We were down on the Jersey Shore today, just off Barnegat Bay to help a friend whose home had been hit by Sandy. On his street the damage ranged from wet floors and wires in the crawlspace [his home] to a totally burned down house and all levels of damage in between. His home has a tall foundation so it was one of the least damaged places in the area. Others were flooded several feet high.

The public works guys were there dumpstering trashed furniture and parts of houses that were irreparable. As we watched they took down part of the burned house to make the site less hazardous.

Our friend had a shed in the side yard which was damaged so we spent the day tearing it down and carrying it out to the curb. Removed a lot of timber that had floated in on the storm surge. A neighbor is staying in his house as they have nowhere else to stay. Cooking is by bottled gas and barbecue. Water seems to be OK. Electricity needs to be checked out fully before it can be used again.

The latest report from Staten Island, one of the worst hit places in the Sandy Storm, is that they have received sufficient shirts, pants, skirts, and such, but are now requesting:

      "PLEASE SEND US SOME SKIVIES!!!!"

(The mayor actually called them "undergarments.")

I've looked through my supply, but I guess for elders like me we'd need a waiver on "railroad tracks," but for any of our friends for whom the plea is applicable other arrangements might be made.

We're supposed to be hit by a nor'easter Wednesday into Thursday. The coasts are already compromised, as are many trees that didn't fall during Sandy.

This may prove to be a major setback, not only for power restoration but for those poor souls whose homes were in the flooded zones.

(Up here on Morningside Heights, south of Columbia University in Manhattan, it's as if nothing ever happened. Bizarre!)

Well, we got home after working for the Democratic campaign today and much to our surprise, the power was back on. We are warm and dry in Basking Ridge. Last night, we came home with no power so we set up the hideabed and lit the fireplace and just snuggled up. I guess our virtue was rewarded.

Folks in the mountains of WV are still digging out of the snow. Many in the mountains still without power, but that is to be expected and hopefully, from long experience, many of them have wood stoves or gas space heaters not dependent on electricity. Water is probably a bigger issue as wells depend on power to pump.

Hunterdon county NJ.
I drove down last week from my home in Potter Co. Pa.to help my 92 year old Mom.
Power's been off since Mon. 3pm.not restored yet.
We've got heat lights & water via generator.
We shut it down during daylight hours to conserve fuel.

Phone/internet's been sporadic.
Alot of downed wires & trees in the area.
Lines for gas have been long but we've managed ok.

JCP&L's been working their butts off to get folks up & running again.
My hats off to them.

Heading back home Tues./Wed.

We're in Basking Ridge, NJ. Currently residing in Fort Lee, NJ. We are heading out shortly to help with the Get out the Vote effort in our home area and will either stay at home with our fireplace or will stay in a local shelter tonight.
We are scheduled to be at an environmental expo on Tue, Wed and Thur in Somerset this week. The following week may be interesting, though, as we are scheduled to be at the NJ League of Municipalities in Atlantic City from Monday through Thursday.

Don't forget to vote. Christie has just announced on line voting for those who are unable to access their usual polling places.

Wonderful news, indeed!

We were 5 days without power in our December Ice storm here in Maine a few years ago. With temperatures sinking below 50 F we were ready to vacate. Our cats were most puzzled. They both took to snuggling under the blankets with us at night, even though they barely tolerate one another. Some of the folks in the rural parts of town were out of power for 10 days or more.

YEAH !!! from Northern New Jersey !!!!

In an amazing surprise our power was restored early this morning!!!

I am waiting on the furnace repair guy, but we were able to get the furnace started so for the time being we are warm and connected to the world once again.

It is not clear if our polling place will be restored by Monday, but we have been assured that Federal trucks will appear with paper ballots at all locations without power on Tuesday.

We are still hosting about a dozen folks at church whose power is still out. Folks whose individual house wires are down and folks whose downed trees are going to be tricky to clear in tight corners around multiple houses have been told they will be waiting longer.

But we are so blessed. Thanks for the offers, we were beginning to debate heading to my folks, but luckily we are settled and can start cleaning up the yard

I have a friend in RI who has been without power for 4 days and may still have no power, but the temps have not dropped that low.

Day four of no power and the town tree crews and the electric companies are having a hard time coordinating to get wires turned off so that roads can be safely cleared.

The lines for gas are over 5 blocks long and I confess to a bit of envy when I drive by neighbors whose power is restored. 50% of the town is still out, but it is a strange patchwork quilt at night of lights and dark patches.

They electric company website estimates we will have power a week from today! The temps are predicted to go down to 29 F tomorrow night. BRRRRRR

North Central PA had high winds and quite a bit of rain....no real damage where I am...a few tree limbs are down but that's about it. We were lucky and did not lose power. Shelves at the grocery store were empty in terms of water, frozen pizza and precooked canned food like ravioli, stew, tuna, spam, etc.

It was just a windy day for me (north of Boston). I didn't lose power or Internet access. I worried about my best buddy in Rutherford, NJ, but he also was in a lucky area. The news from the coastal parts of New York City, Long Island, & NJ is horrible.

Got power back today at 4:20 PM -- out of computer juice (and lights, etc.) for two days and twenty minutes.

We had a few branches down in the driveway that I could drive over to get out to McDonald's for coffee and breakfast and a bigger branch in the turnaround that I hauled out of the way on Tuesday.

Not really up there as far as storms go, around here, at least.

We were well prepared (including mentally) but I was getting cranky without electricity anyway by this morning.

