I buy the HD gray and white socks at Mark's Work Warehouse. Medium and large (winter) sizes. I place a plastic water bottle in one of the large ones and tie it to my belt after I dunk it in water (stream, lake) when I am fishing and the water stays cool. Better than a canteen.

I like thick, padded Thor-Lo athletic socks. They are kind to my battered feet. I neither notice nor care about other people's socks, so I am unaware of faux pas that might be associated with socks.

My husband wears beautiful, striped socks at every opportunity. He is particularly fond of some black socks with coloured toes, heels and soles -- the most electric ones are striped purple and yellow. He wears them with his military uniform -- very transgressive.

I buy generic white cotton tube socks in packages of (I think) 10 pairs from Target. They are ridiculously cheap. I think I own 1 or 2 pairs of black socks but I only wear them for weddings and funerals. The rest of the time I wear the white ones. I don't own any other kind of sock, so unmatched socks are not a problem. All the white ones match each other.

I used to know a guy (Bloody Good Jazz Sax Player) who ONLY wore odd sockds - If he accidentally pulled a matching pair out , he always put one back !

G-Force: I used to wear sandals until I discovered Crocs. Now I wear socks with Crocs. I don't care either.

Crocs, by the way, are lightweight, airy, comfortable, spongy, amazingly durable and cheap. Actually, my first pair were not official Crocs but a copycat brand called Rics, which were even cheaper, but I can't find them anymore. :(

Ihave two colors of slacks - tan and black. I have the same two colors of shoes and socks. I buy socks at Walmart which are 70% cotton and also are black or tan. Dressing the lower half of me is simple - tan (or black) slacks, socks, shoes.

Once I read a mystery story set in a ballroom dance studio. There I learned that female dancers in competitions try to buy shoes which match their skin, so that their legs seem longer. I checked it out on YouTube - it's true.

My tan or black scheme is an extension of their idea.

I discovered that Dockers now has socks with no toe seam! I have about 8 pair (beige). Four are extra cushion soles and four are standard. I wear them most of the time in the shop. I do have dark socks for some black 'sandal-like' things and the very rare occasions when I need to semi-dress up.

I have dozens of older socks from 'way back when', and have a wonderful use for certain ones. Take one thin sock..(preferably a long one- with no holes) and insert it in one long, thicker, soft sock. Spread the double opening and pour in a bunch of plain, cheap white rice. Tie a knot in the tops. This goes in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, and becomes a VERY handy bed warmer, neck warmer.... whatever. (The double layer ensures no leaks and more cushion)
Yes, you can buy these commercially ... sometimes with beans instead of rice, but this is fast, cheap and gives extras. Save the fancy ones for company. ;>)

I love my Crocs too, but they aren't that durable, but they ARE, expensive.

Do some socks "annoy" you? (Why would they?)

(Finally, I do wear one pressure stocking-left leg. When possible I try to cover it with a loose fitting coloured sock to match the other foot, but if I can't, I have no qualms about mismatched colours)

For generations, my family have been expert at making holes in socks at the toes: somehow it only seems to take a few days. Also, of not throwing them out when they get to that state.

I've (relatively) recently acquired about 15 pairs which are all black except for the toes and heels, which are one colour, but it might be purple, or red, or green, or blue or various other choices.

Almost every time I have to go through airport security I have to remove my shoes and display different coloured socks with large holes in them ...

NEVER wear dark coloured socks or underwear. Well, if you just HAVE to, stay with the dark socks. Dark underwear (anything other than white) is a health hazard.

There was a well-known bar in Pensacola called "Trader John's". Trader John (the man, not the bar) always wore mismatched socks. In fact, he had a standing offer of a $10,000 reward to anyone who ever caught him wearing socks that matched. He died a few years back with nobody ever claiming the reward. As far as I know, he was buried wearing mismatched socks.

Hard to find good socks. I'm trying out Rocky socks. Wool.$5 a pair.
I may go to Carhart socks if I'm unhappy. $10 a pair. I hate thin socks. I want padding between my foot and boots. And they need to be warm in winter.

