Nah - don't think so. If it starts moving too far in that direction I think there'd be a grass roots reaction against it - a folk equivalent of punk vs prog in the 70s.

PS Nowt wrong with Jim Reeves!

I expect it will become a bit like teaching - an all degree profession. Those of us who are unqualified will have to stick to singing Jim Reeves greatest hits on karaoke machines.

Good luck to the students - especially those who will pay higher fees in future.

Looking at the course modules I'm struck by the apparent absence of any specific study of music from Great Britain. There are modules on jazz, Indian, Yiddish Black and Irish music, but no mention of England Scotland or Wales.

Pity this is so far away, as it's always stimulating to hear young people perform.

Dear all,

For those of you that still consider Folk to be alive and kicking! We're making a lot of great music up here in the North East and we've got a gig with our current second year's on the 16th November at The Sage Gateshead.

The Folk degree at Newcastle University have an upcoming concert at The Sage Gateshead on the 16th November under the 'Future Traditions' banner. This will be a gig by our second year students led by Shona Mooney and Desi Wilkinson. Tickets available here: http://thesagegateshead.org/event/future-traditions-16-11-12/

Additionally, I'd like to let you all know that we're accepting applications for 2013-14 entry up until the 15th January 2013. There's a lot more information on applying available here: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/w340/courseoverview/#.UI_CMLQk_dk
Applications can be made through the UCAS site here: http://www.ucas.com/students/apply/ but if you'd like to have a chat about applying or any aspect of the degree then don't hesitate to get in touch with Dr Simon McKerrell, the Degree Programme Director at simon.mckerrell@ncl.ac.uk or by phone 0191 222 5609.
