generator for the main building where the more intensive healthcare facilities are, as well as the dining room. They served free meals for the two days, and folks kind of had a good time gathering to play cards, music, etc.

Since they got their power back, lots of friends and relatives have been coming from harder hit areas to do laundry and take showers.

My brother is in a group home 20 minutes from her, and they were without power for over a week. After 4 days, they moved to the head counselor's house until the power was back.

My Dad cleverly passed away on the Sunday night before the storm really hit, and the mortuary service was able to pick up his body that night before the power went out!

I know there are some 'Catters who would be interested in this article in the NY Times today: [South Street] Seaport Museum Works to Dry Out. Some key passages:

Last January the museum reopened after being closed for almost a year for the expansion and updating of its galleries. The number of visitors has reached 100,000 since January.

But the clock is running. A $2 million grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation gave City Museum up to 18 months to see if it could make a go of the seaport museum. Counting a six-month extension, that interim period expires in April.

The storm would seem like a good excuse as any for the City Museum to wash its hands of the project, whose financial challenges include a decade of back rent and utilities payments owed to the city's Economic Development Corporation and the cost of maintaining a fleet of 11 antique vessels.

The ships, it turned out, did surprisingly well in the storm, officials said, as the museum prepared by lengthening mooring lines so that the vessels could rise and fall with the surge.

Still, the damage elsewhere is substantial. Ms. Jones said she couldn't yet estimate the total cost, except to say that replacing the electrical system will run in the millions of dollars. The system, which includes the museum's escalator, elevators, heating and air conditioning, must not only be replaced but also be relocated to a higher floor to avoid damage in another flood.

My relatives in northern NJ got power back 2 days ago. They were equipped with a generator and so were able to cook & keep food etc. Still they are VERY glad to be done with the frequent drives toward PA each day to get fuel for it.

I am sorry about your dad, Becky. I am glad that your mother and brother are okay.

The South Street Seaport is a place I have never been but would like to visit someday. I hope they can survive through these tough economic times.