   Medium weight wool with nylon to improve wear, dark navy blue ankle socks. I buy 'em about 3 pairs at a time, depending on bargains available when I'm in the mood (and place) to buy, maybe annually. I dislike cottons, 100% synthetics, and socks with toes. As I no longer dance I don't need white knee-socks any more. Old ski socks fill my boot-sock needs, doubt if I'll ever need to buy any more.

How old are your socks?
   No real idea, my buying method means I have some I imagine may be about 20 years old, but I couldn't prove it. Mostly rather less. Some of the ski-socks will be even older.

Do you save the one-sock-not-lost (if so, for how long)?
   Never have more than one odd sock. Either another vanishes (or wears out) or the missing one sneaks back, having realised the error of its ways. This may take a month or a year, I don't care, as long as there are enough socks in the drawer they can please themselves.

Do you have an alternate use for a lone sock?
   Key/coin bag when indulging in watery activities.

   Wool yes, rest no.

   Any kind of 'sock-based fashion statement' is well on its way to raising my ire. I view them as almost entirely a functional garment. (Almost, because I have fond memories of a spell in the 70's when some very good female legs were enhanced by thigh-high brightly coloured socks. Unfortunately not all were as good, but you can't have an omelette without breaking eggs)

   I repeatedly wear unmatched (by knit) socks, but if I can hardly tell them apart when holding them by a window I doubt that any one catching a glimpse of them in situ is any the wiser. I don't wear socks with sandals.

   Annoyed, no. I merely lament the fate of a species that so lacks my exquisite good taste. (Ah, come on, everyone needs somebody to despise.)

90% of my socks are black - old marching band rule that I still live by. Our uniform pants and shoes were black and with black socks your legs all blended in and the judges had a difficult time telling if you missed steps...much like the dancers mentioned above.

The rest of my socks are brown for when I wear, well, brown.

I hate white socks, nylon (slippery)socks and wool anything. In fact, my favorite time of year is April through November, when I wear no socks at all!

I make my meager living by coercing people into buying my pottery at art fairs and festivals. I use old socks as reusable packing material for mugs and the like. Pottery needs to be wrapped in something so it won't be broken during transport to and from shows. A whole sock covers a tall narrow piece like a goblet, and a sock cut into two pieces covers two coffee mugs. Popping a sock over a pot is quicker than wrapping it in newspaper or bubble wrap, and socks can be used over and over.

I still have a pair of grey socks that were issued to me at the Canadian Forces Recruit School in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, in November 1974. They are 80 percent wool with 10 percent nylon for strength and 10 percent barbed wire to prepare us to face the Commie hordes when they came thundering through the Fulda Gap.

Each sock has a cute little name tag sewn in the top cuff and an even cuter darn in the toe. I keep them to remind me how wonderful it is to be a civilian, first class, who is entitled to wear the socks of her choice.

Hasn't been much at the Cornwallis military base that isn't civilian since 1994 when it closed. There is the small "Pearson Peacekeeping Centre" which is a small non-profit organization, a conference centre and a customwer call centre. Many of the base houses and residences were sold off at a fairly low price - some are used as retirement and summer homes.

wool socks make a half decent water filter also. If you have a mud puddle in the woods and you are lost and need water, dig a hole next to the puddle, the water will filter up from the bottom of the hole (IE muddy water but filtered by dirt) you can stuff the sock with muddy water and wring out a drink or two ...

not advisable but will safe your life, that is if you are ever stuck in such a situation ..

Now, you can and this is true make a "prison match" with wool socks. This is how it works, you pick off fibers of the wool, scrunch them up into a loose ball, hit it with any spark and you got fire. Wool socks can be used for all kinds of stuff.

In a tear gas attack, wet a pair of wool socks, adhoc gas mask ...

We use worn out cotton socks for rags for dusting, wiping up the gasoline that dripped when we measured how much was left in the snow blower tank, etc.
