You know, one year Cathy and I and our friends the Atchisons and the Momiches took second place in the outhouse race. I still have a silver painted toilet seat somewhere in the house. The following year we took first place in the outhouse decoration and team costume competition. We did a Hawaiian theme "The Hula Hole." There's a picture in some book about Stone County with Cathy in the driver's seat and a moo-moo. That year, however, we almost took out a spectator in the race and were disqualified. dave

Besides the Outhouse race, very great fun!, and Bean Cookout/Eatout - many jokes, there was lots of variety including a Highland Piper :0) I will post some pics tomorrow.

Cajun, excellent Box player, old timey including Billy Mathews - one of the best oldtime fiddlers in the Ozarks, Henry The Fiddler - amazing fiddle wizard [e-mail] Idahoe/Colorado Muddies probably know Henry, several local fiddlers all excellent, Bob and Deborah Davis - Celtic / Bluegrass, DeeAnne Gilespie the Fiddle Goddess(has a web site) - these are just some of the musicians I managed to jam with. Several Bluegrass groups including David Branscombe - very good, my favorite Bluegrass Singer in the South. David plays Guitar and his wife plays Bass. David is also excellent on Banjo and (rare thes days!)plays Clawhammer style as well!

There were so many visiors at the Bean Fest that parking was a big problem. Eventualy found a space three blocks from the Town Square. I was very lucky too.

High points - probably the fun and complaining when the Bag Piper played, the Pib Mor is fairly loud. Hearing some superb Cajun Accordian, Billy Mathews old timey fiddling, The Nelson Family of Arkansas at the Folk Center on Sun evening.

Jamming late Saturday till 3am Sunday morning missed the Gospel show at the Folk Center apologies to Dale, it was nearly impossible to locate people in the large crowd, which was bigger than Winfield!

BTW There is NO CHARGE or ticket required for Pickin on the Sqare at Mtn View. City and State did a great job with services as did the vendors with food etc.

Next big festival is Folk Fest in spring, but there are a few smaller ones before that time.

Sounds just great and one helluva lineup, but honest to gawd, what DOES this place smell like after 24 hours. I done been to the Carolina Ramp fests, so I got me some kinda idee here.

J077 and Dale, Thanks for the plugs for Bean Fest. This is our last big weekend and a great time to visit Mountain View. Town has about 2500 residents and there are probably more music instruments per capita than anywhere else in the country. During Bean Fest, about the only place you won't find music is the Wal-Mart parking lot, but that is not guaranteed. Door's open. Y'all come.

Hey, j0 ~~ I will likely be there somewhere along the line, though time is a bit tight this weekend ~~ high school state volleyball tournament at Conway is competing for my attention. About the only thing certain at the moment is that I will likely be at the Folk Center for the gospel show on Sunday night.

17th annual event set this weekend

The 17th Annual Bean Fest and Great Arkansas Championship Outhouse Race takes place this weekend in Mountain View. While events sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce are set for Saturday, the festive atmosphere will span the entire weekend, as craft vendors and musicians fill the town. Impromptu music sessions take place all around the courtsquare downtown, and craft vendors line Main Street.

Official events start at 10a.m. Saturday with organized music in front of the courthouse. Groups will appear as follows:
10:00 - Granny's Kitchen Band
10:30 - Hook Line and Sinker (that's Moon Mullins, Brickshy Jones, and Don Mellon)
11:00 - J.C. Bonds & Band
11:30 - Robin Branscum & Band
12:00 - Cash's White River Hoedown Band
12:30 - Foothill and Rhythm Cloggers
1:15 - Ann Marie Frantz
1:30 - Mountain View Folklore Society

Free beans and cornbread will be served at noon from kettles on the west side of the courtsquare.
The outhouse race begins at 2 p.m. following the judging of the Most Original Outhouse and Best Costumes. Awards for all events will be presented following the races.
