It IS an awful shame that Moira and Grove are clashing again in 2013, as they're 2 of my favourite festivals. Hopefully they will be able to stop clashing in future years!

But we will definitely be going to Moira in 2013!

MudGather anyone?

Really like both Grove WHFF and Moira and hate not being able to do both.

I've therefore decided that I will alternate year by year. Therefore, as I was at Moira in 2012, I will be at White Horse Fest. in 2013.

please keep my name on the Stewarding list though.

I agree that it is a shame about the clash with White Horse Folk Festival. One of the organisers from White Horse came to the early Moira Furnace Folk Festivals when Moira was on the third August weekend and White Horse on the 4th. Moira have remained with the 3rd weekend but now, it would appear that White Horse have moved to the 3rd weekend as well!

Perhaps avoiding a clash with Shrewsbury was a factor.

I'm afraid clashing is the bane of an organisers life. A major factor for the smaller festivals is catering for the hard core followers. WHFF and Moira are a classic case, many who go to either really want to go to both. Dave E's answer of alternating is one solution. But this means that the fun chat about what happened last year, is meaningless; who talks about the year before last?

Early planning and chat between organisers, including the big boys, is surely the only way this can be sorted. The idea of hanging on to a specific weekend might have to be relaxed, you just tell us when it's on, we'll be there.
Is this not part of the idea behind AFO (the Association of Festival Organisers for those across the pond)?

P.S. We will be at Moira, sorry again Dave.

re dates
August 2010 and 2011 they were a week apart (I was at both) because the way they follow the weekends in that month.

2012, 13, 14, there is effectively one less weekend and they get pushed together. Grove moves between the second and third weekend depending on this as it seems to be based on what day the month starts while Moira seems to be based on being the weekend before the Bank holiday
next one without a clash is 2015
i love both festivals

when it works out i can do Sidmouth Dartmoor Grove Moira and Towersey all in one month 8-)

Not sure how you have worked this out cllr but there are in fact 5 weekends in August in 2014!

The date of the festival is also not related to the Bank Holiday.

Irrespective of the number of weekends in August, the festival committee has decided that Moira Furnace Folk Festival will be held on the third weekend in August so the 2014 festival will be on 115th, 16th and 17th August.

Moira in 2009 was the fourth weekend in August as the fifth weekend was a bank holiday weekend monday being the 31st

there are indeed five weekends in august in 2014 but the last weekend is not the bank holiday the 31 is the sunday the point being

all the moira festivals so far are the week before the bank holiday (so far) and all the whitehorse festivals are the following week after Sidmouth finishes

Sidmouth dates are always from the first Monday in August which is why sometimes the start of Sidmouth festival friday is in July and other times the first friday is in August

Moira 2010 was technically the third weekend but effectively the fourth as the first of august was a Sunday (depends if you say a weekend is just the saturday or if it has to include the Sunday as well)

in 2011 the first Monday from when Sidmouth runs was 1 August which meant

that White horse ran on the second and Moira was on the third weekend

2012 clashed so will 2013 and 2014 as i previously said

unless one festival changes its date, the next year where they won't clash will be 2015

moira has so far always been the weekend before the bank holiday
whitehorse/grove is always the weekend that follows a week after the final friday of Sidmouth.

if its irrespective of when it falls, i hope the committee stick to the current pattern in 2015
as Whitehorse/grove will be 14 15 16 August and Moira will be 21 22 23 so i can do both again- which is exactly the same as the 2009 dates

warmest regards cllr

I've generally found that WHFF starts a week after Sidmouth finishes, so clashes with the start of Whitby when there are 4 Mondays in the month but not when there are 5 Mondays in August. Moira always seems to have started the same weekend as the start of Whitby.

As I have already stated a decision has been made by the Moira Furnace Folk Festival committee to hold future festivals on the third weekend of August.

When the Bank Holiday is does not have any relevance to the decision.

2014 will be 15th, 16th and 17th August.

2015 will be 21st,22nd and 23rd

2016 will be on 19th, 20th and 21st

2017 will be on 18th, 19th and 20th

I'm getting a bit old for camping but would love to go to this festival. It appears that the end of the Ashby Canal (and its incredibly smelly toilet facilities) is about 5 miles away by road (and probably something similar walking).

Does anyone have any comments on how realistic it would be to get a taxi from the festival site to some nearby canal mooring (accessible by road)?

Lots of interesting workshops planned for singers and musicians and the Storytelling at the new Storyteller's chair sounds fascinating. There will also be a Skiffle Session on Sunday morning that everyone can join in with. If you can shake it, bang it, pluck it, blow it or sing it, bring it along and let off some steam.
