Thanks.   I'll just have to keep trawling through the old book stores.
My version of Songs of the Hebrides is a stand alone one, it has no mention of being volume anything. I also noted that there is nothing attributed to Marion Macleod of Eigg.   Just a couple of tunes from a Janet Macleod of Eigg.

Janice, from memory the song is titled 'For People Who Have Gardens' and it's in Vol 3. of Songs of the Hebrides.

Elizabeth, I can email you a .pdf of the score if you are still interested.

Regards, John

and to think I just sat and wrote out the words from the recording on Smuggler. - I should have looked for a suitable site first.

It so happens that I have a copy of the 1901 edition of Songs of the Hebrides by Marjorie Kennedy-Fraser so I got it off the shelf thinking I could scan the music for the person who wanted it.   Shame, I can't find it in the book.   Perhaps the tune goes by another name. JMDreisbach

Does anyone know where one can obtain sheet music for this song? It was one of my favorites when I sang it during singing lessons as a child.

I've very recently posred a NoteWorthy file to Joe Offer of the tune plus original piano accompaniment. It'll turn up at Mudcat MIDIs in due course.^^

Just for the record it appears in Volume 3 of Songs of the Hebrides. It was my intention some time ago to attempt to notate all of the songs in each of the three volumes, but alas I'll leave that task to someone else.

Regards, John

It's strange the way I keep missing threads although I always make sure to go back to exactly where I left off the night before! Sheila, if you're still around: My copy of McCalmans Folk is dated 1971, I think, so it was reissued fairly soon after the first issue. I haven't heard of any later reissues, certainly not on CD.

Incidentally, some kind thoughts for Derek Moffat might be in order - according to the latest McCalmans newsletter he is seriously ill and won't be touring with them for a while. Nick Keir writes:
"Meanwhile we're sure you'll join us in wishing Derek and his family all the best. We'll be happy to pass on any messages to Derek, but please don't try to contact him directly, as he needs peace and rest. Thanks for your understanding."

I have just responded to a query from Joe without reading this thread. To cut the story short I've been chasing the score for ages, but was looking in the completely wrong direction. All the info is listed above as to source. If nobody else does it, I'll post the tune in about a week's time.

Regards, John

I've just come across the score and found this thread in the process of posting a potential new thread. Max's wizardry is amazing!

Has Murray or anyone else posted the tune yet? If not I will. You would never pick from the lyrics alone what a great song this is, but then again The McCalmans do a great job on hundreds of songs. I hope that everyone is aware of their 30th Anniversary Album - The McCalmans in Harmony.

Regards, John

Their first album was "All In One Mind", taken from one of the songs on the album (The Pace-Egging Song) "Here's one, two, three jolly lads, all in one mind...." Susanne - do you know who reissued it, and if it's available on CD? I bought mine in Edinburgh, when it first came out - I'd like to replace it.

Murray, you are invaluable! Thanks for the info on authors. I know Ian McCalman gets a lot of his stuff from old collections - Smuggler, where he only found one verse and wrote the rest, and The Highland Road where he added the chorus and tune, are other examples - so it is quite likely he found it where you did. Now that I know I can actually hear him saying the full title in the recordidng of a live broadcast that I have.

BTW, John, Smuggler and Burn the Witch are by no means the McCalmans' first recordings. The first one was All In One (1968), reissued as McCalmans Folk, and there were others, almost every year. Derek (whose surname is Moffat, not Moggart, incidentally) put the number at 23 the other day.

They're working on their website, but I can't remember whether it contains a full discography yet, and I'm not sure they're aiming at putting all their lyrics up there. So far, it's mostly stuff from their latest album, Keepers, which can also be found in their new songbook. - Susanne

A corrective to John W's words:

One that's gay with daffodils,
One where children play,
One white with cherry flow'r,
Another red with may.

beginning of next verse is

A kitten and a lilac bush.

As to authorship etc., the "real" title is "To People Who Have Gardens", air from Marion Macleod of Eigg, arranged for voice and piano by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser--among her Songs of the Hebrides collection.I have the sheet music from Boosey & Co., copyright 1921. The words are by the novelist and historian Agnes Mure MacKenzie of Stornoway

I mentioned this on the other McCalmans thread.
The first two McCalmans LPs ``Smuggler(1975)´´and``Burn the Witch(1978)´´are rereleased on CD,in the series ``Two albums on one CD´´from Transatlantic.
Released by Castle Communications 1997 (ESM CD 521).
Cover note says that ``Gardens´´,is TRAD. Arr.McCalman,Moggart,Bayne.

Great guys the McCalmans.I got to play on stage with them at the summer festival in Skagen Denmark.

Greetings John.

A thank you, John, from me. I still had a couple of gaps in my transcription attempt. Has it been written by the McCalmans (I have only a tape with no notes from that record)?

Subject: Lyr Add: GARDENS (from the McCalmans)^^
From: John Wood
Date: 28 Oct 99 - 11:39 AM

Here you go Herma!

GARDENS----THE McCalmans.

CH:For days work and weeks work
As I go up and down
There are many gardens
All about the town.
(Repeat)

One that's gay with daffodils
One where children play
One that's ripe with cherry flowers
Another it with may.

Chorus x2

A kitten and a liliac
Bridal white and tall
And later crimson ramblers
Against a granite wall.

Chorus x2

I have passed your railings
When you never knew
And people who have gardens
I give my thanks to you.

Chorus x3.^^

Hope this helps.
Greetings John.
