it goes further back than Reagan... but the current so-called Republican is a far cry from the party of Lincoln & Teddy Roosevelt. At one time the South was solidly Democratic... which started to change even before Kennedy was elected. It was Truman who integrated the military... as opposed to segregated "colored" units headed by white officers.

The "Dixiecrats" seem to have morphed into Republican/Conservatives partly as a reaction to national civil rights issues and an earlier realization that it would take a joint Conservative & Republican candidate to win against a Democrat. So the Republicans courted the Conservatives and lost their previous identity... another example of needing to be careful what you ask for.

Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie lived through a time when it was NOT unheard of for a company to murder union organizers or see black men lynched by white mobs. We are not that far away from those times to say, "oh that can't happen now"... BS!!! we have doctors gunned down by so-called right to lifers in only the past few years.

By pandering to the "Christian Right"... who are not very Christ like in their actions and very wrong in their insistence of shoving their krap down the throats of others... Romney is selling America down the toilet, because he only sees the short term financial gain for his 1 percenters - the only ones who really count in his book.

if that disaster strikes this country, we are headed one more step into what I consider to be an American Fascist State... Rush Limbaugh sounds so much like the Nazi propagandists it's scary... it wasn't just the "Juden" that were maligned.... anyone who disagreed with Hilter and his cronies or were considered to be competition were subjected to slander, etc.

And character assassination lead to actual assassination.

Substitute the "pure Ayran" race for "pure Americans" - whatever the hell that may be... certainly not black, hispanic or asiatic, not to mention Native Americans... and back to state religion - there was a damn good reason for separation of church & state back in 1789.

it is an unfortunate fact that American practiced genocide against Native Americans - even the Cherokees who had adopted many western practices, but couldn't change the color of their skin. I've had to listen to people complain about Puerto Ricans not learning English before "coming to this country".... duh, they are fricking US citizens at birth ... but we'll have to wait & see if one dares run for President with a Puerto Rican birth certificate. Guess we should give back the Statue of Liberty to France, we won't deserve it anymore.

Here's the deal, McG... The Supreme Court was following public sentiment with Roe v Wade... We've just completely forgotten why it was we had those sentiments back then... Reality??? Surely legalisation of abortion in the States was just a matter of how the Supreme Court decided to rule on a case that with a different bunch of judges might have gone the other way. With the possibiity that a different bunch of Supreme Court judges might make a decision on aniother case sometime that effectively reverses the decision.

No matter where in Europe you go you will find more intellectual life than in most of the US these day, sadly. European kids may be gaining weight due to overconsumption of TV and McDonalds hamburgers but most adults still think for themselves. Polls conducted here show that, asked to choose between Obama and Romney, about 75% go for Obama. No contest. I decamped for Europe a couple of years after Nixon's election and every time I think about returning to the US, another Republican is "elected" president, and I am happy to stay where I am.

Is there provision (in the Constitution or law) to deal with this type of situation, and can the final tabulation be held off for a week or two?

Amos,as a European, I am frightened, very frightened that Mitt Romney is even being taken seriously as a candidate. I agree with every word Frank Hamilton wrote above. It is quite terrifying that a country, which is supposedly the world's most powerful "democracy", could give any credence to candidates like Ronald Reagan or George Bush Junior. Mitt, like so many other 1%'ers feel that he is entitled to his wealth and has an authoritarian vision for the country, very Feudal, feeling that because someone is rich, they have the right to decide for others what is right. This is an Ayn Randian vision of the world and has been the modus operandi for many millionaires and billionaires that subscribe to Social Darwinism, (not something Darwin would have accepted). Mitt's contempt for the poor and a disingenuous attitude masking a fear and distaste for them will set this country back a hundred years or more. Social programs that actually help people like "Obamacare" or single-payer will be destroyed. Education will be privatized so that only the wealthy can receive it. Mitt's ties to Wall Street and crooked hedge fund managers will become more obvious and as he flaunts his wealth, he will create such a negative response as we haven't seen since Coolidge, Hoover and McKinley if not more of a one. The US will be engaged in three or more wars with Mitt's iron hand that acts in place of his humanity or brain.

Be careful what you wish for, Henry. Unless you are wealthy, it will affect you too.