Amos, I hope you are right about your family being on the phone contacting others. They are not very close to the coast, but they are closer than I am. (I used to drive through Wood River Junction taking my son to and from Boy Scout Camp Yawgoog.) If they did lose power, it might be a while before it could be restored because it has a small population, no nearby hospital, and not many businesses so it might not be designated as a priority area. At the peak, 116,000 homes/businesses in RI were without power. This has already been reduced by more than half, but we've been told that some people may not get power until Friday.

Mystic Seaport reopened today from 1-4 PM and with free admission and the advice that some things would be closed, including food service, until power was restored to all buildings, as Maeve indicated. It will be open from 10-4 (normal hours at this time of year) starting tomorrow, Nov. 1. They posted photos of the aftermath on Facebook. Report from just up the road from BillD, in Germantown MD. Other than a free day off from work, nothing doing up here. However, brother in NY lost power, not likely to have it back for 5 days or more. He works in NYC. And given the transportation horror there, he may not get back to work for a week or two. So sad for so many.

Everything AOK in Salem County New Jersey (Southwest corner). Some basement water and power out for 18 hours - now back on.
Worried about the shore areas though. Sandy took out a lot of the dunes which are a barrier between the communities and the ocean, just in time for the Noreaster season which starts about now.
Wonder what a Noreaster would to the shore communities without the sand barriers which normally protect them.

Only downside is that it will be a while before grandma gets to play her favorite slot machines at the Atlantic City casinos though.

Most of our fun was trying to get home to NJ from New Orleans - American Folklore Society convention on Sunday. They changed our flight destination three times and we went to Harrisburg where Dick's son picked us up. He drove us home Monday mid day, but my car is still at Newark Airport. Last night the wind howled, but the house stayed together. There was only a two minute blackout. We are fine. Glad we do not live on the shore.

Moira did not do here house concert here tonight and will not get to Boston for the other one, but will go to the Eisteddfod Friday.

I'm fine here in West Warwick, my son's family lost power for about 24 hours in Middletown, his mother-in-law in Newport lost power for about the same amount of time. (Newport and Middletown, as well as Portsmouth, are on the same island in Narragansett Bay. Most of the flooding and higher winds were along the southern coast. Where in RI are your cousins? In Pittsford, VT, storm was substantially less powerful than we anticipated. Gusty wind and a lot of rain, but mostly just twigs and loose items on porches, etc., blown around. We never lost power. Our neighbor has one tree down, but it's an old swamp popple several hundred feet from anything that might have been damaged.

I'm fine. I checked in with my family in NY. All survived the night. My niece and nephew in NYC never lost power. But my family on LI didn't fare so well. Two brothers have downed trees on their homes. My other niece, who was sheltering her in-laws, got a huge tree through the roof and it took out the chimney. The inlaws in the meantime have lost everything - their street was flooded and their home is under water in Freeport.
Another sad bit - I grew up on 98th street in Howard Beach, the old section. Two blocks up a woman drowned trying to get to her attic. Unreal to think of that street under water. This is a tiny neighborhood of single family homes. Very sad.
BUT - all mine survived the night unharmed. Great Aunt Mary read the little ones (now teenagers) the riot act re: investigating odd things on the street.

Finger Lakes were hurt much more I think by our late spring snowstorm about 6 months ago; There is a tree down across a house a block or so from my house, but no visible storm damage on our property.

We're fine here in Central Massachusetts. No power outages and the wind gusts didn't even begin to approach the speeds that were predicted. Our thoughts though are with all the folks in NY, NJ, CT and in other places where the flooding and winds were pretty treacherous.

My power went out about 2:15 yesterday, and is still out. I called Bat Goddess shortly after I lost it (power) and they were all settled in.

I'm at McD's, recharging my batteries and sucking down coffee. I see clouds with patches of blue sky and the odd seagull. (I know, they're ALL odd.)

I've got crap all over my yard, although my neighbor does too, and I think it may be MY crap.

They're saying it might take a week in some places to get the power on. Hopefully it's not the case where I live.

All is quiet in Upstate NY.

Storm passed last night, wasn't as bad as I thought, but of course we are quite a distance from the coast. Looks like another beautiful fall morning here.

The Mudcomputers are now located deep underground, in a man-made tunnel in a secret location in the hills somewhere are State College, PA. They have their own nuclear power source (courtesy of a folkie high the Navy hierarchy) and buried fiber-optic lines connect to a variety of nodes. A satellite in geosynchronous orbit over The Cafe (as it's called) can also accept and beam down Mudcat.

This underground bunker contains living quarters for six, with water and other necessities for six years stored behind blast-proof doors. A slight overpressure is maintained to prevent the influx of chemicals, radiation or biological agents. The entire thing is mounted on giant springs to absorb the effect of both earthquake or a nuclear bombing.

Just to say we're OK in Maryland (takoma Park) and the worst of the storm is over for us I think. Other areas seemed to have suffered worse so I think we're staying put for the time being but hoping to get to the eisteddfod on friday

How did this happen? I was expected the website to become overwhelmed by the storm, picked up by the storm surge and redeposited in bitts and pieces along the Jersey shore, with planks from the old Atlantic City Boardwalk.

From over the pond - I for one, and I'm sure all UK Mudcatters, send their best wishes for you, your families and friends safety.
let's hope it passes quickly and you can all get back to some sort of normal life specially before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If you are in the area affected by the hurricane, maybe it would be a good idea to leave a short post to reasure everyone you are OK.
