Hi Friends
I have taken this chance to hopefully post to those on mudcat, as I'm not on facebook to announce that I will be singing for the last time at Maidenhead on 14th March 2013. Nothing will change with the bookings for the club, all enquires to me please.
Also as an advance warning our song competition will be on held on 28th March 2013.

I think this is an announcement from Mrs Admiral Pearl, as indicated in the thread title, because Tony is on Facebook - and has created the Maidenhead Folk Club Facebook Group - and because it's Pearl who arranges club bookings!

It's sad news, anyway - hope you can be persuaded to change your mind, Pearl....

Please don't give up singing Pearl. You are a true and honest singer and we need as many of those as we can find. Unless there is some irrevocable reason why you must stop, such as illness perhaps, do reconsider. Maidenhead, and the rest of us need you. ROY.

I was at Maidenhead on thursday andPearl was singing clearly and well in the choruses.Dick Miles

Thank you all for your lovely comments - I am in tears Roy.

Tony asked me not to post this thread, but it has been a struggle to put any time aside to learn any new songs, and I will always be the first to stand down at the club although the compere's encourage me not to.

It just means I will no longer be under any pressure to sing, but will of course still be joining in with the choruses with gusto.

It has been a policy of mine to get the commitee members at the Club to do either a booking or feature, it is now my time so the 14th March will be my booking. Go out with a bang as it were.

I just can't imagine the singarounds at The White Horse Festival without you Pearl. You were at your most confident ever this year. Your humour and ability to communicate with an audience is second to none.
If the problem is that you need to learn some new songs, or that you believe others think that, why not learn one new song a year. It can be quite good fun, even though it seems to take ages.
You must have done this in the past, so why not again. In the meantime, keep cuddling!!

Thank you Hesk - just to reassure you that I will always be in the singarounds at The White Horse Festival - I wouldn't miss it.

When I resigned from The Comittee at Uxbridge , I hadnt learnt a new song for a couple of months and had hardly been 'Out' singing for a similar time .
In the first two weeks of 'freedom' I learnt two new songs and visited three new clubs !!

May happen the same way for you when the pressure is off .

Pearl, go back to your early songs, ones that you may have not been singing for a few years, those always come back quicker, and if you have not sung for a few years, they are in effect new songs.

The Good Soldier sends good advice. A few years ago when feeling 'dried up' regarding new songs I deliberatly looked at old set lists, books, listened to old records,anything that would remind me of things I sang long before. To my surprise some of those songs came up fresh as a daisy, as good as new. I found things in them that I hadn't before. This was because I had gained experience and was a much better singer, with more understanding of lyrics that I had 'long before'. Nowadays I don't worry how old a song is, I'll sing what I want to, and in consequence I find genuinely new songs coming in as well as the re-treads. Just enjoy singing Pearl. You can do it. ROY.

Roy is right Pearl .... singing must be an enjoyable experience and I know for you it is just that. More importantly - your singing gives other people a lot of enjoyment - well it always has for me.

There are a number of reasons why you may not be enjoying singing at this particular moment and the prime reason tends to be for most people (of a certain age) is that they can't remember the words.

I am a great believer in using a crib or song book to overcome this - it helps enormously with the confidence and allows me to enjoy singing the songs I enjoy singing, without worrying that I am going to make a total fool of myself.

Also the experience of writing a song onto a crib sheet or note book tends to clarify the words - making them easier to remember. Don't worry if others are scornful of the practise - just remember they're day will come.( if they live that long)

I would personally like to thank those who have gone before with their encouragement. Your words have helped so much.

Tonight I will show Tony the thread I have posted, it has been a difficult week for all sorts of reasons, and somehow those people who knew about the post and spoke to me last night, were not in Tony's earshot.

I had an offer to help out with the 14th March last night, and it was my intention to say it would be Pearl O'Neill with friends amazing that anyone would want to!!

Kitty - I think you know where I am in a nutshell but it was ever thus, Dick & my lovely Roy - I take note of what you say, and I will take heart and see if that helps - although I think I'm still singing them 'old songs'.

Hazel - you are quite right - but because I wanted to 'update' I have sung with the words for a while. However I now have a wonderful wealth of material thanks to you and I think you will be in the middle of the 14th March.

Mary - always an inspiration to me, and far too long since you have both been at the club!!

Finally and no names will ever be mentioned, I believe I no longer sing in those high keys, and the comments have not been behind the decision.

the above, Nutty.
performing[imo] is partly about learning to ad lib,I also think that it is rare for performers to perform as well with a crib sheet,as without it, trained actors can sometimes do it, but most people do not., only my opinion nothing worth falling out about.
